I've read many of your posts defending Merrill and her intelligence. I am a Merill fan and feel she is intelligent in some areas and horribly naive in others. You seem to be pretty firm in your belief that she knew exactly what she was doing, in full control, in no danger, and any character in the game who doubts her is stupid. I disagree. There are many places where you see she has underestimated or not fully understood what she is dealing with. One example is her comment after the encounter with Iduanna where she says she didn't understand how powerful the effects of blood magic can be... and on her. She is very shocked and seems almost traumatized when she realizes this.

Also the "fish out of water" argument is used to explain her naiveness outside of her clan. This has some truth but she seems more naive than most. Look at Velanna. She is also a bit confused and taken aback in dealing with Amaranthine but nowhere the cluelessness of Merrill.

Velanna was slapping the ****** out of everyone and never tried to live in Amarantthine.

Because mind control is an aspect of blood magic she never wants anything to do with -- she calls the horrific uses of blood magic ghastly at least 3 times in the game -- so of course she's not going to realize how powerful that part of blood magic is?

She wants nothing to do with it. She never studied a part of blood magic she never wants to use and is never going to, because of how evil it is.

This is something that can be seen as either naivete or intelligence. Both are valid perspectives on it, but of course I'm going to lean towards the latter.

As for this, that wasn't being a fish out of water for Velanna. She was being a **** to her fellow Elves. Sure, what she was saying had some truth to it, but she wasn't showing any sense of compassion for them.

That's not inexperience. That's callousness.

The only thing she's shocked about is that humans could actually grow trees in a city.

fair enough. At least we both share one thought common - Merrill is indeed a "keeper"!

All I can say, is the more I play DA2, the more I like her. She doesn't like me though because I have played through the game twice so far and refused to let Hawke help her with the mirror. What I like about Merrill is that even though she gets angry with Hawke for not helping her, she still stays with Hawke and she always speaks pleasantly to Hawke and everyone else. I like bringing her and Isabela with me. Their conversations always make me laugh. Their personalites are so different, but they seem to get along really well.

hey all i actually enjoy rivalmancing Merrill (protecting her from herself/Keeping her actions from causing more problems) but cannot decide on whether to do so with my rogue or make a templar fHawke for it. any help?

you guys could come up with Dialogue of your own for Merrill. Mass effect fans do that right now.

^ this is what i am thinking:

Merrill: hawke does not know, but Sylvanwood can be used to make a Dalish Betrothal Ring.
Isabella: hahaha, i cannot believe Hawke gave you a wedding ring without knowing it.
Merrill: first off, this one was made for a keeper, second, it's a Dalish Betrothal Ring.
Isabella: Maker, Hawke is going to flip when she hears about this.

Ohai guise! It's been a while since I left a comment here. Ah, Merrill. Dat Welsh-- I mean, Dalish elf.

I hope she's in DA3, but most likely she's just gonna be relegated to a three minute cameo.

I heard that they showed a cool picture of Merrill at PAX while talking about companion armor.

I'd rather keep my happy imagination than have a hollow cameo.

If they can make agood meaningful cameo for her, then hell yes!

This.

Either give me Hawke and Merrill toegether BioWare, or dont give me either at all.

I'd much prefer to keep the two frolicking around in my imagination, than witness a poor cameo.

wow it's been a while guys beet caught up in ME3 and not all good but I'm glad to see there's still life in this place doing a full ME1-3 play at the mo. when that is done I'm thinking a DA play through is called for.

I just dropped in to say hello I hope all well. Just a quick question any new on DLC for DA2 at all or have they abandoned it now?

Alas, DA2 is dust on the wind. No griffins shall be tamed for Merrill, and she and Hawke will never frolic together again save for in the fields of our imagination.

hey guys, a question: have any of you romanced Merrill with one class of Hawke, and had this nagging feeling that you just should not do it, but on another class, you had no such feeling?

I just started a new DA2 playthrough. Just picked up Merrill, I really love her introduction, getting all flustered and not getting Hawke's jokes (something else she has in common with Liara). I wonder what new Merrill comments I'll discover this playthrough. It wasn't until my 3rd playthrough that I realised I could get non-rogues to try and unlock doors. Merrill's comments were my favourite:

Um, no. Definitely not. Ever!

