It really all depends on how you lay out your UV maps, doesn't it? Human faces don't drastically change the shape from DAO to DA2, which makes preserving the original layouts easy. They could change the layouts, granted, but they could just as well keep them the same, since they weren't exactly bad.Saberchic wrote...
I actually didn't think cutting and pasting would have been possible. I work with 3D graphics, and you can't just cut and paste a texture and have everything line up. There's a lot of work involved, and sometimes, it just doesn't work out. I'm by no means a pro, but I've tinkered around. I think Maria's explanation sounds quite plausible to me.
Well, since they had to redo them, why not make a few changes? The change doesn't irk me since they kept pretty close to the original design. I was never a big fan of some of those tats they had. I think Merrill's look better now.

This.. I usually ignore it but its weird seeing female characters that are pretty much supposed to be warriors be decked out in enough make up to paint a mural.

It's nice, but it doesn't look similar to Merrill's profile as far as I can see?? That looks like a classic tall, slim Tolkien elf profile.Eorion_Moonwing wrote...

Yeah I can see I'm in the minority. No Tolkien fans among you, for shame.
Looking at other video game elf monstrosities, it could have been worse. It does make me wonder what the new mage hats look like and if I might be able to stick one on her.
Hmmm...may I know whats your option on GamesWarkshop Warhammer elves? They are classic yet alien looking.
*snip*
Their design is my all time favorite so I was glad that redone DA2 elves got slightly similar body shapes.
I didn't like everything about Origins elves, mind you. tmp7704 up there became my favoritest person in the world when he made the proportions fixes that gave them toned arms, a little booty and smaller bust. In case no one knows what I'm talking about, compare Dalish chick's arms with the proportions fix versus the same PC at 1:16 of this video without the fix (I had to take it off due to clipping- also, video is NSFW). But now we hear that they're getting even scrawnier.

They will not look so small as Merrill now if DA2 elves are taller. I hope that D.G. were right and this shot is deceiving. To be slim and stretched is o.k. if you are tall enough in other cases you will look strange.Addai67 wrote...

Well, since they had to redo them, why not make a few changes?I mean, it's one thing to retouch some of existing designs or make new ones. But to make changes that'd render all existing assets unusable across the board when such changes aren't necessary? That'd strike me as quite pointless way to add yourself more workload, and that'd be especially bizzare for game with such short development cycle.
dude its not the same engine, the tattoos are not the same as origins, they recreated it to look similar. Whats the big deal here. The is not much a diff at all and its hard to say the new one is not better...

I can tell you that there certainly was effort to make anyone seen in Origins look similar in DA2. Sometimes it's not always possible to make them look exactly the same. And sometimes, thats even a good thing.
Hm...I see it. I mean, you guys changed the basic facial structure of the elves. I think you did a pretty good job to keep her looking somewhat similar. In any case, does this mean her eyes are still blue? They look hazel to me, but the lighting affects all the colors.
Out of curiousity, how close would you say you got the human characters to look similar to their past counterparts, if you kept the same face?

Here's the quote.
That is correct -- the elves are now super-slender -- though I would suggest getting a better look at her body (and her height) before making extrapolations. Not that this will stop people anyhow, but I'm simply suggesting that you realize you're operating on limited info there. This was not, after all, the "come see how Merrill and elves look" video.

Leaving aside for the most part it is the same engine, we're just discussing if the tattoos had to be redone because the old ones couldn't be reused, or if they were redone because the devs just didn't like the old ones. No, it's not a big deal but then nothing discussed on this forums is.Tiax Rules All wrote...

As for whether the new ones are better... horses for courses and all that. Personally, i find them equally uneappealing -- didn't really like any of the old designs (save for maybe one that was only accessible through the Toolset) and this new one seems just as "meh".

I think its both... they have to be redone, and in that process changes can be made. They changed it slightly to be more appealing in thier minds to the new Merrill while still keeping it similar to the original design
