To me, the friendship path is all about trust. You trust in Merrill that she knows what she's doing (given her superior knowledge of the subject) and she trusts you and this results in her confiding to you her doubts regarding the mirror and leaving her people.

IMO, friendship Merrill exposes all of her vulnerabilities to the player just as you have to be a bit vulnerable to her and take a risk in return....which is something I really like.

I hate the rival path and that's totally my opinion and stuff XD

But I didn't trust the Mirror, and wanted her to get rid of it. That's the rival path.

Why do you not trust a mirror?

Agreed on the trust part, that's how I view the friend path. Everyone says the rival path is the one someone who really cares for her would take, but I say bollocks. I can care for her and trust her to be strong enough to take care of herself. And what do you know, she goes seven years without any incidents regarding the mirror.

That being said, I certainly don't hate the rival path. It has its moments too. But the friend path is indeed my favorite.

I'd admittedly like the friendmance a lot more if the actual romance scene dialogue made a little more sense to me. I had a hard time seeing parts of it as a coherent conversation, rather than a series of seemingly unconnected statements. Not the whole thing obviously, and it's more a problem of my own creation, but it still bugs me sufficiently.

What is the problem, exactly?

I dunno, I think both paths have their merits, and I don't personally prefer either one of them over the other. In my two completed games I romanced Merrill both times and did each path once, and I think it really comes down to how you're playing Hawke's character.

Honestly? It's a tiny, silly reason, and not particularly unique to just this one scene. The "It's foolish of me to even dream that you might" line doesn't seem to have anything to do with what she says just before, and doesn't so much put me off it entirely as cause a "huh?" moment. It takes me out of the scene, so to speak.

Like I said, my fault. I seem to remember the "maybe, but I deserve you, did you think of that?" line bugging me in a smiliar way too, but it's been a while. I forget how it all goes. Plus that's a conversation choice anyway, and a particularly irksome one at that.

Pretty much. They're both just different takes on the same thing. I'm not sure how spending nearly a decade being supportive and trusting is inherently some indication that Hawke doesn't care.

Really?  Hmm...I've always liked that line myself.  I think it fits with her awkard attempts at finally admitting to Hawke that she cares for her..

I personally view the friend path with Merrill not necessarily as an issue of trust, but instead, of respect. Do you respect Merrill's autonomy to make decisions about her own life, even if you disagree with those decisions, or do you dismiss her autonomy because you want to protect her.

Obviously, how your particular Hawke feels about blood magic and the Eluvian is a major factor in their relationship.  If your character is more neutral about blood magic, then he or she will probably be more inclined to let Merrill live her life the way she wants to, and simply be there to support her if she falls.  However, if your Hawke is very anti-blood magic, then I see the rivalry as a friend trying to stop another friend from what they believe is destructive behavior.

I see the Friendship romance as not only supporting her in her endeavours, but also something that helps her realize that her obsession with the mirror has gone too far. Because if she's kidnapped, she says that the most important thing to her is Hawke. So, by supporting her and romancing her, I see it as Hawke helping her to change her stance from "I will see this through no matter what" to "I'll spend a lot of time working on this, but I won't let it rule my life."

To me, friendship romance is about supporting her and making her realize that she doesn't need to be obsessed with the mirror to work on it. She just needs to make it a project. Also, all of my Hawkes see nothing wrong with blood magic, as it isn't inherently evil. Another reason why I support her is that Hawke knows nothing about the Eluvian while Merrill has studied various sources and by Act 3 has come close to making the Eluvian work. The only person who knows more about the Eluvian than Merrill is Morrigan, and possibly Flemeth.

my rogue hawke does not see anything evil with blood magic, but sees major dangers with it,  such as killing yourself or others if done wrong or the significantly higher risk of getting possessed by demons, and so uses that knowledge to show merrill that her use of blood magic caused more problems for her and her clan than it did help.

i prefer the rivalmance myself because it shows more reality in it while the friendmance was more of a fairytale romance in my eyes.

Hawke's got a bit of a trollface/awesomeface going on there.

Still, very adorable. Good find, Zjarcal.

Merrill: Fenris?
Fenris: What is it?
Merrill: Would there ever be a chance you could come to trust a Mage?
Fenris: Is this query in regards to a particular Mage or just the power tainted monsters in general?
Merrill: Uhh, in general. Well, minus the whole monster parts.
Fenris: *sigh* When Templars fly.

*years pass*

Merrill: Did you just see Meredith...?
Fenris: *sigh* It doesn't count.
Merrill: Aww. It was rather amazing.
Fenris: You are aware she's attempting to kill Hawke?
Merrill: That... uhh
Fenris: B*tch?
Merrill: Yes, that. Thank you.
Fenris: Don't mention it.

Since this thread is a bit dead, I'll say something dangerous and controversial to wake it up.

um...

I don't really like Merrill's eyebrows.
