I do play a Diplomatic Hawke (with a mix of humor where appropriate) as my canon and favorite Hawke (plus I think the romance lines with Merrill are the best that way) mainly for these reasons.

I guess they could improve by either eliminating the default personality based responses (giving full choice) or being more cautious with when they use them.

I'm okay with some of the default choices in sections that are not very meaningful. For example I loved the way sarcastic Hawke gets all excited about the fight between Isabela and Aveline in the estate (at the end of act 2), whereas aggresive Hawke is more like "ENOUGH!". In situations like that one (or the reponses Hawke gives when you click on her), having your tone determine the response is fine by me.

But a love declaration is serious business. I definitely want a choice there.

I also don't want my Hawke cracking jokes about the murder of her mother. They could've at least not had the 'let's just say his killing days are over' line delivered in such a jarringly glib way, especially given how marvelously the other purple responses in that quest are delivered.

But anyway.

Yes, this!

That's kind of what I was trying to get at...in some cases it's okay and even a funny surprise...but in others that are more emotional/meaningful (Merrill "I love you" declarations), more control over what is said would be ideal.

Like this:

...is another good example of where it's bad.

Gaider mentioned the thought about allowing a sort of "Preview" when highlighting over a conversation option. Granted he said he'd have to talk to the tech guys to see if it's even possible. It would seem like something easier to add to the PC version than the consoles to me. But it would help to appease some of the issues players have about what options to choose. In the end it's a damned if you do and damned if you don't. They can't record enough options to appease every one. There always seems to be some issue players have when their character in vocalized in an rpg. Be it even if the players just are not happy with the voice actor that was used for example.

I played both a male Hawke and a female Hawke. On the second play through I was going to have the female Hawke romance somebody else (or not at all), but ended up romancing Merill all over again. Choosing not to romance Merill is like kicking kittens. Either that or it's the "I'm huggable!" aura she projects.

It's something about those Green Eyes. I force myself to do the Rival path because it's much better story wise but it is hard to say no to her. I do love the scene where she calls you a just another shemlan if you don't give her the tool. Rival Merrill = awesomeness.

I love that scene too.

I much prefer the rival romance truth be told, gives the romance a bit more intensity.
They love each other, but there is just something that causes friction.

No need for a toolset for this game. The most important mod has already been made.

You people. Your thinly veiled attempts to cover up Merrill's giraffe neck make her cry at nights, you know.

I can see Anders approve that. The Awakening Anders, at least.

The scarf is a good thing. I mean, our Hawkes have bedposts on their bed for a reason.

Shame on you Esbatty. Under thinking the multi-functionality of a good scarf, and you call yourself a pervert.

No video posted for the Friendly Concern dialogue about Merrill yet? I don't feel like playing through DA2 again right now.

I, for one, am not a big fan of the neck. But I am a huge fan of the scarf. So it all works out for me.
