I've been replaying the Dalish origin story in DAO and is it me or does Merrill come across as being older than Merrill in DA2? There she comes across as being very calm, confident and relatively mature.
The only people she talks to in the Dalish Origin are Mahariel, Fenarel, and Marethari. In DAII she says she was friends with Mahariel, so of course she would be confident there. In DAII, there is a bit of banter between Fenarel and Merrill where they talk IIRC, and again she's confident. And with Marethari, she hadn't taken up blood magic or taken the Eluvian shard, so there wasn't really any
noticeable reason for Merrill to not be confident around her.
That said, DAII shows us that her confidence amongst the clan goes beyond those 3. She tells Master Ilen that the clan needs to shove their fears of the old ways up their ass and tells Hahren Paivel to just shut up and she'll eventually leave.
As for her being older, if you mean looks-wise she is older I didn't see it. I thought both incarnations looked the same age. If you mean by her persona, then again I don't see her being "older" than DAII's Merrill.
I get the fact that DA2 Merrill might be more nervous with Hawke and companions as she is not used to humans
That's exactly it. That's what I've been saying to many Merrill-bashers who say "Oh she's do dumb because she doesn't know what to do in Kirkwall!"
The fact of the matter is that she's only met one human before: Duncan. And that was her first time ever meeting with one. She's nervous around humans because she's never been around them for significant amounts of time. And that's natural.
but she also confesses to being nervous of talking to Marathari.
At first yes, but immediately after Hawke says to Merrill that he's there to support her, she regains her confidence. After the Varterral is slain in that quest, she gets angry with the Keeper and her confidence is clear as daylight.
Now however disapproving the Keeper might be, the Merrill of DAO doesn't strike me as someone who would hold back from confrontation once she had decided on something.
Neither did DAII's Merrill. Hence why she decided to continue her work on the Eluvian despite the Keeper disagreeing with Merrill's choice in various ways.
The only time you get a hint of the old Merrill is when Hawke refuses to give her the tool or return to Sundermount but even then it seems a forced attempt at authority and of course she then backtracks later on and apologises. I just don't see the Merrill of DAO doing that. Being assertive would come more naturally and she would not back down if she felt herself to be in the right. I like both versions of Merrill but they strike me as two completely different people.
DAII Merrill is assertive around Marethari.
"We did what you asked. Now give me the Arulin'holm".