I hope you're joking.

On the best day of my life I couldn't do that.

Its disappointing that there isn't going to be any more DA2 dlc. As others have said, if Merrill has a cameo in DA3 it might mess things up. But Hawke has a voice so I don't see that there's any reason she couldn't turn up briefly in DA3. That way they wouldn't have to be separated. What Hawke says could be dependent on if you played diplomatic, sarcastic or aggressive.

@draken-heart I can't say I ever really thought a specific class Hawke didn't suit Merrill. I've played DA2 as each class, sarcastic rogue romanced Merrill (friendship), aggressive mage romanced Isabela (friendship) and sarcastic warrior romanced Merrill (rivalry). My current Hawke is a mage who's going to romance Merrill. Going for friendship again because Hawke is a blood mage and because I'm not so fussed on the rivalry. I did like that Merrill chucks Hawke out of her house but Merrill is an adult, she can make her own decisions and Hawke should respect those decisions.

Sarcastic Tasha, even though i only had this feeling while i was trying to romance Izzy on my warrior, i could never romance Merrill on a mage, i always go to Isabella on mage hawke, and yet i can romance Merrill on a rogue Hawke, never izzy, i do not know why it happens like that.

Nope. I have however had the feeling that I can't romance anyone other then Merrill. For a few reasons:

1) Merrill is awesome.
2) I despise FemHawke's voice. I feel that her voice actress just... didn't put any emotion into her lines. Plus, I just don't like the voice itself.

I've only done one FemHawke playthrough, and I rivaled Anders in that one. Never again will I do that, because of how badly handled the Rivalry path was in regards to choices made previously (being pro-mage yet anti-Abomination still has him acting like you're pro-Templar).

I could probably bring myself to romance Isabela, but the thought of having a playthrough without romancing Merrill is very painful to me. Posted Image

Its funny, I can't play as ManHawke because of his voice. I'm a City Elf at heart so every time I hear his voice it reminds me of Bann Vaughan, very off putting. As for LadyHawke's voice, I love it, her posh accent works particularly well for the sarcastic dialogue. She always sounds really smug when she makes a joke and I like playing as a bit of an arse so her voice fits her personality for me.

I like rivalling Anders but yeah it is annoying that he assumes your pro-templar even if you got all your rivalry points in other ways. I liked the friendship/rivalry system but that is something that would need sorting for DA3. But I like antagonising Anders, killing him in the fade is especially fun, he gets so angry if you take the demons deal.

I only have one Hawke that didn't romance Merrill, she romanced Isabela instead but I felt like Merrill was her best friend as a fellow blood mage. She mostly used aggressive dialogue anyway and I prefer sarcastic with Merrill, I think it brings out more of Merrill's funny comments.

Something I've been pondering as I'm replaying DA2. I've noticed Merrill seems to have a specific comment for most of the different places e.g. the wounded coast, the docks, etc where as many of the other characters just make one of their random non-specific comments. Her wanting to go for a swim at the wounded coast is my favourite because I thought the exact same thing, I mean it looks lovely there, well apart from the bandits, Tal-Vashoth, demons, crazy mages and giant spiders. But other than that it looks like a nice place for a picnic.

So am I, but I don't hear Vaughan in Hawke's voice. Maybe it's because I favour diplomatic responses and DiploHawke lacks the arrogance and sheer hatred that Vaughan spoke with. While Boulton doesn't deliver every line the way I would, he hits it out of the park with his version of "Merill … it's all right."

That holds true for several companions — Anders and especially Varric seem to have something different to say for every major location in the game, both day and night. But Merrill has quite a few different location-specific lines.

I just noticed this last night and assumed she asked it no matter where she was. I admit I don't take Merrill with me very often (this will change in my next playthrough...) but I thought it was so cute. :pinched:

should i fell bad? i rival romanced Merrill, slept w/isabella, got a kiss from Aveline, and am going to get flirty, ending w/kiss (hopefully) from Tallis on my lesbian womanizer Rogue Hawke, Gwendolyn.
