Messed around with Merrill's headmorph for funsies. This is about as close as I could get her to her new appearance. I couldn't figure out how to get it onto the actual NPC, but anyway, thought I'd share.
Alistair's genetic elf-fancying is kicking in, in the background there.

Have another Merrill. *toss at Isabela* This time it's Angry Kitten Merrill!
I made up the shoes and the rest of the gloves, before anyone asks whether I've found concept art or more screenshots.

. Everyone here is equally steeped in baseless speculation.
There are three things we do know about Merrill- so the speculation is not completely baseless.
1. If you played the Dalish origin, you have interacted with her. She is a nice, is somewhat bossy Dalish elf mage I think. So any comments about her niceness is not without basis.
2. She is tiny and astonishingly busty as per the screenshot, but this has been explained as robe/angle gone wrong. Doesn't stop the "Chris Hanson wants to speak to you" comments, but unless a new screenshot comes on by, no chance of this dying out.
3. At least one writer has expressed enthusiasm for her. Now I am sure it outraged that Lyon dude that the word "squee" was used in reference to a character, and this spells doom for RPGs everywhere, but as far as I am concerned that is the BEST advertisement for me. Beyond how hot he looks, or whether she has great cleavage, or is hung like a giant horse or whatever criteria people use to judge how they will take to an NPC.
I was not enthusiastic about Alistair until David Gaider said he was *his* favorite character that he had written thus far and that is what got me intrigued. Same goes for Merrill. When Sheryl squees about Merrill, the very same Sheryl who writes NPCs daily? I think that is a character worth looking out for. I am sure you don't agree, because your criteria for judging NPCs seems....*completely* different than mine.
As far as your being "singled out.". It is hard not to be. I am no psychologist* but I think we all get pegged depending on the behavior we most consistently display in the forums- especially if we are regulars. I am sure developers and forumites roll their eyes when they see my posts awaiting the inevitable "oh no she is going to lament that the new forums are not as awesome as the old forums again".
I am sure the are forumites who have become so darn predictable, everyone thinks they know what is coming. In your case, I fear you *may* have been dubbed as a person who doesn't have constructive criticism to offer but does it often and vociferously anyway. Which is sad because I think you, and some other such equally vociferous, strongly opinionated forumites have some awesome suggestions. They just are epic fail when it comes to delivery which guarantees they will rarely be heeded.
No developer in this universe will begrudge you the right to criticize or dislike something. They are professionals. Nor will any forumite. We dislike many aspects too. But unless your reason seems more valid than "the_one doesn't like it", it is just going to be seen as ranting, by them, and by everyone else.
*..Wait I AM a psychologist.
/ LOVE Pseudo's kitten MERRIL. So cute. But that is because I love kittens.

I just realized, she's standing downhill and walking up towards Hawke in this animation. I have a feeling she's at least around as tall as Isabella is, after studying the gif for a moment. Except the proportions are skewed horizontally to be very... spindly. (...Like an Elf.)
Of course, this is exactly wait the Devs said was the case. But I had to blindly believe him (that my eyes were deceiving me), before. The dots didn't connect in my head... spacially until now.
Of course, this makes both the fanart about Isabella picking her up and the one of Hawke shoving her in a backpack not even remotely accurate.

The writer of Merrill is supposed to be so petite she could fit into an Ikea vase. Or maybe even a Birkin purse. Though in reality she is not that tiny. She just alters perceptions of size.
Sometimes, writers confer upon their characters a bit of themselves. Sten liked cookies, just like Mary does. Loghain liked dogs, just like Mary does. Merrill may not be pint sized but because of one act she will forever be perceived as roughly the size of a sugar plum fairy.

Perhaps it's just some kind of Dalish Pariah power.
The awesome powers of a Keeper and Blood Mage combined... it actually just makes you get short. Really, really short. And adorable.

Short, adorable, and able to summon demons. They never see her coming. It's the perfect disguise.

Now, after analysis of the new elven physiology I am almost sure that emissary come from the elven brotherhood. Look at the skull of his skeleton- the nose/brow area in particular, not to mention the ears and overal litheness.
I think it was suggested when this first came out that the emissary pictured might be a "Shriek Emissary" (or effectively such, if it is the only type depicted in DA2). Sharlock Emissary.
On topic: Merrill is awesome. I want to know what her voice is going to be like. Beyond, y'know, being Welsh.
