In ME2, maybe.  In ME1, she's confident about her area of expertise - so is Merrill, probably overly so - but as far as interacting with people, and particularly the main character, not at all. 

That's what I mean. Liara in ME1 and 2 was never really a "people person", and Merrill strikes me as the opposite. But in ME1, she's still confident to a degree -- she goes all meldy with Shepard without too much doubt or vacillation to get the Cipher, and it pays off, as one example...

I am so so happy that my F!Hawke can romance Merrill =) it's such a sweet romance and the first one I did in the game. I didn't plan it, it just sort of happened. If she hadn't been available it would have been Tali all over again. My F!Shep is pining for her but I don't know if it ever will happen. I can always hope. Yay for lovable Merrill, next time I'll rivalmance her =)

The ones you don't plan on are always the best. I'd planned ahead with Ashley in ME1, and wasn't planning on romancing anybody for ME2, but Tali came out of nowhere. Didn't even realize she was an option until I talked to Chambers, then thought about doing it on another character (I was thinking my Engineer, since they could tech geek together)...then came the loyalty mission and that damned scene with the hug, and after that the dashing Commander line. Point, set, match. 

It was much less of a heavy risk with DA2 and Merrill, though. No need to worry about Morrigan (who I likewise just sort of happened into a romance with - still my favorite of them all) coming to kick Hawke's ass like I now have to fear with Ash and Shep.

Hey, she does call Shepard a traitor and storms off without even hearing him/her out, moments after he/she saves her from a horrible, horrible death for the third time. Any ass-kickery deserves to be two directional.

Well, perhaps i said that wrong.

I'm sure alot of games with that theme are great, Mass Effect, Starkcraft and whatever.
I don't dislike the games more the genre.
I just dislike playing games that takes place in the big wide universe, i dunno why, just a strange thing i have

Funny, while I see a lot of similarities between Merrill and Tali in the whole "Cute, sweet, and awkwardly funny" vein, I still think Merrill has more in common with Liara. Or maybe its that Merrill is more a Liara/Tali mix.

In ME1&2 Tali isn't as dependent on Shepard as Merrill is with Hawke. To some degree all companions rely on Shepard but Tali always carried herself with more confidence. She knows she's the best engineer around, she knows she's lethal with a shotgun (more importantly Grunt and Garrus both know she's deadly with a shotgun), and she wants to help Shepard fight the geth (eventually Saren and the reapers).

Merrill's story arc comes off a bit more like Liara, confident in her abilities but really she'd just rather be working/researching on her one goal (Liara - Protheans, Merrill - the Eluvian) which makes them outsiders to their own people. They both have mother issues, and while it's possible to do Noveria without Liara, both can potentially face off against their mothers (or mother like figure in Merrill's case), both of whom are controlled by another evil force. Friendmance with Merrill is also similar to Liara in that they both see their hero as a big force and they are simply drawn in. (Rivalmance has a more unique flavor to it.)

I'm sure I can draw up more similarities between all three, but beyond the cute factor I think Merrill is more like Liara than Tali. I just happened to find Merrill nowhere near as annoying as Liara! (Annoying award goes to Anders).

Full Disclosure: I honestly believe the love story between Shepard and Tali is one of the best written in video game history. I also believe that besides Shepard, Tali is the most important companion, regardless of love interest or not. Without her data, ME1 goes no where, unlike every other character who is expendable (Kaidan and Ashley were both bla, Garrus and Wrex, while awesome, are optional, and Liara was just kinda annoying and did nothing more than the green Asari on Feros could have done). In ME2 she becomes important to Shepard, either as trusted friend or love interest, and later as a peace maker between Quarian and Geth (should you pursue those options in game).

In the endbattle with a Hawke that didn't romance Merrill. She is so sweet when she starts stammering. What do you think it is that she would like to say but doesn't quite get out. I'm dreaming a little for a proclamation of love but I think that Sebastian might dislike it =)

Of all the companions I tend to recruit Merrill ASAP but to see if I can get any more different Sundermount Ritual reactions and dialogues with Merrill, I picked up Anders, Isabela, and Fenris first. That will be my party when I hit up the Dalish later this morning. I know Fenris says cool stuff during the ritual so hopefully Anders has something to chime in too. ALso I want to see them mistreat Merrill from the beginning since I really really neglect Anders and Fenris in every other playthrough due to their abuse of my favoritest Elf ever.

Also, the African jumping spider prefers mosquitoes with human blood in them as opposed to the blood of other animals. It's sense of smell is so good, it can tell what mammal the mosquito has recently fed from.
