I'm playing my Dalish Warden again and I must say, it's always weird to see Origins Merril.

People complain about how Anders changed, but he still retained a little from his Awakening personality. He still jokes sometimes and the story does acknowledge that he's different from when he was more selfish and carefree.

But Merril did a full 180 there. That cold, stern demeanor she had in Origins... the two versions just have nothing in common.

Her crush on Mahariel was hinted at during the cutscene where he left with Duncan, but that's it.

 

Different writer.. Mary Kirby did something completely new..

 

I only wish my own Dalish Warden could voice weird naive opinions like she does. There's only like one: when I asked the Brother in Lothering if I should set myself on fire, if I want to be forgiven of sins. Sounds like something Merrill would say

I don't have it in me to do it on purpose anymore. Although I would, if there was some interesting consequence.

Nope. All you need to do is pick the "I take responsibility" option when the clan confronts you.

In the end she's still internally consistent with both ways.

 

It just takes some digging to find, but it is there.

Sometimes I'm not sure where the writers are going with Merril's portrayal.

She is supposed to be innocent and naive but she's also very sarcastic. Those don't go well together.

She's mostly sarcastic towards Sebastian. I think the idea is that Sebastian is such a goody goodnick that even Merrill takes the p*ss out of him.

Merrill: Mostly it stands in my house, looking a bit spooky.
Aveline: But its magic, right? So it can do... Magic things? Is it dangerous?
Merrill: It could fall on someone, but you'd have to push it really hard. It's quite heavy.
Aveline: Merrill, is it a danger to the people of Kirkwall or not?
Merrill: Oh! Only to anyone sitting right under it.

That's not sarcastic. That's delightfully innocent.

 

Now, when she describes her time in the Alienage to Master Ilen as "nothing but roses and rainbows," THAT is sarcastic.

That's a common mistake. To assume that Merril is a harmless puppy at all times just because she's Merril.

You should note that whenever her dialogue is meant to be a "something sails over her head" moment, one of the companions points it out or Merril realizes it herself. Otherwise, no, she knows exactly what she is saying.

Sarcasm doesn't need to have a sign with big letters like that alienage example.

Back to Aveline, how would Merril possibly not know what she was talking about? She's had countless arguments over the mirror's threat with Marethari before.

There are other moments like this, but then we'd be here all day.

Technically speaking, Merrill is right. At the moment Aveline asks the question, the mirror was still not working and couldn't do anything. So it was harmless (at that moment).

Nice pic, can see her tattoos even better. The eternal question, vallaslin is a face tattoo but are there actually more?

I've never seen any indication that vallaslin were more than face tattoos. But Y'know, artistic licence and all that.

There's also Legacy with a conversation with Carver and Merrill. He says something and she says something innocent, he reacts then stops himself mid-sentence, and goes "You're doing this on purpose!" and her response is to giggle.

It's in the lore itself and the codex that it's a sign of adulthood. One that can be denied if the Dalish show any signs of pain while it is being applied.

I'm not questioning what the Vallaslin are for (or what the Dalish think they're for). The question was, are they just face tattoos or do they go elsewhere on the body as well?
