I have to wonder how much danger she was actually in, since Marethari doesn't think that Merrill was in danger from merely conversing with Audacity, but from the restored Eluvian. I agree with you that Audacity was likely manipulating Marethari in order to escape the totem.
I'd say Audacity was doing that for sure. Marethari feared the Eluvian greatly even though she knew little about it...and Audacity seemed to play with that fear, telling her that the mirror would be the thing that allowed him to go after Merrill.
There's nothing dangerous with merely conversing with the demon as it's trapped. You could sit there all day and tell it your life story...it isn't going anywhere.

I hate that line. I absolutely detest it. But more than what she's asking Hawke to do, I hate how utterly bloody passive Hawke is about it. Sure, s/he can refuse to help, but where is the argument, the I'm-sorry-could-you-repeat-that-ness? Merrill is all but saying that she doesn't place value in her own life, and Hawke just sort of shrugs and says ok.

Indeed. We've never seen an Eluvian actually link with the Fade; the one in Witch Hunt supposedly goes beyond it, or something. The link is vague at best.jlb524 wrote...

Of course, we don't actually know that the pride demon possessing Marethari is the same pride demon that was in the statue, either...

Yeah and Marethari doesn't know that. She admits she knows nothing about them in DA:O and refuses to study them further. All she knows is that it tainted two clan members.

The demon is missing from the statue though.

True, but one pride demon could have possessed Marethari, forced her to summon it and then disposed of it.The demon is missing from the statue though.
Granted, it's rather a long shot, but it goes to show how little we know about the situation other than that Marethari is an abomination.

Not literally, no. But given the implication of what Merrill is asking Hawke to do - and I mean the 'not placing value in her own existence' part, rather than the 'so this is a bit risky' part - the responses on offer aren't particularly satisfactory.

I don't think this is as self-evidently true as you've posited it here. This debate always goes in circles, but suffice to say Merrill thinks there is a danger, and seems genuinely worried on her way up Sundermount. "Nothing" is such an absolute term, and not one I'm comfortable using about that kind of situation.

And it's so totally out of nowhere, it's not like anyone else has asked someone to kill them when they're in a hopeless situation of any sort, or even considered it

Urgh, I sound so insufferable and whiny. I mean, I'm not expecting every imaginable dialogue option to be realised. It just seemed like Hawke didn't put up anywhere near as much opposition to the idea as s/he really ought to be able to, s'all.

HAWKE: If you do that... who will help me raise little Malcolm Jr.?
MERRILL: What?
HAWKE: I'm pregnant.
MERRILL: But - you're a man. You don't get pregnant.
HAWKE: Oh, suddenly a Shem expert, huh?
MERRILL: I'm being serious here, Hawke.
HAWKE: No, you're the one not being serious here. I can't kill you. I've lost nearly everyone I've ever loved and... and... I'm going with you, knocking you out, then killing the sh*t out of that demon. Because I love you and, other than shamelessly flirting, killing is what I do best.

Why put up a fight, if she become an abomination, you are going to kill her, so why say otherwise? If anything, you should have been telling her not take the risk so you don't have to kill her. Not telling her, your going to let her run amok, because you cant bring yourself to stop her. .bleetman wrote...
...Your point being, what, that a friend/lover explaining that she needs you to tag along whilst she does something mind-warpingly dangerous in case she needs to be euthanized shouldn't elicit more concern than one or two empty protests?
