On another note, friendmancing Merrill this time is making me somewhat uncomfortable due to the obviousness of how much she worships the ground Hawke stands on. It feels like I'm taking advantage

Well, are you man or a woman? Your character, I mean, not YOU :P

As a Lady Hawke, it's less worshipfulness and more admiration. And, hey, the way my character felt about her was much more pathetic. So, it really wasn't so unequal a relationship. It all depends on how you RP your character.

But in the words of an elderly Ben Savage, "They WANT you to take the rolls!"

You're not taking advantage of her. You listen to her, you ask her opinion and for help in important situations. You respect her views and support her in her endeavours. You treat her as an equal not as an "apprentice" or an "outsider" but as a person. So yeah, you treat her very different from what the rest of the world treats her.

So yeah she kinda crushes on you like a Mabari latches onto a dying man's throat.

That was something of a metaphor.

While there are a few times when I prefer the rivalmance (like where she comes to apologise after throwing Hawke out) on the whole I prefer the friendmance as I think it feels more respectful of her and her views... and then I happen to agree with her standpoints on both the eluvian and bloodmagic.

She can tear out my windpipe any day ;)

...

(I realize I say and type "yeah" alot.)

The rivalmance makes me feel like a unbridled monster who just sh*ts all over her little parade.

I haven't willingly played a male rpg character since... I don't know. Knights of the Old Republic? I have serious vagina envy.

It's the idolism that nags at me. The whole 'I wish I was like you, because you're perfect'. I suppose the rivalmance has a touch of that as well, but it felt less... desperate, as thought she wouldn't just do whatever Hawke told her to. It reminds me of Jack in ME2 a little, actually: her life's in the gutter, and she ends up clinging to the one person who treats her like a human being. Understandable, but a little awkward.

Perhaps it'd help if Isabela hadn't come up to the mansion two nights before and suggested girly fun times, mind you <_<

I don't mind the rivalmance on the whole, except for denying her the arulin'holm. The way it's handled is just too... disciplinary. Like telling a child to time out in the corner because it broke a vase. Acting like Fenris was not how I intended the rivalmance to play out, or how it did in general. You're not having it because you can't be trusted with it.

How is the friendmance doing what Hawke tells here?   I thought the whole point was letting Merrill do what she wants.

This.

It was very different but then I only experienced it when I refused her the Aruin'holm (sp?) in Act II, so much of Act I was a friendship so I wasn't a complete Monster... just a suddenly unbridled one.

I equival it to hardening Alistair outside Goldanna's house. "Yeah, screw evereyone else. Its time for you to man up, but just you remember you're still my b*tch."

You can't really justify keeping the arulin'holm...it's theft...plus stabbing Merrill in the back.

Ah, no need to apologize...we all form our own opinions/impressions.

I personally think the rivalmance is evil/horrid/terrible/sucky/bad things but...that's just how I see it.

No I distinctly remember putting about 300 hundred arrows into the Varterral whilst simulatenously chanting "ItsNotASpider" repeatedly and then Marethari personally handing the carving knife to me. She says so specifically "I'm giving this to you Hawke." So the Keeper, who is a Leader of the Dalish people and thus completely aware of the rules governing their customs and tradition, hands me a filthy filthy thief and killer of a Shemlen their sacred whittlin' knife.

Its not theft if I earned it and was specifically given it. I am merely the arbiter of its ownership. Essentially I am an escrow with a conscience.

Not really...it rightfully belongs to Merrill...she called the rite...she accomplished the goal (even though she had others aid her).  The tool belongs to any member of the clan that calls the rite and does the task (regardless if they had help)..the tool belongs to Merrill under Dalish custom...when did Hawke become a member of that Dalish clan?

The Keeper defied her word and Dalish custom....

Technically, Marethari gives it to Hawke, not to Merrill. Whether you pass it on afterwards is up to his/her discretion. But yes, I didn't like withholding it for various reasons, hence the friendmance this time around.

My previous justification was that, at first, Hawke trusted Merrill to know what she was doing. Heck, she's no mage, she's just someone who enjoys the finer points in life: stabbing people, petty theft and the odd tumble. If Merrill says she knows what she's doing, she knows what she's doing. More than Hawke does. Not a big fan of the blood magic, but hey.

It's a viewpoint that unravels somewhat during act two. Night Terrors in particular. She didn't blame Merrill for turning on her, but it did make her worry whether Merrill actually knew what she's doing as much as she claimed she did. Keeping it was more of a snap decision than anything else, really.

Marethari gave it to Hawke, yes...but it was rightfully Merrill's. No one can deny that.

Which makes her rebel like Edward James Olmos in Stand and Deliver. You don't mess the Olmos... or Marethari.

As long as you are satisfied it's all good.  Maybe...I don't know you that well enough to determine if you deserve any satisfaction.

But yes its such a terrible thing to hold back the knife after 1) she askes you, damn near begs you, to go with her to ask for it, 2) you kill the ITSNOTASPIDER Varterral and a whole host of corpses and actual spiders, and 3) Marethari violates the rules and hands you the knife after they both explained, before the monster slaying, that the rules said the knife it totally a Dalish FUBU accessory.

So I'm not saying its cool not to give her the knife but dammit if my a-hole Hawke didn't already 1) try to talk her out of it, 2) forget that this is the woman he sleeps with every night in his fancy mansion, and 3) went through a whole host of spiders and giant monster to get it and afterwards get the fate of the knife put into his trust.

LMAO, because he doesn't want her dealing with demons anymore considering her jumping ship at the first Pride Demon that promised her 30 pieces of Arthlan silver.
