Not to
mention the aforementioned part of the arguement about how she clearly
knows what she's doing in terms of blood magic and dealing with
Audacity.

There is unfortunately a difference between
knowing, and thinking you know. I doubt she'd consider herself
susceptible to Wryme either.

i still don't think treating her like a child by keeping the potentially dangerous thing out of her reach is an appropriate answer.

I can't say I really liked the way denying the arulin'holm was handled (I mean, for one, wouldn't keeping it just cause her to use blood magic more?), but still. I'd keep it. My Hawke's don't want her to come to harm. Resentful Merrill is preferable to dead Merrill, who doesn't even deny just how dangerous her quest is. Come act three, she's openly anticipating that it'll cost her life.

Yeah, that is the one exception. I see that IC as unique circumstances due to the whole being in Feynriel's weird sleeper-Fade-head-thing, and OOC as the writers trying to clumsily establish how much of a BAMF Hawke is, because all his companions are shown to be corruptible, but Hawke isn't, CAUSE HAWKE IS THAT AWESOME. In my opinion, that encounter doesn't really prove anything. Not saying anyone else is wrong, but that's just how I view it. It just didn't ring true.
And plus, giving her the Arulin'Holm is right on just a basic fairness level to me-she did what Marethari told her to do, and Marethari completely wussed out and didn't uphold her side of the deal. Merrill made the deal, but Marethari gave it to Hawke, specifically hoping that Hawke would have to do her dirty work in outright denying Merrill the thing.

I'd love it if one quest (after rivalling Merrill) involved Hawke needing Merrill's help with another dangerous runaround, and she ends up saying no and giving a lecture about how she cares about Hawke, but just wants to protect Hawke from him/herself. Judging by how much mortal danger Hawke gets into on a regular basis, this would be a pretty good argument to make...

That would be pretty cool - I always like little inversions to the usual dynamic between the PC and party members in Bioware games.

I understand your reasoning, my philosophical position remains the same however, resentful Merrill is preferable to dead Merrill sure, but that notion that it's your right right to protect Merrill from herself is what irks me terribly

granted, I am biased in cases like these, it is SUPREMELY maddening having someone make decisions for you because they think they know what is best for you, its arrogant and selfish in my view, Merrill is grown woman, capable of making her own decisions, she is aware of the risks (not all of them, but who is ever aware of all the possible effects of their actions?) and is WILLING to accept those risks, it seems disrespectful to me as well.

Try as I might, every fiber of my being screams at me that its wrong to deny her the knife, especially for the selfish reason of "I don't want to lose her".

I like how in LotSB and DA2 how the companions now are starting to show more than a little concern for the PC. I'm tired of asking everyone else how they are doin'/holdin' up and NO ONE asking the PC how they feel. Thats why I especially appreciate Merrill's consoling moments in private.

Merrill had me at "dorf felas".

And Esbatty, I totally agree about Merrill trying to help Hawke after the various family crises. She is a totally awesome friend.

Merrill is the most likeable companion DA2 followed easilly by Varric. I love Dr Who broutefoin :) and I totally agree with Esbatty about npc's being concerned for and looking after the PC... I am also sick of playing games where the PC feels more like a nanny for their dysfunctional companions.

Merrill had me at the very moment I saw her walking down the hill.

Question: In the Merrill, friend or foe quest, if I'm romancing her and I tell her to keep studying elven history, does that mess up the romance? Do I have to reply with "Whatever happens next, I'll be with you"?

No, you don't have to select it. It's a special option that's only available in a romance, but it's not required to continue said romance.

thank you. Now on future Merrillmance playthroughs I'll pick that sometimes, just to encourage her that what she was doing was rightPosted Image.

Oh who am I kidding, all of my playthroughs are Merrillmance ones.

It means "slow" and "gray" in the Elven. But the way she says it... *puddle*

Schmooples didn't make it, a casualty of the battle of the squealing plains and the real reason that Leliana (aka secret agent Nightingale) comes to Kirkwall, to look for long lost Schmooples.

its arrogant and selfish

That seems a little unecessary.

The rest, sure. I get it, I do. I'm just wired differently. If I see someone I care about doing something stupidly dangerous, I'm going to try and talk them out of it. I don't want to see them hurt. Thinking I know better than them doesn't come into it.

It's not as if Merrill's waving away Hawke's concerns and re-assuring her how completely safe the whole thing is. She speaks of the danger with alarming frequency.

(For the record, I only keep the arulin'holm because the game requires me to. If I could keep the rivalmance without holding on to it, I would. I'm sure as hell not going to max out my rivalry beforehand via more traditional means)

Actually, that's the real reason behind Leliana's attitude change towards the mages.

Schmooples didn't make it and a mage did it.
