Do people still play this game?

I've always loved to play DnD as the DM and with NWN, I understand that I can actually design my own dungeons and monsters.

However I'm assuming that doing so takes a large amount of time as well; especially with scripting and NPC design. I used to make maps for SC and WC3 and that was very time consuming.

I was just wondering if this game still has a large enough playerbase so that if I purchased it and made my dungeon, I won't be sitting in it alone as the DM.

if you're seriously interested in becoming a DM, I suggest getting in contact with some of the PW admins already out there. I gather it takes as much time to become a good DM as it would to design and fabricate a world-setting ..

as to how many people are still playing? well, recently I loaded the Multiplayer screen just to check out the gamespy and was surprised that there are servers out there with 50+ players

Yes people still play... who do you think keeps posting here if not those who are playing the game?

Beyond that, kevL's suggestion is pretty smart.

The amount of time and effort required to get something to the point where people will want to play it is significant, especially if you are starting from scratch.

If you really do want to go this route, my suggestion is to start with a solid base by using one of the prefab PW releases on NWVault and modify as you go that way.

It's a good question, though, in these particular forums, somewhat quizzical. Yes, it's a time sink, what past-time isn't? That said, get your sea-legs under yas and get familiar with the rough passages near the reefs and ye'll be fine, that's certain sure.

There is a larger pool of players than most realize. You won't be spinning yer wheels, lessen ye be a somewhat less than credible storyteller. There are prefabbed areas in the IGN Vault, there are others here who will be happy to provide tips, tricks and techniques to improve your work and speed it up a bit as well. This Community is like -- hmm -- like a couple of your favorite gaming groups that you used to play with who can sometimes help you track down problems, help come up with some ideas, twists and themes for when you're stuck and will answer most questions pretty promptly.

The rest really is up to you. In the strictest sense, "If you build it, they will come." So ante up before you sit at the table. And don't forget, the new guy brings the drinks and chips.

Yes, people still play it.

That being said, to build a new world from scratch is no easy task. And very time-consuming. With no guarantee that people will actually like it and play it.

It is a fact that there are popular servers out there, but there are many servers with population problems as well.

I would second (or rather third?) kevL's advice. If you like to DM, contact an already established server with some loyal player-base. It should be the shortest, least risky and least frustrating path to do what you like to do.

I remember that the original NWN used to have a website where DMs would organize a game time and invite players to join their game. Is there anything like that still going on?

The website and idea was very good. Their were some drawbacks, as you didn't know who you were playing with, but the few games I joined tended to be fairly enjoyable.

If you are interested in "the kinds of things you can do", check out this thread:

You may find another fit other just building/DMing (although those are my favorites).

@ MartialDoctor: That would be NWConnections. There is a link to it in the thread link above.

Welcome Vexorian! Hopefully after a look around here you'll buy the game & get playing. If you've played P&P, you should be in good stead for understanding the system pretty much straight away - you've just got the interface & AI to get to grips with & you're away (The pause button - space bar by default - is your friend here!).

As for what you can do - there's not much you can't do - besides the official campaign & expansions, there are hundreds of community made modules on the vault available for download - see the link in my sig for an example. I like remaking old 1st & 2nd edition AD&D mods myself, but there's a massive variety of mods out there - just run a search for a module & see what sort of search variables you can set. Then there's Persistent Worlds, and creating custom content for others to use, and a bunch of other stuff you'll see in different parts of the vault, all backed by the most helpful community I've known.

Jump aboard the wagon & join us...

Hey Clyordes,

Have a look at this thread:

Please feel free to point new players to it. It says basically what you said and then some. It is a sticky in this forum. :)

As far as the playbase goes, I won't lie - I don't think it's that big. If there are PWs out there wtih 50+ players on, though, that's not bad I guess. Either way, the community is still very much alive. There are a good number of people still playing and a fair few builders still going strong with this epic project or the other - in fact a lot of great campaigns have just been released quite recently.

Making your own such campaign does take a lot of time, though, especially if you're learning as you go. As suggested, it might be better to DM on a PW or something, though I wouldn't really know about that.

Whatever the case, though, there's nothing out there that offers quite what NWN2 does, and not a lot on it's way for at least a while yet, from what we've seen. So, there will be people playing and building for a long time yet, even if there aren't that many of them. I mean, hell, look at BG, and that doesn't even have ANY dedicated modding software, let alone the plethora of cool features NWN2 has.

My first module took me 6 months to make. I started with zero understanding of the toolset, scripting, or even creating adventures. In 4 months, there have been just over 1,000 downloads. This is pretty much average for the other modules released about the same time. I feel like there are enough people playing to keep me building. Right now, as far as I know, NWN2 is pretty much the premier D&D CRPG, keeping in mind that NWN1 is also excellent.

If you are unsure, just start out with a little short adventure. A few quests, 1-4 hours of playtime and see what you think. Best of luck!

Yeah...sheesh Banshe...you make all us other folk look bad.  Nice job.
I echo the idea that you start small if you are going to build.  It took me a while to transition over to NWN2 from the NWN community and I can tell you I would not go back to NWN building.  If you take a simple adventure and build it with no custom content, you could be done with a mod fairly quickly.  If you use prefabs available on the vault, you could speed up the process.

Thanks Mokah. :)

I guess I decided it was a little absurd to always have people showing up here and then leaving after playing the OC etc. having no idea about all the rest NWN2 has to offer.
