Well, I told her that we will be together. I guess that means that she'll still obsess over that damn mirror.
Well, you can still tell her to help the alienage if you "friendship" romance her, and she will continue to be your snuggle bunny. You just keep that incredibly dangerous portal of evil. If she does get it working and Morrigan steps out, I seriously doubt that Morrigan would be in the mood for a threesome. Hell, Morrigan is probably more dangerous than that Pride demon that was trying to manipulate Merrill.

Well, I told her that we will be together. I guess that means that she'll still obsess over that damn mirror.
The friendship path -- and even moreso the friendship romance -- actually leads to her making the mirror a project she's dedicated to and not obsessed with. If she's kidnapped in Best Served Cold -- possibly one of the biggest fails of storytelling ever -- she admits that the thing she couldn't live without was Hawke.
The thought of being without Hawke tore her up a bit.
Not only that, but the friendship path has Varric coming to try and get her to get some fresh air. Well... as fresh as Kirkwall air can be, and she admits she should go out and says she'll walk around with Hawke.
To be honest, now that she knows she has people she can rely on and trust on the friendship path -- something the Rivalry path makes her unable to do -- and now that she's not obsessed with it, I tell her to continue working on the mirror.
Since there's absolutely no inherent danger from the mirror I have no qualms about it. Both games point to Merrill being right about it.
Ideally what I wanted to do -- and what I'm going to do for my fanfic -- is tell her to work on the mirror, help the Alienage, and be with Hawke.

Merrill pretty much concludes her investigation into the Eluvian, regardless of whether Hawke endorsed her efforts in Friendship or opposed them in Rivalry. It's the reason why she stops going back to her home in the Alienage and resides full-time at the Amell manor.

I don;t know what the deal w/ the eluvian is, but it seems to be some kind of portal. Merrill is too naive for her own good. She thinks that a man getting mugged out side of her house is the way they welcome new people in the alienage.
It seemed like Merrill was joking, which she often does (i.e. Anders and Ser Pounce-A-Lot, followed by talking to Bethany about having a pet griffin named Feathers). Just listen to her when she heads back to the Sabrae clan and speaks to Ilen about how "wonderful" the Alienage is.
Ravensword wrote...
She also thinks that people picking your pocket is the same thing as a handshake or something akin to it. The issue w/ the eluvian is one that almost got her in trouble. She was being manipulated by a demon into turning to blood magic in order to work on the eluvian so that it can use it as a portal to escape.
Considering Marethari became an abomination by letting Audacity loose from its imprisonment, I don't see how Merrill is the naive one. Merrill knew there were dangers to dealing with dealing with "spirits," listen to her when she addresses Anders about how dangerous the denizens of the Fade are: "Anders... there's no such thing as a good spirit. There never was. All spirits are dangerous. I understood that. I'm sorry that you didn't."

Merrill seemed to have failed to listen to what the Keeper told her about the demon before dying. W/ the demon dead, at least we don't have to worry about Merrill becoming an abomination.
You mean Merrill had an opinion about how the Eluvian could possibly help the People, perhaps even irrevocably change the lives of elves across Thedas with revolutionary technology, based on research Gaider addressed she did by studying lore and extrapolating information from the shard, while Marethari had an opinion based on what she thought their ancient ancestors would have wanted. I'd trust the scholar who put the time in and did the research over the person who had an uninformed opinion and let a demon loose.

So, Hawke, Merrill and Desire Demon. Discuss.
I think summoning a demon to spice up your sex life would strike the average mage as a bad idea. Even Merrill 'messing with shrines to Old Gods is cool' might question the wisdom of doing this.

Bolded bit happens on the rivalrymance as well.
Or at least I remember something similar happening.

Hawke doesn't share, and especially not with demons. Now, Isabela and Desire Demon, that would be something.Ravensword wrote...

For all her social naivety i find her far better learned in matters of magic then Anders. Also i approve
of merril+hawke+desire demon

I hope so. She was screwing around w/ a portal to hell.

I think I'm gonna have to side w/ Marethari on this one. Merrill does indeed know about the dangers of the spirits of the Fade but Audacity was able to make a deal w/ Merrill. No one should make deals w/ demons in the Fade. Audacity wanted her to finish the eluvian so he could use that as a portal to escape his imprisonment and then possess Merrill. Audacity was getting the better of Merrill. He was praying on Merrill's Dalish pride and her hope to restore her people to greatness and was succeeding. Justice isn't a demon but a spirit that embodies the principle of justice. Anders' own rage corrupted Justice and turned him into the spirit of Vengeance.

Well, you know what they say. The road to hell is paved w/ good intentions. Maybe Merrill can continue her work on the eluvian w/o consorting w/ demons.

In the rivalry romance with my BF's female mage Hawke she warns Hawke NOT to fall in love with her because she does not want Hawke to get hurt. She admits that the mirror presents a danger to her and everyone around her meaning she had been lying about it for six years.
Marethari's flaw is that "she loved Merrill more than the clan it seems." She made herself a prison for a Pride Demon to prevent Merrill from becoming an abomination. She kept her clan close to a hostile human city for years waiting for Merrill to change her mind and return to the clan. She revealed the Pride Demon in front of Hawke's party which had already been prepared to go to battle knowing that she would die in order to destroy it.
Marethari did save Merrill for the time being but probably at the cost of her entire clan. Even if Hawke does not kill them all they are still camped right outside a hostile human city with no Keeper, no halla and a depleted number of hunters.

Yes, she has a similar scene in the rivalry. It is vertually identical, but I believe she is slightly snarky when she says that she will go get some air with Hawke.

Yeah, Merrill knows it is dangerous but she's not about to tell Aveline or anyone else this (besides Hawke).
Merrill thinks all magic is dangerous, tbh.

Her intent is still to jest....even if she's bad at it.

From some of her party banter with Anders and Aveline, I get the impression that Merrill knows that she sounds "dumb" and many of her "innocent and naive" closing statements to those chats are actually snarky retorts and dismissals.

That's open to interpretation and I won't mock yours. My interpretation of the rivalry path is that she know longer needs to find some magic artifact to gain some sense of worth. She no longer needs Hawke to hold her hand and stroke her ego in order to become the baddest cute Dalish blood mage fallen Keeper the world has ever seen.

But she's not lying, is she? The mirror isn't dangerous. And even if it was, Merrill doesn't think it is, and thus is not lying either way.Maria Caliban wrote...
