Title says it all. I always leave a squadie behind with him when I go to close the shutters, but does it in fact make a differance if you do or don't?

I believe all it does is drastically slow how fast his health meter drops during that segment.

Plus, it's just common courtesy. He's your friend! Though I don't like when Jacob says it's "not a good idea." This is why people don't like him.

You let Jacob out of the armory?

Pfft. I don't like him because he tells me he's not big on forcing these talks every time I ask him to pass me the salt at dinner.

like it when characters express their opinions about my decisions. I wanted moar.

Actually, the other person helps when Garm goes upstairs. They ARE actually fighting him up there. Jacob and Garrus almost destroyed him all on their own by the time I got there.

It buys you more time. Definitely leave someone back with him. Even on insanity you don't need both of them with you.

What annoys me is that they put him in the armory, so he's like your weapons geek, right?  So why doesn't he talk about that ever? I mean...

Grunt: he'll talk about being krogan, and not quite getting that, and then totally getting that.

Zaeed: more merc tales than you can shake a stick at.  And the stirring tale of Jessie's Last Kill.

Tali: she'll talk about the engines and being quarian.

Legion: he's like, the source of 90% of everything we currently know about the geth.

Garrus: at least had a token few lines about how the new Thanix cannons really kicked ass and stuff, and he'll talk about being Omega Batman and turian.

Miranda: she'll gab about Cerberus and the burdens of perfection.

Jack: she'll chat about being a total loon and a criminal.

Kasumi: plenty of "I stole this thing once..." and "Oh, here's how I stole that..."

Samara: happy to discuss being a Justicar and give you an asari viewpoint on things.

Thane:  We learn all about the drell and we also learn more about the hanar than we did in all of ME1.  Also, he'll talk about the assassination biz.

Mordin: C'mon,  It's Mordin

But Jacob? He was in the Alliance.  Apparently, it was bull**** and we already covered that.  And you can ask him how the crew is.  But, wait....why?  I don't want his opinion on that.  It's clearly not his job.  Jacob: why are you here dude? TELL ME! What the f*ck are you doing in here all the time?

I get the feeling he was supposed to be the one who had no ready gimmick or hook or label. Just Mr. Average Man with average talk - and most of his dialogue is an attempt at average talk. It just isn't done very well.

Insanity... I said sorry Garrus your on your own. It made little to no difference in my playthrough. (Insanity Level) I usually leave someone with him though.

But I suggest you try it out for yourself. Save point or something.

This run was the first time I'd left Jacob with him.  I usually pick up Mordin first and leave him there and take Zaeed with me (or vicky versa).  His comment didn't give me a warm fuzzy view of him.  This is Garrus we're talking about !!!  I'd leave the whole crew with him if I could ;-)

Interesting that some people don't leave anyone - is it possible for Garrus to die if you take too long with the doors?

Yeah, it only slows Garrus' death meter (or whatever it is). I always leave someone behind with Garrus, and that's usually Zaeed, since I take Jacob / Miranda with me to seal the doors.

You let Jacob out of the armory?

only to do his loyalty mission, which he seems unmoved by seeing that his father created a harem of drug addled women.

Heh. That one line right there is the main reason I DON'T let Jacob out of the armory, nor do I ever visit him there after I've asked about ship's upgrades.

There really needed to be a "Shut your frakkin' mouth and follow my orders" response to his opinion.

Jacob: This is not a good idea.
Shepard: It's an order. Follow it.
Jacob: Yes sir.
Shepard: You let anything happen to Garrus, and I'll reach down your throat and rip your balls off and feed them to a varren. Garrus!
Garrus: Yeah, Shepard?
Shepard: If you get overwhelmed, it's okay to leave him to die. I leave ripping his balls off and feeding them to a varren up to you.
Garrus: Well, then, take your time, Shepard.

(Only had Jacob along with me once, and that was because I did the Archangel recruitment before the Mordin recruitment on that play through; no, Jacob obviously does not impress me much)

I've heard that it does knock down the barriers of Garm a bit when you return, but I'm wondering if it matters who you leave. If I left (say) Jack, would the barriers be down as much as if I had left Miranda?

Maybe we should give the guy a bit more credit. He may be doing what so many of us players do: pretending that never actually happened because it was just too random and silly, and that we just went to some planet, found a pistol upgrade for no apparent reason, and then went home.

And why does Jacob say "it's not a good idea" anyway? OK, with Incendiary Ammo he can be useful for fighting Blood Pack down in the basement. But it doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Shepard: Hi Jacob, do you want some coffee?
Jacob: I'm not sure that's a good idea.
Shepard: Ah, no caffeine after 3? Whatever. How about some milk and warm chocolate chip cookies? Tali just made them.
Jacob: I'm not sure that's a good idea.
Shepard: Tali made them from scratch you... OK, fine. You up for a movie? I have a vid of the latest reboot of "Spiderman."
Jacob: I'm not sure that's a good idea.
Shepard: What is it with you?
Jacob: Already? I'm not big on forcing these talks, Shepard.
Shepard: !@#$*!#%!(@#

I usually start off with the Archangel mission, well after getting Mordin, so I only have Jacob and Miranda with me. I don't think I ever leave anyone with Garrus, his health stays high enough that I've never seen the need for that.

Jacob, well, he's a decent enough soldier but I never use him except for his loyalty mission or if I want to see dialogue with Ish.

I've only left him alone once, and that was an accident.  His life dropped dramatically while I was cleaning out the basement, even though I moved fairly quickly.

Tsk tsk. All these people wanting characters to shut their mouths.

Don't shut your mouths, characters. I beg of you. Challenge me, ask me questions, tell me what you think of my decisions, explain your opinion of my armor design, anything.

I did this once (and never will again) and took both teammates and deliberately dawdled to see if Garrus dies. He won't die during the shutter mission, you'll practically be able to kill any swarm of enemies and leisurely shut the doors, but hoo, does Garrus get snarky.

He can die when Garm goes after him. It takes awhile so there's no excuse to not reach them before that happens but if Garrus dies then it's mission failed.

What actually happens if Garrus' life reaches zero? Is he dead and you cannot recruit him or is there just a gerneral Game Over?

EDIT: Sorry... right above me
