The 'poetess=lesbian' thing is referenced by Leliana and that idiot templar Carroll in this conversation:

To get this dialogue, you have to try to enter the Circle Tower with Leliana in your party. If Morrigan is also in the line-up, however, Cullen prefers her to Leliana.

By others than Oghren?

There's this conversation with Carroll

Carroll: "That redhead there at the back... she doesn't need to go to
the tower, does she? Because it gets a little lonely out here sometimes
and you know, you could leave her with me--"
Leliana: "What? Er... no. I'm sorry, I'm... a poetess! And I am not interested in anything you have to offer."
Carroll:
"I've never met a poetess... The other men sometimes tell stories about
them... when the knight-commander isn't around, of course. He doesn't
abide that sort of talk..."
Leliana: "Pha. The stories sheltered
templars tell will pale in comparison to mine. Would you like to hear my
tales of debautchery and excess?"
Carroll: "Y-yes... please?
Leliana: "I'm sure we could talk on that long, dull boatride across the lake, yes?"
Carroll: "Er... yes, definitely? Are we going now?"

(edit:I'm slow)

Ah, i see. I thought it was just a Oghren/Hespith thing.

I always bring Sten to that boatride, in favor of cookies. Gotta try Leli next time.

It seems like the good people of Thedas don't care about a person's sexual orientation. Good for them.

I don't think they even have labels for it, such as 'homosexual' or 'heterosexual'...these labels are a pretty recent thing for us even.

So Hawke isn't a 'lesbian' but just 'a woman who exclusively dates other women'.

Nobles are expected to marry other nobles and have kids, so people of Thedas would find it odd that Hawke is shacking up with a elven woman.  However, they would find it just as odd for her to shack up with any of the other LIs, minus Sebastian I suppose since he's royalty.  They aren't going to burn down the estate because they view homosexual behavior as an 'evil abomination against nature and all that is holy' but they'll just view it as another odd thing that Hawke does in a long list of odd things that Hawke does.

Seeing as how Hawke probably stepped and quite a few toes throughout the game, shacking up w/ an elf would probably be the straw that broke the camel's back.

So, a gay woman says she's a "poetess" to turn away horny males, does a gay man say he's a, I don't know, a hairdresser? Or maybe a blacksmith?

Well, isn't that a daisy? Still, Bethany is probably rthe only person in Thedas that is shocked by Isabela for seeping w/ another woman.

Sure....here's a link to the banner without Liara.

Which is a bit odd for my rogue Hawke considering she slept with women while they lived together in Lothering.  Perhaps she didn't brag about her sexploits to Bethany?  That's what I say.

Thanks. Now, all I have to do is to diminish the size of the banner.

Head canon works....I do that to fix a lot of things.

I need to get back to playing DA2 so I can finish my Aggro!Hawke mage. She might be my fave personality for the Merrill romance.

I kinda agree a bit with you jlb524.

I always felt that the Diplo Hawke was with Merrill despite the faults the recognized she had. "It's OK that you're stupid..."
Sarcastic just ignored it. "On to next topic: Let's make fun of the nobles!"
I loved that agressive stood up for her, "You don't say stupid things! And i want you here with me!"

Yeah, that's why I think the two play off each other the best. Aggro!Hawke presents a tough exterior and is all about standing up for herself and doesn't give a crap what others think. Merrill needs a confidence boost so I think Hawke's influence is a good thing here.

Then I think Merrill softens this Hawke up a bit...makes her less cynical perhaps.

Canon is the wrong word, canon refers to a official standard, that is not what people mean when they say it.
"Head Canon" are used to settle things in a order which isn't achieveable in the actual product, be that a game, a book or a movie.
A good place to use your imagination for that sort of thing is in holes like the years between, after or before the events of this game.
I assume jlb524 means that she imagined her Hawke as a experienced womanizer from before she met Merrill.
Simple.

Yes, that's one thing.

And I 'head canon' in more interaction between my Hawke and the others...nights spent at the 'Hanged Man', for instance.  Or imagining Hawke was doing something important in between years 4 and 7 besides chilling in her estate.

I guess it's more like filling in a void than 'fixing'.

It's basically fan fiction that I never write down XD

Headcanon: because if there's one thing DA2 taught me, it's that NO event is too important to take place off-camera...

Merril scares the crap out of me. She's sort of the walking embodiment of "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." She knew all the rules and was somehow certain she was the exception to all of them, like no one before her had ever been "careful" and "taken every possible precaution." That it was not going to end wall was painfully obvious.

Yes she's adorable and dorky. It's what makes her such a great villain.

I'm aware of the term head canon it's just she chose to use the word fixed, which seemed peculiar to me.

Hmmm...I'm not sure if I head-canon fix anything.  I probably do but can't think of it now.  It's mainly additions.

Well, considering that you were giving your Hawke some backstory on her sex life in Lothering. I don't know what the protocol for romantic relationships were back then. I can't apply the Middle Ages to Thedas. I have no backstory for my Hawke, in terms of who she slept w/.

As for my head canon, w/ regards to her relationship w/ Merrill, I'll just say that blood magic makes things a little bit freakier. Yeah.

My main head canon "fix" is changing the timing so everything doesn't happen in 3 short bursts and is instead spread about the 7 years of Hawke's life in Kirkwall.

In that vein, in my head canon Merrill and Hawke don't jump into bed quite so immediately. At least not in the friendship romance.

It's not the time from meeting her which I'm referring to, but the time from the romance starting.

The jump from being friends with occasional flirting to moving in together is a bit abrupt for my taste.
