There's a reference in DA:O to Merrill knowing the Keeper's healing magics so...why not?
Maybe it stops working after the bloodmagery?
Well, no, that doesn't work; there's the option to fix Connor in DAO with blood magic from Jowan...
It's my belief -- and the game's various descriptions of blood magic and the abilities supports this -- that blood magic can be used beneficially. That is to say medicinally to heal other people.
Blood Magic allows for the manipulation of the flow of blood, which means that one could use blood magic to manipulate the blood flow of a seriously wounded person so that they're not subject to arterial spraying or sliced veins or what have you.
This way, a blood mage could serve the community in great ways. Especially if one made it a point to cleanse tainted areas with blood magic.
EDIT: Granted it would be tricky to find a mage who wouldn't abuse the powers of blood magic. But that's why I've got one idea for a countermeasure.
If you don't want to be spoiled to parts of my fanfic -- assuming you read it. General all-encompassing you, not a specific you --, do not read ahead!
In my ideal fanfic story which I'm writing the Litany of Adralla will be copied and handed out to the Templars of Orzammar -- Dwarven Templars with no ties to the Chantry --, the Templars under Alistair's rule, and those Templars under Viscount Tobias Hawke's rule.
And Tobias is pro-mage. He won't be killing mages to attain that political position.

I think there's only two occasions where Merrill tells Hawke "stories", one with the dog, and one involving the sylvanwood ring. Is this right? I need to collect a bunch of lore for a li'l' something.
Yup, but there are codex entries that detail a few Dalish stories -- like The Tale of Iloren -- though there is a timeline issue with this one.

There's the stuff about Mythal on the way up to Sundermount in Act 3

- Merrill: (Sighs) Why do you even like me? I must seem so dull.
- Isabela: What brought this on?
- Merrill: Your life has been... so exciting. The adventures, the duels, the passionate love affairs.
- Merrill: Compared to that, my life is a stale, dry biscuit. (Sighs) I wish I had your life.
- Isabela: No. You don't want my life.
- Merrill: Why?
- Isabela: Because you have a good heart, and you deserve better.

I quite like the companion dialogue between Isabela and Merrill. She looks after her like a younger sister. One conversation in particular has my attention:I like this conversation and what Isabela had to say to Merrill. It's really touching but at the same time has caused me some cognitive dissonance.

Telling Merrill that this is something she doesn't wish this kind of life for her seems like Isabela is making an admission of shame towards her own lifestyle otherwise she wouldn't have said it, I think.
I understand Isabela and I would agree, but it doesn't jell well logically.

Not shame, necessarily, more like unfulfilling; perhaps a recognition that Isabela wants Merrill to have a committed relationship, or more that Isabela believes Merrill would be happier with a committed relationship.

Well, there is that. She feels that this isn't a life that is suited for Merrill, but that's being a bit judgmental on her part.
Isabela hardly strikes me as being judgemental...ever. I see it more that Isabela tends to look out for Merrill, a kind of big-sister type relationship sometimes, and that's the spirit in which she's talking. That's just my interpretation, though.

It's a shame she never followed up on her last line to any Hawke who rivalmanced her. That would be hilarious.(her conversation with male Hawke romancing Merrill was pretty cool).

I agree.
Isabela is actually seems quite satisfied with herself and her life but knows it's not for everyone. It's a practical outlook. Also, Merrill only sees the sexy and romantic side to being a pirate and all that but Isabela knows that it's not all fun and games.

Also, it seems like Isabela is the only character in game that is recognized for having had a relationship w/ another woman. I find it disappointing that none of the other characters react to LadyHawke's relationship w/ Merrill or any other female NPC that the player romanced as LadyHawke.

I think Isabela regrets quite a lot about her life. She clearly feels guilty about her selfishness and she avoids true intimacy because she believes she'll betray it.
That seems true from what I've seen. I haven't romanced her yet. I only romanced Merrill. First playthrough.
Lots of NPCs react to Merrill/LadyHawke
They probably only react b/c Hawke is w/ a Dalish elsf and not b/c they're both women.
