So, I have Windows7 and grabbed a copy of NWN2 during the steam sale.

It installed just fine and I've been going through the tutorial.  Now I'm in chapter I, and for some reason... the game always crashes when Amie Fern gets hit by the lizard mage just past the bridge...  EVERY time.

My Video drivers are up to date
game should be completely patched due to steam install
no mods added

I don't know what else to do....  any help?

Post a crash log, in it's entirety. Crashlogs show up in your game install folder and have the name nwn2_errorlog.txt, each time you crash it summarizes it here.

You also can post this in the tech support forums ( almost in the same place as this but at the bottom ) and include your complete system specs. Win 7 does not tell us much, running dxdiag can help with this.

Other than that the NWN2 client extension fixes crashes it's author has developed a signature for. Note that this single person ( skywing ) is one of very few who can interpret a crash log, and if he can figure out why a crash happens, he puts a fix for it into the client extension, after that the client extension prevents the crash from ever happening much like antivirus software uses signatures to prevent viruses. It is something i can say fixes enough known issues that every single player should be using it, and it's last release allows it to support steam.

Give the folks who can respond a chance to actually respond, you are getting help from fellow fans and not employees paid to respond quickly. Those who do help have a lot of other things they are working on besides helping people in these forums.

The one who can really do something about it based on a crashlog is Skywing, who is the author of the client extension. I know zebranky and perhaps a few others can diagnose why the crash is happening as well. And both of them tend to not hang out in these forums too often, and will answer at their leisure.

I know if skywing looks at it, well every time i've shown him a crash log its been added to the client extension which permamently fixes the issue, and some of these are issues the developers could not figure out how to fix. However those fixes were not instantaneous, sometimes taking weeks or more to be developed.

Give those who know how to answer these questions a chance to review this at their leisure, i can take a day or two before they even notice a thread. And of course the folks who frequent tech support will have their own advice to offer, but it might take a while to get a good response.

OK, I've found a workaround. I deleted the saved-game it was based on and completely turned off the sound via the INI file.

At least I can play the game now...

Sound fixed it?

Already tried to update your sound drivers?

Some sound cards, especially soundblaster, seem to have issues with windows 7. I had to disable my soundcard and go back to onboard audio. Apparently some significant differences in how sound is handled in win7 which often requires hardware built specifically for win7 and not easily addressed with new drivers.

Well, not completely... it made it playable for a bit longer. I'm now stuck at some movies again. (Jerro haven end).

The problem is that my Video card is HDMI compliant, so my sound goes out through them. And yes, I keep looking for updated drivers, but can never get them.

So this video/sound card... you don't have a dedicated sound card somewhere in your system beyond that? Can't you use a BIOS related switch and make it run either through the onboard motherboard codec or go through a dedicated sound card? Maybe a BIOS flash update will cure it for using the video card with the HDMI output and sound ports?
