She didn't want Merrill messing around with a demon that was trapped in a statue for centuries and would continue to be trapped unless someone freed it, but she had absolutely no qualms about sending Merrill to fight a Varterral that went ape**** all over 3 of their hunters.

How's that any diffrent then Merril wanting to work on a mirror in the first place because a demon told her it would help her people way before she did her research?

Plus Merrill is with three armed people and a Varterral is nowhere near as dangerous as a demon.

Why wouldn't it help her people?  Any little bit of knowledge of the past will help those that have lost it all.

Who says?  I can say in game, the varterral battle is more difficult that the Audacity one (which is a cake walk, IMO).

Merrill is also with three armed people when facing a demon that's bound, cut off from the Fade, and powerless.

She had been working with the shard of the Eluvian long before even meeting Audacity.

Plus Merrill is with three armed people and a Varterral is nowhere near as dangerous as a demon.

And if the Varterral killed her? Or all 4 people? What then? There's no guarantee that Merrill will survive. It's still a clear and present danger that presents a very real threat to Merrill because Marethari sent her to fight it. If 3 hunters couldn't defeat the Varterral when it started to attack them, thinking that 4 people will be able to conquer the Varterral is a bit foolish for Marethari to think.

Note: I like both characters and both frustrate me at ccertain parts *goes back to his friendship Merrill pt*

Also Merrill has faught worse then some bug rock thing, to think Merrill would not beat it would be insulting.

I think it was obvious to Merrill that an Elven artifact would help her people. I just don't think she knew the specifics of how it would help because she had never seen it before, and Audacity just filled her in.

I abhor Marethari for what she did to Merrill, even if it was out of some warped sense of motherly love.

But seriously, she's only faced corpses, a few Darkspawn, and demons. Maybe she's faced the Ancient Rock Wraith, but that's the only thing that can compare to the Varterral seeing as how the Varterrals were made to be protectors to the ancient Elves.

I mean, I know that Merrill will triumph with her cuteness. That was a given. The Varterral would just go "D'awww!". It's Marethari's thinking and hypocrisy that bothers me.

I'm still disapointed that Merrills spec was not cuteness.

Use Puppy eyes: Enamies are stunned for 500 minutes while d'awwing at Merrill. Also causes friendly d'aww

Yes, indeed. It was dangerous to send Merrill out with Hawke, alone and without the angry human beside her, she'd just walk away from any potentially murderous monsters, leaving them suffering from accute "D'awww!"

I took it as Merrill had already decided that it could be of benefit to her people (or Tamlen/Mahariel specifically) and the demon told her how to purify it.  I think it would be obvious to any Dalish First that an ancient elven artifact would help their people in some way as that is their basic purpose (restore lost elven knowledge).  She doesn't need a demon to tell her how to do her job, but help her do her job.

Of course...Hawke often puts Merrill in all kinds of danger, but when it comes to one demon all of a sudden Merrill needs to be protected.  This makes no sense.

It'd be great to have a DA2 DLC where Hawke "checks in" on the companions during their 3 year stretches. Basically its a set of missions where Hawke takes on a new identity via some kinda potion or amulet from Xenon's cache that casts an illusion on Hawke, maybe its to hide from assassins/templars/etc. but takes advantage of the deception to go on adventures/hijinks/shenanigans with the crew. Like hiring Fenris as a bodyguard or getting arrested by Aveline to taunt her from a cell or just following Merrill around as she ventures around Kirkwall for a few days to witness what she goes through.

I think it'd be kind of fun to pick on/observe/tease your friends and loved ones. OOH OOH, even possibly visit a Bethany/Carver at the Chantry-Gallows/Warden Compound.

OK so Merrill is essential for MOTA. My first play through shall probably be Fenris, Isabela, Archer Hawke and Merrill.

ETA and I just realised I can only take 2, dammit. Out goes Isabela then.
