Other than sharing a few similarities in character, they are not the same. They just fall under the same nerd girl archetype that BioWare loves to regurgitate for every game.

That is what I mean... I should of pointed out the specifics earlier. Also I've only played ME and DA series, so I couldn't tell you much about BW doing that. But I see what you mean.

There is one crucial difference, of course.

Female characters can sex up Merrill.

Oh, Tali. You horrible tease, you. WHY WON'T YOU LOVE ME.

Because the Mass Effect devs are terrified of angering the COD bro gamers who themselves are even more terrified of homosexual content?

Not anymore, apparently. Happy times, depending on who they decide to make available.

Fingers crossed.

Because she loves my M!Shep, she doesn't have enough love to spread to FemShep. :P

Whilst this is true, Garrus is great and his romance scene is somehow both funny and intimate, it's just. I mean. Tali.

I got better, Shepard. I got you

I see Merrill and Tali both fitting the geek stereotype of being intelligent, fixated with what might be considered a highly technical... stuffs. I'm surprised that more people don't compare Merrill to Liara though as she's far more socially awkward, fascinated in the uncovering the past, was a loner prior to meeting the PC, and biotics are the settings spellcasters.

How geeky Merrill is depends on how technical you see magic as being. Is spell casting a discipline like computer programming or is it like singing? Is making the eluvian like engineering a bridge or like painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel?

Admittedly, art/science is a false dichotomy but it's a culturally significant one.

The difference (for me) is that Liara is obnoxious and Tali is cute. I don't think the similarity goes much deeper than they're both cute characters, but my superficial reaction to them is the same, because superficially, they're both adorable.

My first thought about Merrill was that she's basically Tali the Elf, but like ish said it wasn't much deeper than the two just being cute characters.

Also, Liara annoyed the crap out of me in ME1. I loved the new her in ME2; similar to Garrus, it felt like she'd learned from and was actually following the example set by Shepard (<--- largely Renegade player). Merrill does the exact opposite of annoy me, hence why I've never connected the two of them in my mind,

I'd rather Merrill didn't similiarly warp into an indifferent, cold-hearted badass who keeps a piece of Hawke's armour in her home as a momento.

I mean, I'm sure that worked if Shepard romanced Liara. If not, it's a little creepy. Like discovering a shrine to you in a sock drawer.

Liara's confident and self-assured, and has a bit of an independent streak. Merrill doesn't have that independent streak -- she's more comfortable in a group or having the support of a group...

Liara's also a bit more standoffish, reserved, and introverted. Merrill's none of these...

Though Merrill is totally willing to work on her own for as long as necessary if that's required. The rest, I agree with.

In ME2, maybe.  In ME1, she's confident about her area of expertise - so is Merrill, probably overly so - but as far as interacting with people, and particularly the main character, not at all.

Both Merrill and ME1 Liara say they are unused to talking to humans, put their foot in their mouths, get embarrassed about it and miss the PC's jokes.

Merrill reminded me more of Liara as well, and though I really liked liara (except for her appeareance in ME 2 before LotSB) I definately prefer Merrill of the two of them, but then again the character is as if made for me Posted Image

Though she definately has characteristics she shares with both of Liara & Tali she is very much her own person... character

Then I can look at Merrill through TWO sets of rose-tinted glasses! Posted Image
