The one rule here: Empty your override file. Look in "My Documents/Neverwinter Nights 2" to find your override folder.

The first step is to install the game and any expansions you may have. Then update.

The latest version of the game is 1.23. The easy way to update is to simply press the "Update" button in the Main Menu.

If that does not work, you need to go the manual update route. That can involve downloading a sequence of patches and applying the patches to your game install using the NWN2 patcher:

http://nwvault.ign.c...ls.Detail&id=12

You can find most of the patches here:

These are sorted by language: http://nwvault.ign.c...s.Detail&id=230

Some of the patches are missing from the above link. Check here for more patches:

http://nwvault.ign.c...er.Detail&id=19

Breakdown of the file names:

Depending on what type of game you have installed (the language version, which games), you will be using different patches.

For instance:

nwn2_pcx1_english_from1121295_to1131407.zip

nwn2 = the game
pc = You only have the Offiicial Game installed. No expansions
pcx1 = You have expansion number one (Mask of the Betrayer) installed. But not expansion two installed.
pcx2 = You have expansion number two (Storm of Zehir) installed. It doesn't matter whether or not you have expansion one installed.
english = The language version of your game.
From1121295 = This is the starting version of the patch.
To1131407 = This is the ending version of the patch.

For "From" to "To" (see above), you need to connect all the points together.

As an example, I am going to list all the files that I need to patch the game. I have the OC, MotB and SoZ installed and version is English. The version number when I have all this installed is: 1.20.1541

So to get from version 1.20.1541 to version 1.23.1765, I need to download and install these (notice that they a numerically sequential):

nwn2_pcx2_englishvofix_from1201541_to1201541.zip
nwn2_pcx2_english_from1201541_to1211549.zip
nwn2_pcx2_english_from1211549_to1221586.zip
nwn2_pcx2_english_from1221586_to1221587.zip
nwn2_pcx2_english_from1221587_to1221588.zip
nwn2_pcx2_english_from1221588_to1231763.zip
nwn2_pcx2_english_from1231763_to1231765.zip

So I would download all those patches (note: I had to go to both pages to get those files) and the patcher (link near the top) to patch the game.

I believe that the links are broken for these two files on the vvault page so use these instead (if you need them):

nwn2_pcx1_english_from1211549_to1221586.zip

This link is also found above: nwn2_pcx2_english_from1211549_to1221586.zip

Please post any question or links to more missing files here (for any language version). Thanks.

The above instructions are for the Windows version of NWN2 only. The Macintosh version does not have an update feature and the Mac patches are not in the same location as the Windows patches.

For Mac users, the final patch to 1.23.1765 is located at the Aspyr website here or at Softpedia.com here (click on the Download From Softpedia button). If you purchased the Mac App Store version while it was available then you are already at the current patch level.

Additional information on patching Mac NWN2 can be found at the NWN2 Mac Free Forum site. I have a number of NWN2 Mac related posts on my blog.

Regards

If you purchased NWN2 via Steam, you are patched up to date.

OK so now I have the seven zip files that you say to download, and I unzip them and have 7 files that end with RTP. So now what do I do?

Cygnus, you could have placed the .zip files in your main NWN2 directory (the one that starts: C:\\Program Files \\Atari \\Neverwinter Nights 2\\ )
And then pressed Update and it should have automatically updated them for you. The updater will read the files and install them correctly. Even so, unzipped to rtp, you can (or should if I recall correctly) do the same thing. Just place those files in your main NWN2 directory and press update. As I presume this is because you cannot download and update online, I recommend that pressing Update should be preceded by taking your computer temporarily offline. The update process first looks for an internet connection. If it doesn't find it, it might call a warning, but then it should automatically start looking for necessary files to update with in the main directory.

If the .rtp files don't work for you *(and you didn't download tnt220's manual updater file) then simply place the .zip files in there and see what happens. I am a bit rusty at how all that works, but I believe if you read the opening pages of this thread, there is a link to my super all encompassing "How To Manually Update" post somewhere. (It's really not that hard to do, but a lot of folks are stumped by the auto updater and so do not get the whole manual updater thing.)

I used to have to manually update by taking a portable and thumb drive to my local library (13 miles from my house in the sticks,) download the files from the IGN Vault, then transfer them to the thumb drive, take all home, then use the thumb drive in the main computer, transfer the files to my gaming rig, then perform the manual update. It's a lot of hassle, but worth it (at the time) to get my necessary updates.

After all, being a moderator and "champion" of the game, it would hardly do for me to be 'behind' the update curve compared to all those whom I attempt to provide assistance.

If you have any further questions please feel free to ask them here and/or PM me.

Reread the first post. :)

You should make sure they are the right patches (by reading the first post). You should also grab the installer (link in the first post). There should be a readme there to explain how to install the patches using the patch installer. Going from memory, I believe you start the installer, load all the patches into it (in sequential order) and then click the "patch" or "install" button.

Here is the readme from the NWN2 Patcher page:

NWN2Patcher by tnt220
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

This patcher will let you patch you NWN2 completely offline as
long as you have downloaded one or more of the patches beforehand.

Offline patches are hosted by NWVault at this URL:
http://nwvault.ign.c...s.Detail&id=230

How to use
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Make sure that NWN2 is not running before proceeding...

Download one of the patches normally used with the built in
nwupdate.exe usually called something like
nwn2_pc_english_from100788_to102809.zip

Unzip the file into the nwn2 installation directory, the above
shown file will likely contain a file called
nwn2_pc_english_from100788_to102809.rtp . I would advice to place
the .rtp file in the nwn2 installation directory, but have managed
to patch my NWN2 with the .rtp file located elsewhere.

