An Ode to Merrill

I thought I would conclude my discussion on Dragon Age 2 on a lighter note. It's popular to point out the flaws of the game in review form, or talk about how RPGs like DA 2 simply have less under the hood. But I wanted to take a moment to talk about one of the most memorable elements of any good RPG: an excellent character.

I've played a ton of RPGs, but I always come back to a few characters that are very special to me and stand out in my mind. There's Vivi from Final Fantasy IX; Frog from Chrono Trigger; Celes from FF VI; Garrus from Mass Effect; and many more. But I may have found my favorite character in an RPG to date in Merrill; Dragon Age 2's Dalish elf.

I'll just say that I don't know if I like Merrill as much as I like Leliana from DA:O, but it is close.

Not just her voice, her voice acting was superb in the game.  One of the few voice actors that did grief and happiness very very well.

All the threads have slowed down except the Anders thread. Interest in DAII is waning. I expect things to pick up after for a while after the DLC is released.

No, nothing yet, but it better be coming.

There is a bit of DLC coming with 3 unique maps and at the very least Griffon statues, not much to go on but the 3 unique maps look promising.

Here's a question for you guys:

What staff do you guys equip Merrill with toward the end of the game?

I give her the Keeper's Staff as I feel it makes the most sense for her to have it. If not that staff, I give her The Final Thought. Hawke has Malcolm's Honor, and Anders has the Staff Of Violation.

Think she ended up with [Torch of Falon'Din] or something like that. It spit fire. I prefer electricity or poison staves for her.

As she has the elemental weapon spell, I find myself frequently switching her stave out anyway.

I think I gave her Voracity (with the "evolving" item property).

Since I always make her a Primal mage the Corrupted Acolyte's staff, for blood magic boost and lighting damage boost, usually ends up being my choice.

I give her Allure's Crook partly because it is a spirit staff which is my favourite type, but mostly because I think it is the most elegant staff in the game and I think its look suits her, sometimes she gets the Staff of Violation at the end.

If I'm not playing a mage, Merrill gets Voracity the moment I recieve it because it tends to be the best staff I can find without guides. If I'm playing a mage, Merrill is saddled with whatever randomly-generated staff I can find until something good pops up.

Edit: Thought she did get the "honor" of wielding Malcolm's Honor when I was trying out the weapons from the itempack DLC...

The first time through I splashed out on Cold Blooded for her, which may or may not have been a good idea given that she didn't have any frost spells at the time. It looked great with her romance outfit, though.
