I think there's only two occasions where Merrill tells Hawke "stories", one with the dog, and one involving the sylvanwood ring. Is this right? I need to collect a bunch of lore for a li'l' something.

There's a reference in DA:O to Merrill knowing the Keeper's healing magics so...why not?

Maybe it stops working after the bloodmagery?

Well, no, that doesn't work; there's the option to fix Connor in DAO with blood magic from Jowan...

It's my belief -- and the game's various descriptions of blood magic and the abilities supports this -- that blood magic can be used beneficially. That is to say medicinally to heal other people.

Blood Magic allows for the manipulation of the flow of blood, which means that one could use blood magic to manipulate the blood flow of a seriously wounded person so that they're not subject to arterial spraying or sliced veins or what have you.

This way, a blood mage could serve the community in great ways. Especially if one made it a point to cleanse tainted areas with blood magic.

EDIT: Granted it would be tricky to find a mage who wouldn't abuse the powers of blood magic. But that's why I've got one idea for a countermeasure.

If you don't want to be spoiled to parts of my fanfic -- assuming you read it. General all-encompassing you, not a specific you --, do not read ahead!

In my ideal fanfic story which I'm writing the Litany of Adralla will be copied and handed out to the Templars of Orzammar -- Dwarven Templars with no ties to the Chantry --, the Templars under Alistair's rule, and those Templars under Viscount Tobias Hawke's rule.

And Tobias is pro-mage. He won't be killing mages to attain that political position.

I just recently realized that the title of this thread is a double pun. Nice.

Yup, but there are codex entries that detail a few Dalish stories -- like The Tale of Iloren -- though there is a timeline issue with this one.

There's the stuff about Mythal on the way up to Sundermount in Act 3

Cool; they're not quite what I was thinking of, but they might still be helpful. Thanks too!

I quite like the companion dialogue between Isabela and Merrill. She looks after her like a younger sister. One conversation in particular has my attention:

  • Merrill: (Sighs) Why do you even like me? I must seem so dull.
  • Isabela: What brought this on?
  • Merrill: Your life has been... so exciting. The adventures, the duels, the passionate love affairs.
  • Merrill: Compared to that, my life is a stale, dry biscuit. (Sighs) I wish I had your life.
  • Isabela: No. You don't want my life.
  • Merrill: Why?
  • Isabela: Because you have a good heart, and you deserve better.
I like this conversation and what Isabela had to say to Merrill. It's really touching but at the same time has caused me some cognitive dissonance.

Well, to start off we know that Isabela is proud of her profession as a pirate, or at least she displays a high amount of self-esteem, and she engages in a metric s***-ton of sex, which she is not ashamed of (nor should she be), and it doesn't seem like it's something she does compulsively either, she also enjoys reading cheesy sex novels and is a tad on the perverted side, which, once again she is not ashamed of and throughout all this she. If it's all good enough for her, then why isn't it good enough for Merrill as well?

Telling Merrill that this is something she doesn't wish this kind of life for her seems like Isabela is making an admission of shame towards her own lifestyle otherwise she wouldn't have said it, I think.

I understand Isabela and I would agree, but it doesn't jell well logically.

Not shame, necessarily, more like unfulfilling; perhaps a recognition that Isabela wants Merrill to have a committed relationship, or more that Isabela believes Merrill would be happier with a committed relationship.

Well, there is that. She feels that this isn't a life that is suited for Merrill, but that's being a bit judgmental on her part.

I kind of took Isabela's comments as a kind of "no romance" dialog with Merrill. As the romance with Isabela and Hawke showed, Isabela worries about anyone falling in love with her since she "doesn't want to be tied down" and fears hurting/disappointing anyone who does fall in love with her. It's pretty obvious that she doesn't want anyone to hurt Merrill (her conversation with male Hawke romancing Merrill was pretty cool).

Isabela hardly strikes me as being judgemental...ever. I see it more that Isabela tends to look out for Merrill, a kind of big-sister type relationship sometimes, and that's the spirit in which she's talking. That's just my interpretation, though.

Well, okay then. It's not like I found the dialogue between Merrill and Isabela disagreeable in any way. I think it's nice for a person like her who is greedy and lusty actually has a heart of gold. Isabela is easily one of the most likeable characters in the game and her affection towards Merrill endears her more to me.

It's a shame she never followed up on her last line to any Hawke who rivalmanced her. That would be hilarious.

I agree.

Isabela is actually seems quite satisfied with herself and her life but knows it's not for everyone.  It's a practical outlook.  Also, Merrill only sees the sexy and romantic side to being a pirate and all that but Isabela knows that it's not all fun and games.

Yeah, I think that as much as Isabela's mostly happy with her own conduct and the things she's chosen for herself, I... don't think that makes up the entirety of her life. Or even necessarily the majority, depending on how long she was married and whether her talisman dialog or her postcoital dialog is more representative of her relationship with her mother. I'm not sure what Isabela would think about Merrill having a lot of carefree casual sex, but I know for a fact she wouldn't want anyone to sell her to a stranger for a handful of gold, or for her to get stuck between Castillon and the Arishok, and that's just what we know about.

Well, these are very personal issues that she openly talks about in normal conversation. Isabela loves sex and sex loves Isabela. I don't think that she does so compulsively. I don't think she does it b/c she's trying to fill some void. It's just a part of the crazy life she lives.

Also, it seems like Isabela is the only character in game that is recognized for having had a relationship w/ another woman. I find it disappointing that none of the other characters react to LadyHawke's relationship w/ Merrill or any other female NPC that the player romanced as LadyHawke.

I think Isabela regrets quite a lot about her life.  She clearly feels guilty about her selfishness and she avoids true intimacy because she believes she'll betray it.

That seems true from what I've seen. I haven't romanced her yet. I only romanced Merrill. First playthrough.

They probably only react b/c Hawke is w/ a Dalish elsf and not b/c they're both women.

There's plenty of mentions as Merrill romanced "Her" but no one really remarks specific to the gender which Merrill romanced. All the dialogue is just the same as if it was a man, just with her rplacing him of course.

It seems like the good people of Thedas don't care about a person's sexual orientation. Good for them.
