So how long of gameplay does Legacy add?

I 've been hearing less to 2 hours, to some1 taking over 4 hours and not seeing an end yet.

At best? 2 1/2-3 hours.

It took me about 3 hours with my rogue dual wield with Fenris, Merrill and Bethany in my party.

On the topic of Merrill now: I'm working on a new playthrough, I intend to be pretty much pro mage (which assures lots of friendship from Merrill of course) but I want to get into a rivalry romance with Merrill. Now I know denying her the special tool in her act 2 personal quest will turn any friendship into rivalry but does this also work when friendship is already at 100? I don't want to have to be mean to Merrill just to get rivalry points.

It doesn't reverse if you're at 100 percent, only before. The easiest way is to get her close, like to 80 or 90, and then do the quest. After thats over, find tarohne's books and destroy them, and that will give you enough rivalry to finish it.

Alright, that's all I needed to know. Thanks for the quick reply:)

I guess I'll have to keep Merrill out of my party during some Act 1 quests in order to avoid getting 100 friendship. I've managed to get her friendship to 100 by the end of Act 1 several times already. Better work to avoid that.

It doesn't if you're capped, no. But you can avoid capping her for friendship without needing to be mean to her relatively easily. All you really need to do is make it to act two without capping it - which is relatively easy, I've never even come close myself, and haven't made any rivalry I can remember besides when initially refusing to help Grace escape - then just destroy one of Tarohne's books with her present until you get to her personal quest. There's also some good opportunity for rivalry during Night Terrors, if you refuse to help Torpor before exhausting his conversation options.

I've generally always just destroyed a couple of books to keep her from capping, but still maintained a high friendship. The rivalry/neutral conversation you get when she first shows you the Eluvian or when you give her the Halla statue are a little unsatisfying.

[edit] Oh, and I'm late. Boo.

Honestly? Unless you're going out of your way for friendship points I think it'd be very difficult to actually cap that for Merrill before getting to Mirror Image in Act 2.

Also, IIRC not giving her the mirror tool will add a lump sum of rivalry points on top of the flip of friendship to rivalry. 50-75 friendship points getting flipped would be more than enough to officially "activate" the rivalry path and get close to locking it in.

I usually switch party members to get them on the right path in Act 1. I found for most party members you can lock their rivalry/friendship at 100 by the end of act 1 or early - mid act 2. I usually take the pro mage route. Between the wayward son and act of mercy quest, if you're friendly and pro mage, Merrill can receive a whopping +50 friendship. And that's just 2 quests mid act 1...

Defending mages during 'enemies among us' nets +20 friendship. Killing the magistrates son and accepting sister pretrice's quest nets +10 each. That brings Merrill at +90 friendship mid to end act 1.

So for Merrill there's no real need to go out of your way for friendship. Support mages and have her in your party seems all that's required.

Picking the anti blood magic option (which turns out as "the minute he resorted to blood magic, he signed his execution warrant") during act of mercy nets a decent 10-15 rivalry, at least. I've never agreed to help murder Thrask so they can escape, so I'm not sure exactly how much you get.

I've never killed thrask either but telling grace you're sorry you had to kill her... boyfriend I suppose and then agreeing on helping the mages (by telling thrask the mages are dead or have varric take care of it) nets +20 friendship.

You can't kill Thrask. Thrask and Grace have plot shields.

Well, I never attempted to kill Thrask. Telling Grace you'll kill him is an option, yet before you get to it you'll probably get ambushed by the templars outside.

Aye, you walk out to Ser Keras (spelling) that just arrives talking to Thrask. This tends to lead to a few options. Some of which can end in a fight. Some are dependent on what you chose when talking to Grace inside the cave as well. The dialogue will also vary depending on if you're a mage. Offering to help as a mage with Varric there as an option can give you an option to pass the hat to Varric. Varric being the smooth talker that he is convinces Keras and his crew that you are a First Enchanter that was sent to catch those unruley mages and solve the Circle's problem pretty much. I <3 Varric.

Varric's stories always come in handy. During the wayward son quest, Varric can also free Feynriel from the slavers in the cave by telling a story how Feynriel is actually the Viscounts son.

See, that never made any sense to me. Not the 'deceiving Ser Frothing Lunatic With Sideburns' part. The 'nothing ever comes of it despite the fact he learns that you tricked him after catching Grace anyway' part. You'd think there'd be some repercussions for that.

OMG... I knew it. I knew my Merrills had more dialogues. I've done one complete playthrough and it was a Post-Game DLC run with Merrills, Aveline, and Warden Bethany. Now to do an Act 1 Merrills, Varric, and Carver run to see how that will turn out. *giddy* I cannot wait to hear all the new banter. Legacy is fun in and of itself with all the new lore and fun combat scenarios (Brontos = srs bidnez), but the companions are my favoritest part of the Dragon Age games.

That was certainly strange. The templar actually says you lied to him but they caught the mages anyway. Most templars would have tried to slap Hawke in irons just for lying to them, let alone helping apostate mages stay away from the templars. :pinched:

Don't forget the Magistrate who gets all angry with you if either you or Fenris kill his son. He basically says to not show your face around here again. Yet you are perfectly safe in High Town and in fact you become all praised by about everyone. In fact the Viscount invites you to chat and everything. At least he could have written a strongly worded letter or something.

p.s., I was all for leaving a strongly written note on Cory's sarcophagus. Not an option apparently. Granted I also think Varric's mention of a Deadly Armada of Demon Pirates attacking a Beach as another awesome must have event.
