Huh. This thread re-animated.
Does anyone like fanfiction? Does anyone like fanfiction with Merrill? Because I wrote a fluff story with Merrill in it. (Very mildly NSFW)

So here's the thing...
I'm starting a new mage play through, male, bad-ass, sourly aggressive/direct anti-hero type.
Oh yeah, he and Fenris will get along GREAT.
Anyway, the point is he's going totally bloodmage as part of his eventual build, and I thought it only appropriate he should be romancing Merrill.
Which will rather make Carver jealous.
Any thoughts or suggestions on the best / most fun way to play this?
Just throwing it out there. ![]()

That's a difficult question.
On the one hand, Rivalmancing her is trying to save her from herself and often has the more aggressive dialogue choices, which would probably be in character for your Hawke... but at the same time, it'd make you massive hypocrite when it comes to your condemning her use of blood magic, as a practising blood mage yourself.
And Friendmancing her is often the more diplomatic and kinder dialogue options, which seems a little too light and fluffy for the type of Hawke you're describing as wanting to play.
The romance path can go a ton of ways depending on how you choose to do it and you can easily rival her, yet help her fix the Eluvian at the same time. My tenative suggestion for an anti-hero blood mage is to go rival and save before each conversation with her, then experiment with the options to see what sounds most in-character for your Hawke.
Hope that helped! ![]()

Blood mage Hawke has to friend Merrill in my opinion. I played an aggressive, profit/power hungry, blood mage Hawke and she was best mates with Merrill. If you're pro blood magic and if you make deals with demons (my power hungry Hawke was always dealing with demons) you'll soon net loads of friendship points with Merrill. I also noticed that a lot of the time the aggressive dialogues don't really phase Merrill. But obviously some aggressive dialogues won't make sense to say.

Bad Ass Blood Mage Hawke does not "make deals" with demons, he forces them to give him what he wants and then kills them anyway to prove a point. ![]()
At any rate, thanks for the suggestions! ![]()

Okay, I am confused about Merrill's outfit... so in game it's got a green scarf.. if you romance her she changes to a full white outfit... where is this red scarfed outfit that I see in a lot of these videos?? Is that a fan-mod that even the devs use (as some of the videos are uploaded by Bioware staff), or what? *confused*
EDIT: Oh wait I guess it wasn't Bioware that uploaded the videos, it was just Mary quoting the person who uploaded the videos... so yeah seems to be some mod...

Ending is kinda sad if you don't romance her, Merrill sounded so disappointed when she talks about how things with Hawke never turned out like she wanted but cuts herself off before saying too much.
I stumbled across this dialogue earlier today actually. I was shocked that Merrill "knows" when she was almost romanced in the final goodbyes. I don't think anyone else has specific "friendzone dialogue" do they?

Does this happen when you flirt with her once, or can it happen if you don't flirt with her at all?

Near as I can figure it is specific to flirting with her. It seems like a reference to showing up at Hawke's house and getting the "You're like a sister to me Merrill" line.
But you also have to side with the templars to hear it. The Mages-Merrill last goodbye appears to be the same as her normal goodbye.
The normal Merrill-Templars last goodbye appears to be this: https://www.youtube....kuHGicg#t=5m41s
But the dialogue I got from her if I were to side with the templars with my Hawke who almost romanced her was "I guess I shouldn't be surprised that nothing turned out the way I'd hoped. Especially not... with you."
I also tested it against my non Merrill romance Hawke and all she said was "I'm... I'm sure it's for the best. I'm ready for... whatever comes."

I mean, isn't that what demons are good for? Heck they're friggin' demons. If you don't betray them now, they'll probably betray you later!

Why did she took 2 years to console Hawke?
is she mad?

Spoiler, it seems like Merrill would be a good fit for a companion going forward. I could also definitely see herSpoiler. Personally, I'd love to see more of her as a companion or ally. She'd be better than Vivienne, in any event
Honestly, I think Merrill would have been a better fit for Inquisition, where her story arc could have come to fruition and not died in the water. I felt like Merrill would have added to Inquisition's main storyline. Instead of the anti-Dalish, pro-Circle dialogue from Minaeve, Vivienne, and Iron Bull (re: merc Dalish) with no pro-Dalish counterpoint, we could have had Merrill provide that side of the Dalish: someone who talks about their best and their worst (without unnecessarily denigrating them simply to prop up the Chantry controlled Circles), who doesn't mention the elven gods simply to ask if there's enough room for the Maker, and who can provide a nuanced look at their cultural views and religion.
Someone who can also relate to Lavellan as another one of the People. Playing as a Dalish elf amidst all these Andrastians - none of whom really understand you, and never genuinely try to - felt pretty lonely and isolating. It made me realize how Merrill must have felt like, in an entire city that is dominated by Andrastian humans.
I could imagine the banter between Merrill and Solas about the People, spirits, and the Beyond, or how she might be one of the few people who would try to understand Cole.

Merrill might have been a fun addition, though she would suffer from "borrowed follower" in a similar fashion to Varric, but the fact that she can die in DA2 pretty much destroys her potential. I'm pretty sure Leliana and Anders used up BioWare's resurrection credit.

They could always say that Varric lied about her dying in DA2, that would be perfectly in-character for him, especially considering how much he likes Merrill. The entire framing device would justify it far better than Bioware did with Leliana and Anders.
And your idea is great, Lobsel, Merrill would have been a nice addition in Inquisition, if for no other reason to add some moral ambiguity back into blood magic again, and give us a likeable companion for a change. You're also totally right about how they dump on the Dalish too, them and the Grey Wardens. Not a fan of how they treat either.

I still dig her. I am still surprised they took a unimportant character from DAO (tag along ally for Dalish hero only) and became a supporting character in DA2. The only irk factor I have on her is that the cursed eluvian has messed with her head big time which made her timid and making her do some questionable stuff. In a way I see some similarities to her and Solas when it comes to spirits and demons where they both see positive things from spirits and demons while normal people would freak out. Also Merril seems to occasionly act like a child but frankly I like how she always acts toward my main character and how she is never afraid to don on a smile when things get tough.
I have romanced her with alot of my characters and she seems to be worth romancing since she always keeps my character smiling and doesn't make my character feel bad ever.

I like Merrill a lot, but i dont trust Bioware to bring her back in any way. I want to hear that Hawke was saved, and those two met up and lived together for the rest of their days.
They never just let people have happy endings, thats not what Bioware is about anymore.
Id love to see them treat her, and all the DA2 team, with respect, and do a "One last hurrah" mission to save Hawke. Id love to see some conclusions to each story that dont end with "Lost, and never heard from again."
Is it so hard to end a story with... anything other than "they died"?
