Whereas to someone like Sebastian or Genitivi or Leliana, it's a very personal thing, something powerful and miraculous and worth devoting your entire life to. That place in Merrill's life is taken up by Arlathan and the ancient glory of the elves. (Actually I wonder if that's not part of why she and Isabela get along so well; Isabela's got a similar dedication to the sea, and it's something the other companions don't share. Anders and Fenris and Aveline may be just as passionate about their mage freedom/slaver killing/people protecting/whatever, but they don't have that reverence to go along with it.)

I think that's a good point.  It's difficult for most to see why Merrill would care so much about the acient elves and why Isabela would revere the sea.

Whereas, it's easier to see why Anders/Fenris/Aveline would be passionate about their dealios (they are more practical, I suppose...we see that it can suck for mages, that slavery is bad, and that people need protected from thuggery).

I would consider devotion to Arlathan and the ancient glory of the elves as part of the Dalish religion.

Merrill says to Sebastian "When we've proven that we're elves again, that we didn't lose everything, they'll come back to us."

Her attempt to restore the Eluvian is part of this, and her belief that it will be worth all the sacrifices is very much a leap of faith.

Well, their gods are gone and most of their History, rediscovery of them both is pretty much THE Elvhen way.

She says that the stories are just stories. Call her a "lapsed Catholic."

I don't remember that.  When?

When Merrill is talking to Anders about the distinction between spirits and demons:

Anders: Maybe you don't really understand the difference between spirits and demons.

Merrill: Did I ask you?

Anders: Spirits were the first children of the Maker, but He turned his back on them to dote on His mortal creations. The ones who resented this became demons, driven to take everything mortals had and gain back the Maker's favor.

Merrill: Your "Maker" is a story you humans use to explain the world. We have our own stories. I don't need to borrow yours.

I never got the impression that Merrill didn't believe in the elven gods or lapsed in her faith, since she simply seems to be addressing to Anders that she doesn't believe in the Andrastian faith, as well as the Andrastian perspective on spirits and demons (which Anders address as religious, via the Maker's "First Children").

Merrill: (Regarding Qunari) They are so big and grim, I wonder what would happen if I tickled one of them.

They would try to glare her down, but would end up "D'AWWW!"ing. They would then kill themselves for defying the Qun.

That this was not a fourth Arishok-battle option appalls me.

I'd say she believes but doesn't take everything said in her religion at face value, realizing they're just stories.

Arishok: Tell me, Hawke, what would you do in my place?
Hawke: ... Merrill, I choose you!
Arishok: *Deathstare*
Merrill: Do you like knock-knock jokes?
Arishok: *Facepalm*

CRITICAL "D'AWWW!"
:o

Merrill: You know, I sort of miss the Qunari.  They didn't talk much, but they were easy on the eyes.

Why was this not an option?

Not only is it awesome. but it would save me the annoyingly long battle with the Arishok.

I'm afraid it would fail, Merrill would try to cheer him up, but no such thing is possible..

Merrill: Knock-Knock
Arishok: *sigh*........ Who is it......
Merrill: The Tome of Koslun!
Arishok: WHERE!?
Merrill: ..It was part of the joke...
Varric: .... It seems jokes aren't part of the Qun for a reason...

For some reason that made me think of Merrill's pier comment, and then I thought of Merrill and the Arishok sitting on the end of the pier one late afternoon while Merrill asked every question she could think of.

"Wait, aren't you scared of falling in? You're rather heavy, aren't you? I mean, with all those weapons and armour on. But your muscles must weigh a lot too, don't they? Can Qunari swim? Well you did get here on a Dreadnought, so that would make sense... Right?" Etc.

Merrill: Hawke...
Hawke: Yes, Merrill?
Merrill: What are you thinking about?
Hawke: The future - our future.
Merrill: Ooh! Tell me, tell me, I want to know!
Hawke: ... *eyes glisten* Elf-blooded babies *motions one hand before them* - everywhere.
Merrill: Aww.
Hawke: So many so that we won't have time to name them, we'll use numbers, first in Elven then in the King's Tongue.
Merrill: Really?
Hawke: Yes, really. Remember not only is my bloodline fraught with magic, also - Twins.
Merrill: Oh my. *puts her hands on her belly warily*
Hawke: Merrill.
Merrill: *bottom lip trembling* Yes, Hawke?
Hawke: I'm joking.
Merrill: Oh thank, Mythal. *buries her face in his chest*
Hawke: You really thought I'd turn you into some kind of Shemlen Broodmother?
Merrill: Oh no, I just don't think you'd have enough time to do all your adventuring AND wash their nappies. Remember, amongst the Dalish the women take care of what goes into the wee ones its the men who take care of what comes out of them.
Hawke: ... Do you think we have enough of that lady bits tea aboard Isabela's ship?

On the "surprisingly bitter things I never expected her to say" front, I was kind of surprised by Merrill's line to Master Ilen about "roses and rainbows." She's actually pretty snarky.

you should've heard what she said to Hahren Paivel in Act 1. Just have her stand near him for a little bit.

For all the people who said that she wasn't confident anymore, they really don't know what they're talking about. She's extremely confident around her clan seeing as she pretty much tells Ilen that he and the rest of the clan can shove their fear of the old ways up their ass, along with getting angry with Marethari at the end of Mirror Image.

She's really confident around her clan because she's lived with them her whole life and she's extremely nervous around humans because she's only met one in her whole life (Duncan). Hell, Duncan was a friend to the Dalish so I guess she may have considered him one of the family. Or at least not someone to be feared.

She still needs Hawke to come with her for moral support when she's asking for the Arulin'holm, though.
