WHAT?! An American accent on a human from a country based on England. If you want American accents, go watch a dumb mainstream film. I could understand if they gave an English accent to a City Elf or a Dwarf, but not a Fereldan human. How could you moan about such a cool accent. Just be glad Bioware didn't give Hawke a regional English accent. When Susan Boyle went on American TV, they subtitled her when her Scottish accent isn't even that strong. I can't understand most accents, but I can understand hers. If they gave Hawke a scouse or a geordie accent , most Americans probably won't understand them.

I have taken serious offence to this, by the way. (In case you haven't noticed)

Being half Geordie I would have loved BioWare for giving Hawke a Geordie accent Image IPB Image IPBtheres not enouth Geordies out there. But I did feel a bit sorry for the Scotts that day with Susan Boyle, whats wrong with the accents from the rest of the British isles?
I know Sebastian has a Scottish accent, and the Dalish Elves now have Welsh accents, but there are a heck of a lot more British accents then neutral English, Scottish, Welsh and London's cockney accents....but em lets not derail the thread more then it has been yea......

As an English man I have to point that Hawkes accents sounds bad really bad, of course that to be expected in a fantasy game or anything fantasy where just about every one talks like they come from southern England, DA1 is a prime example of this where accent ranged from London posh to

cockney with a bit of essex tossed in for good measure.

Now if Hawke sounded like he came from Edinburgh or Belfast or hell even Cardiff that would be great cos I am so tired of English or American accents in fantasy games!!

Phew rant over, keep up the good work Bioware!

That voice has to be a placeholder. I can't believe BioWare would cast someone so flat and amateurish sounding as a main character...

Hawke sounds like a guy from Ferelden, as he should.

Yes, this. And with the elves having their voices redone, I don't think anyone will have a "neutral American accent" anymore... except dwarves?

City Elves

He sounds posh way to posh for a penniless commoner which is how they described him. I was hoping for an Irish accent. Or Scottish. In every game that's based in a UK/Ireland analog they forget about Irish and Scottish accents and everyone has Welsh or British accents. British accents that all come from one area of Britain.

Ferelden is based on England, not the United Kingdom, Ireland or Scotland. And his mother is of noble lineage, so while he might live the life of a commoner, his roots are anything but.

I think giving Hawke an American accent would have been a tragic cliché,personally.
While I don't like what I've heard of M!Hawke's acting,it's nice to see an authentic English accent instead of a poorly impersonated one like in so many crappy movies I've seen. (And I myself am English,so I'm biased.) Image IPB

An American accent in a medieval fantasy setting would be cliche? In what world?

Anyhow, I prefer the English accent myself, as it's consistent with his Fereldan heritage, and I rather like his VO. Not what I expected in sounding as generic as possible, so I like it.

I wish it had been more Irish :(

But why would it be? The Fereldens in Dragon Age: Origins all spoke in an English accent and the majority of them had English voice actors. Loghain, Anora, Alistair (despite his VA being Scottish), Flemeth... Duncan didn't, but he wasn't from Ferelden (I believe he was Rivani?), which makes me wonder why Isabela still has hers, since she's from Rivain and not Ferelden...

Duncan has Rivanian ancestry, but he grew up as an Orlesion in Orlais

His accent isn't thick it's bad and I mean Stave Valantine bad, but it could be worse it could be a bad cockney accent that ends up sounding Australian which happens way too much in gaming

I've got no beef with the accent per se, it's the voice itself that pisses me off.

Completely destroys the image I had of Hawke.

What do you guys think of Hawke's accent? I hoped they'd gone with more of a neutral sounding American accent, instead of a heavy British accent (I think). I really really dislike Hawke's voice.

Did you not notice that all the humans in DAO had English accents (received pronunciation, even - I mean, not Kirstie Allsop RP, but RP enough)?

Suddenly giving Hawke an American accent would have badly broken continuity.

I must say, if you thought Steve Valentine did a bad job with Alistair then your standards for voice acting are absurdly high.
