Iz Santa Merrill.

She knocks politely, and offers you a cheese wedge and a miscellaneous ring of +2 Cold Resistance that she promises is very useful this time of year in Kirkwall?

I like to think she's reflecting on the winters of Ferelden.

I'm wondering if Thedas even has a Christmas-like holiday. I kinda hope so.

EDIT: Feastday doesn't count. That's more like April Fool's.

I wonder what the name of the months is in Thedas, is that ever mentioned?

Regardless: Merrill Christmas to all of you! Image IPB

Edit: Perhaps Andrastmas?

@ydaraishy: I dunno, the solstice wouldn't really be a holiday I think.

@Knight of Dane: I think the DA wiki has a list of all the months.

And Merrill Christmas to everyone! Or Merrill Andrastmas! Whatever -mas it is, I hope you celebrate it very Merrilly!

Y no? Early civilizations tended to treat them with great reverence. Not a coincidence a lot of festivals in our society are around the time of the solstices...

Thedas is in the southern hemisphere, so our winter holidays would happen at the beginning of her summer.

Huh, you're right. That means Thedosians are really all just Australians? :)

I gave up on trying to match the various regions of Thedas with locations in the real world when I learned there were lions in Orlais.

Seasons greetings and all that, Merril lovers. I'm actually going to ask a brief question of opinion.

I'm in the middle of another DA2 playthrough (Number four or five, I think) That said, I'm trying to go with one that's supposed to be a sort of..."evolving hero" story. Sticking by his brother at the start, he pushes mages toward the circle, but when Carver goes away to the Gray Wardens (friend) he becomes more disenchanted toward the system, but ultimately befriends most of his companions. Even so, he's (Hawke) not a blood mage and I'm not quite sure how he should handle Merril. He's definitely not going to rivalmance her from the start, but as I recall her friendship can flip to rivalry in her Act 2 personal quest, and I'm wondering which you guys think would be the more rewarding romance.

When I first did it, Merril was actually too enthusiastic about the relic I couldn't keep it from her, even so, I later got around to having the right mindset as to why she should be stopped from using it, what with the eluvian controversy.

Even so, I digress. Do you guys think, "Friendmance" or "Rivalmance" for this run?

Note: No words can actually express how awesome I think the Merril christmas picture is. It's so damn adorable.

It's a matter of perspective and RP as to what is more "rewarding" or not. What does he think of blood magic, the Chantry, dealing with Things Unknown? What does he think of elves? What does he think about the risk/reward ratio with Merrill's work? What does he think about interfering or preventing in others' lives in general?

Friendmance. For a few reasons why:

Friendmance allows her to study the Eluvian without it encompassing her whle entire life. Her obsession becomes a devoted hobby.

Not to mention how wrong Marethari and her actions are, which doesn't even require metagaming. You can see it demonstrated within the game.

Friendship also allows her to trust the people closest to her, while Rivalry makes her feel like she's alone.

Also, Hawke has no place to tell Merrill about what elements of Elven culture she should study, when Hawke is just a human.

And Merrill uses blood magic responsibly, and she only deals with Audacity 3 times. The first with Marethari, the second to learn blood magic, and the third is when Marethari released the demon. Merrill went there with no intention of freeing Audacity.

I could give all of the reasons why I prefer Friendmance, but I've done that so many times.

While true for our world, I don't know if Thedas even views it the same way.

Agricultural societies in general revere the solstice, and the societies we've seen, save the Dalish, are definitely agricultural. Many of the traditions that Thedas has seem to parallel comparable societies in the real world to a great extent.

i myself prefer the rivalmance, but also see the side of the friendmance. my reason is looking at the events of the game:
  • The Mirror-the thing is why she and the keeper do not agree and convinces her to decide to leave here clan.
  • Bloodmagic-it is this that makes her clan hate her. they fear bloodmagic for the same reason the Chantry forbids it: what it can do. it can be used to control people and drain the lifeforce of her friends.
  • herself-she says she knows what she is doing, and that she does not heed help (aka pride) this can be used by pride demons to get into her mind and turn her into an abomination. and on the rivalry path, Hawke can say that he/she is just trying to protect merrill, even if it is from herself.
what i am saying is the rivalmance is my favorite because it is based around "i love you, but your choices are causing you to get hurt and you don't even see it" or "your best friend is sometimes your worst enemy"

A good question. To be honest, I've never even thought about how my Hawke spends his day when he's not fighting. I'll have to reflect on that.

Off the top of my head, I imagine they talk a lot. Not just idle chatter about baby griffins and such, but about magic, elven culture and history. She didn't have formal education, but she was the first to a Keeper and is well-educated on a lot of topics. Plus, she's very inquisitive.

There's also the dog to walk, the estate to look after and their friends to visit.

i myself think its more of how the romance goes:
  • Friendmance-probably spend time working on the eluvian, which leads to them making love.
  • Rivalmance-most likely fighting over the eluvian and merrill's use of blood magic, ending in them forgiving eachother and making love.

That's a lot of sex. It's a wonder they have the energy to fight off all those street gangs.

They're people, draken-heart, not rabbits.
