Here is the version for a romanced Merrill:

Carver: A shame we didn't have time like this back in Kirkwall. Back then.
Merrill: If we have to be lost somewhere, at least it's a nice hallway! Very well built, not at all likely to collapse.
Carver: Right, well, let's get to it. My brother/sister will be missing you.
Merrill: I'm glad you think so.

It's been a year since I've met Merrill.

Even though the game wasn't that great, Merrill is one of BioWare's best characters.

Loved the dungeon rescue scene if you romanced her. "Did you shank someone?"

I liked Merrill. But I don't like male Hawke with Merrill. She's not too young for me (I'm in my mid-twenties), and I thought she was cute and very funny, but I thought she was too young for Hawke, what with all those wrinkles and beard and with her face and mannerisms. When I saw them both lying in bed side by side...oh man, I reloaded the game (sorry for my prejudices). Granted, I was mostly at fault for being too lazy and choosing the default face, but even his voice sounds very...mature. It fits the default face perfectly and young faces just didn't seem to match for me.

My point is that I think a great LI would be one where the player likes him/her, and the player likes the idea of his/her character being with him/her. I didn't like the idea of male Hawke being with Merrill, and I didn't like Isabella personally. Too bad for me I guess. :\\

So maybe a good suggestion: take away voice-acting for the player-character (apart from DAO-style voice choices) and increase face-customisation options. Then we can make a character of whatever age we like that'll fit whichever LI we like. Merril won't be "too young" for my strapping young lad anymore, stuff like that. For those people who really really love their PC to have a voice, just tell them to read the lines aloud to themselves or whatever.

If Bioware must absolutely have voice-acting for the PC, then the only way forward is to have more romance options. People won't complain so much about a particular LI if they had another LI that was suitable. I think a big problem with the choice of (at least female) LIs in DA2 was that it didn't provide sufficient variety to cater to a significant portion of the gaming community. I think DAO's romance choices (both guys and girls) were more mainstream (i.e. the more modelesque, young adult sort that people just love to hate), which helped.

In the wake of Dragon Age 2's Expansion 'Exalted March' being cancelled, I thusly present the Merrill centric expansion many of us wanted. Boasting 138 new levels, 36 Charecter classes, 4 prestige classes, full of bunnies and Griffins and happy endings, and blood magic and Elves and...did I mention Griffins?. The 18 disc expansion is
coming at the end of this millenium and it titled: Dragon Age 2: Exalted Frolic.

(Did this for the PAX East art showacse..thing BioWare are running. T'is only right I share it here too)

Oh, if only …

I truly think the Merrill fans lost out the most with the cancellation of the expansion. Call it a hunch, call it an educated guess, but I think Merrill was probably slated to make an appearance in the expansion, possibly even as a party member.

I totally agree with you!
And that's one more reason that made me get really dissapointed with Bioware (added to the non-ending story of course).
Even on the last Dlc's she was the only one (I think) that didn't have much relevance.
And I can't understand why! Despite all the haters (but haters gonna hate no matter what), as I can see by the forum she is one of the most liked characters! I really, really, really can't understand Bioware.
They had so much to explore in DA2 still. And although they already cancelled the expansion, a tiny part of me still hopes that they change their minds.
Oh and one thing, don't let the topic die! It's a way to show them how much we care for Merrill!
And that, even they stopped doing DA2 related stuff, we still expect her in DA3 (at least I expect)!

Cheers!

I wonder how much work was done on the expansion before they cancelled it. Maybe they'll use it in DA3, or probably not. I wonder how long a cameo Merrill will have in DA3.

Problem with DA3 cameo is I worry it'll split up Merrill and Hawke

Haha.  I quite like it!

As a first timer to the thread, I'm noticing it's not as long as some of the character ones in the Mass Effect section (specifically, the Tali one - my other LI)

Less Dragon Age fans, or less Merrill fans? Either is sad :(

Merrill would have to be twice as popular to come close to matching the near-rabid devotion of the Tali'Zorah fans.

But in truth, Merrill seems to be one of those "love her or hate her" characters. Either you find her personality quirks endearing and cute, or you find her annoying and naive. Likewise, you either sympathize with her reasons for bargaining with demons and working to restore the Eluvian or you dismiss her efforts as incredibly stupid.

That's certainly true. I found her really adorable, but like anything of that sort i can see how someone could be annoyed to no end.

The only reason I drew the connection to Tali was because of the similarities I see in their characters - both were characters I pretty much instantly decided to romance, for many of the same reasons.

I still think Merrill is closer to ME1 Liara than Tali. If Liara was studying Reaper tech.

Hmm, that's actually a decent parallel to strike too. I always thought Tali because of the focus on her people, the nervousness and all that, but Liara has some similarities too.

If you note that it's the same VA as the Arl of Denerim's son, it's worse (if you did the CE origin, or know what happens there).

Dunno. Merill has a very self-righteous undercurrent that makes her feel different than Tali and Liara (although Liara has a little bit of one). I agree they are all pretty similar though.

So I've been playing a new playthrough of DAII -- mainly for the companions since I abhor how the story was handled -- and I now have certifiable proof that Merrill is intelligent.

Flemeth says she is. And if a very powerful and knowledgable woman -- who is quite possibly a Dalish god -- says she's bright, then that's good enough for me.

I don't recall those lines and Aveline is one of my main companions I travel with. What triggers theses?

It's dialogue cut from the game, so you would never trigger it.
