The ME universe is probably the greatest new scifi universe of recent time. Letting it end already would just be a missed opportunity.
However, I really really REALLY REALLY REALLY! F***ING hope that EA will not turn this into another Need for Speed or Call of Duty bullcrap, with a new game every other week, turning the franchise into cheap mass production (no pun intended). The short dev times of DA2 and ME3 (compared to the scope) are already very suspicous.
Anybody else kind of hoping ME3 is the end of Mass Effect...period?

Mass Effect is probably the most realistic and well-realized sci/fi setting ever committed to a video game. It certainly takes the cake in terms of coherency and internally consistent logic.
I want to see more of the series, but spinnoffs, not main-line games with sheperd, her story needs to be allowed to play out. Oftentimes when you have to hold back to allow the series to go on you short-change the emotional satisfaction of the climax.

Sure am glad you said 'committed to a video game' Wintermut. If you'd said something like 'ever devised' I'd have been forced to pull Farscape on you, given that it's the only series to ever be pulled off the air for having a plot that's TOO coherent.

I think ME3 should be the end of the Shepard vs Reapers story, but I agree they did WAY too much work on the setting and background to throw it all away. I'd love to see a "pen and paper" Mass Effect RPG (there isn't one yet, is there?)

This is an issue where both sides bring up very valid points. There have been many franchises who's first few sequels have been excellent, but then have become victims to the cash cow milking. This is usually more common in movies: Star Wars, Friday the 13th, etc. Anything with a bajillion sequels and or prequels. I'd rather have the ME trilogy die a peaceful death and be held in high regard in my memories, rather than continue endlessly and ruin the feel of the entire series for me. Though I doubt the latter, BioWare isn't that dumb.
BUT. Ending the ME universe completely with Shepard's storyline seems to be a bit foolish, and somewhat of a waste. It's not like it's a story in which everything revolves around a small group of people. This is an entire galaxy we're speaking of here, with tons of possibilities! Endless! It's not all about Shepard - why do you think some squad mates don't come back? They have a life. There's things to be explored in the ME universe; it doesn't need to revolve around the reapers.

Character spin-offs are welcome, Liara's adventures as the Shadow Broker, Wrex's campaigns to unite the Krogan and so on. There are enough ideas for years of great Bioware games.

Seeing how Mass Effect 2 has turned into a pile of ****, I hope ME3 is the end of this disaster.
I'm sensing Matrix 2 & 3 here.

In some way I agree with OP. Mass Effect isn't just sertain universe, but it's about characters in it. So, continue, would be like Have Star Wars, without Luke, Leia, Han solo and so on.. It's not just theme and world, but also the characters in it.
Of course there is allways possiblities, like son or daughter of Shepards. Like keeping the connection of the orginal characters.

That would make it ME Legacy and ME Expanded Universe like in Star Wars, I like those stories there and wouldn't mind that style in ME.Lumikki wrote...
