As I understand it, any normal spell can be cast with blood, making it blood magic. There are also things that are blood magic specific.
Which begs the question of what's actually the difference between using blood and lyrium... all mages have mana, some restore/utilize it using lyrium and others using blood, if any spell can be cast with blood then why does it have some things that are nearly impossible to do with lyrium (read. entering the fade).... I hope we get to know more about Blood Magic in DA2, our knowledge of it is vague at best up till now.
The developers have said that the Veil isn't a barrier as much as a perception. The Fade isn't a separate world but exists alongside our own. Lyrium appears to be 'materialized Fade.' Perhaps blood is a source of mana because it's 'Fadized material.'
That is, like lyrium, its properties combine elements of both the Fade and material realm but unlike lyrium, it's based in the material, so native material beings can utilize it in ways they can't use lyrium.
Which begs the question: Are spirits able to use lyrium or blood for something? Or are there equivalent 'substances?'
For example, we know that where there's been a great deal of death, the Veil is thin. We know that spirits 'feed' off mortal emotions and concepts. From the Fade point of view, are concepts like little lyrium deposits? Nodes of power that sort of force their way from the mortal to the fade realms and can be tapped into?
Could we say that spirits draw power from and become addicted to concepts/emotions the way mages and templars draw power from and become addicted to lyrium?
