Beth/Fenris is actually a pretty good pairing. She gets the same exception to his bigotry that Hawke gets (that one Anders banter is "there are strong mages, Bethany for one" if Hawke's not a mage), and she's laid-back enough to let him blow off steam and work through his issues himself the way he needs. She's not nearly as gung-ho pro-mage Anders-cheerleader as Hawke can be and still romance Fenris, and they clearly do like each other when they're not arguing about magic (compare his subdued "you do not want to know" when she asks about his tattoos to his vicious aggression at any of Merrill's overtures of kindness).

Makes as much sense as mage!Hawke/Fenris, certainly.

Anyway on-topic, I actually came in here to ask about the Merrill/Mahariel thing. I know it's popular fanon, but is there actually any canon in the origin to suggest that? I don't remember any hint of intimacy from my male!Mahariel playthrough, but maybe I just picked the wrong dialog options. Or is it that "no one mourns Mahariel like me" line from DA2?

There's nothing in the Origin (I've played as both male and female and it's the same).  The only romance in the Dalish Origin is F!Mahariel/Tamlen (I don't remember if you can flirt with him as a male).

There's no hard evidence in DA2 either...people just choose to ship them and interpret that line as meaning more than friendship.  Most Merrill fan fic I've read featured her once having the hots for Mahariel.

It's been some time since I played DA:O, but when Mahariel leaves the clan with Duncan, Merrill looks more distressed to me than the rest of the clan. I don't really think anything of it, since nothing else suggests anything happened between the two of them. But I did note that.

^ Yeah. Like I said, I noticed it, but I didn't give it any importance. I think people shipping the two hang their hats on that, but it's real flimsy. That said, there's no evidence that there wasn't anything between the two, either.

I thought of it more as a friendship thing... You know, excluding some bearded stranger, three people have entered the ruins, and only two are left. One of them is walking away permanently. Bit of a scarring experience, especially if they were friends.

I'd say they focused on Merrill at that time b/c she was the only squad mate from the origin that was: 1) still alive and 2) mandatory

So...the player would definitely be familiar with her and the scene more meaningful.

Yeah, no Mahariel love for poor optional Fenarel. (Man, he got assertive when he grew up, didn't he? The dynamic outside Audacity's cave is pretty much an exact reversal of when he was trying to join Mahariel on the way to the mirror.)

I will say I do see the appeal of the pairing. I only romance Merrill for SCIENCE in DA2, so It'd be nice to think that despite not getting Hawke, she's still had at least one relationship that I can guarantee was with a good person who cared about her. Plus my Mahariel was a mage, so they'd have trained together. (Of course he was also pretty gay, but details details, right?)

My Mahariel is a mage too (yay for mods!).

In my head canon there were feelings there (as they were together a lot) but nothing happened. I mainly like this 'weak ship' b/c it makes my Hawke squirm with jealousy.

They wanted to see if they could choose not to romance Merrill without errecting a wall of denial and lies. Science has been proven.

But yes, I'm not much of a Merrill-mancer. I can design a Hawke to whom an attraction to Merrill is totally in-character and who is well-suited to her, but it's not a Hawke I'm going to identify with or rush to sit down and play and spend time with, so having seen how it plays out, all subsequent playthroughs have had her as normal nakama while Hawke pursues Izzy or Fenris (or Aveline. Poor, sad, lonely Verity Hawke...).

Aha. For SCIENCE! then. I can respect that. Thus far I've romanced Zevran, Fenris, and Kaidan for SCIENCE! myself. Evidently, my female Wardens/Hawkes/Sheps are SCIENTISTS!

I play straight, Latino (Antivan descent), male characters as well, if character customization is avaliable. I did try out the female Wardens when I checked out the other Orgins, but my canon runs have been with male protagonists.

The don't do it, seriously... I know how you feel. I can't not romance Anders anymore. The heartbreak when you have to turn down your 'canon' is just not worth it. You don't enjoy that character.

Through searching under "All ratings", "Hawke" and "Merrill" on Fanfiction.net, I've found a few that fit (Or nearly fit) that description. Some change parts, and none tell the story word-for-word, that'd just be boring. Seems like the majority are male Hawke/Merrill, and I'm pretty sure none are finished, though a few are ongoing/should be updated eventually.