As with the nwupdate.exe you will still need up to 6GB (or more)
of free space to patch, but should with this patcher be able to
choose where to take it from (and not just the drive where NWN2 is
installed as nwupdate does). Version 2.17 and forward on
NWN2Patcher will, if applying one patch at a time tell you
approximately how much temp space is needed for a given patch.

Select a patch file and optional temp directory with lots of free
space, 6 GB or more is required for the larger patches (the
program defaults to the root of the drive with the most free
space) and then press Patch to start patching.

With version 2.15 another patching option has been added making it
possible to apply several patches in one go by queuing them. To
use this feature press the Queue button and add patches to the
queue (Be carefull to add them in the correct order or you may
harm your installation). Once you have added patches to the queue
press the close button and press the Patch button to start
patching from the queue.

If a CRC error or out of space error is encountered when using
queued patching, the patch engine will as with normal patching
roll back to latest successfully applied patch.

When using the queue option it is not possible to use the ignore
missing files, verify only or undo patch options. This is
naturally because ignored ignored bad files should not be taken
lightly. As for the Verify only option... Since it does not write
files to disk and patches often add new files, patching of those
not written files by a later patch is deemed to fail.

A new feature in version 2.25 is the undo patch feature which is
available when applying a single patch (not using queued
patching). The undo patch feature will let you choose a directory
where the patcher will create a "undo_fromxxx_toXXX" (X being
version numbers) subdirectory into which the files modified by the
selected patch will be copied prior to patching your installation.
Additionally NWN2Patcher will create an undo_patch.bat file which
when executed will first delete any new files added byt the patch
and the copy back the affected files before finally set the
version in your windows registry to the one it was prior to
patching.

NOTE that the backup taken by the undo patch feature is not
compressed, and can take up several GB of space. It will tell you
how much space is needed before backing up. When using the undo
patch feature the copying of files to backup before patching may
also take some time.

NOTE also that any savegames made while the patch to be undone was
applied may or may not be corrupt after undoing the patch. This is
due to the way the savegames are structured, so the safest would
be to revert to an earlier savegame.

Running undo_patch.bat while nwn2 is running will fail, shutting
nwn2 down and rerunning undo_patch.bat should work.

It may take some time to apply the patch(es) depending on your
system, but you can follow the progress on the progress indicators
and will also be notified upon success or failure by a messagebox.
The file progress indicator might seem to be at 100% for a long
time with some files (usually the large ones), this I believe is
caused by the overhead time used to write the patched file to the
harddisk before starting on the next file.

If you reapply a patch, the file progress indicator will only
change when a file is actually modified. The total progress
indicator will count normally.

If you wish to verify that you can patch without getting CRC
errors simply check the "Validate install only" checkbox and a
quick simulated patch will happen listing any errors. Note that
real patching will perform rollback if errors happen so this
feature is merely for those wanting to quickly check the state of
their installation. Temp space for patching will NOT be verified
as it depends on the patch,.

From version 2.10 it is possible to force the patch engine to
ignore files that are missing or the patchengine believes are
incorrect. This was implemented to allow those who modify the
original campaign (or otherwise customise the original NWN2 files)
to update their game. This MUST be used with caution as it can
cause unforseen results (reinstalling game, ruining savegames
etc.) When/if using this option please check the listbox to verify
that only the files you had modified were bypassed.

After having used the Ignore files option you should NOT contact
Obsidian support for help with any problems with the game or
savegames from a game where the "Ignore Files" option was used.

NOTE:
¯¯¯¯¯
If you get crc errors with nwupdate.exe, my patch program is
likely to fail also.

DISCLAIMER:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
You MUST KNOW which version of NWN2 you have and use the correct
patch file for your version of NWN2 (you can see it in
the launch window of NWN2 and also when my patcher starts). You
should choose an .rtp file where the number after from in the .rtp
filename matches your version (ignore the . when comparing i.e.
100788 equals 1.00.788).

Patching with the wrong RTP file may damage your NNW2 installation
and a reinstall could be required.

I am NOT responsible if you have to reinstall NWN2 after using
this (I always update my NWN2 with this utility and had no
problems with it)

In case of error check the listbox for more specific error
messages. I however cannot help you with errors reported in the
listbox as they originate directly from the patchw32.dll file.

Ah yes, my fault for not reading more closely the beginning of the first post. I believe I have the correct patch files because after installing the platinum edition I am at 1.20.1541 just like in your example so I downloaded the patch files you showed.

What is the purpose of nwn2_pcx2_englishvofix_from1201541_to1201541.zip?

Apparently, there is a part of the installation/patching process that accidentally deletes the vo (voice over) NWN2 files. So this restores it to your game installation. It is possible to find this file at a certain point, make a copy of it and return it to your game installation at a later point. But unless you have bandwidth issues, the above outlined method is more straightforward. ;)

1.23 is the latest. There is unlikely to be any more official patches, as there is a lawsuit over the DnD license.

In the toolset. 1.23.1765 is the latest.

The version on Steam comes completely up to date and needs no patches.

One more extremely important guideline I found for correct installation of the patches, especially using the autopatcher when your internet security is probably active.

Virus protection can corrupt the patch installs. Switch it off (no prob if you're manually patching as you can do that part offline).

Hello there Banshe, thanks for your instructions, but I am very new to NWN2. I just installed my game and was wondering if I could request specific help on this topic of patches.

Here's what I did so far, in order :-

1) Installed NWN2 Official Campaign, Installed Mask, Installed Storm of Zehir
2) Patched Official using Online Updater to 1.23.1765
3) Installed Mysteries of Westgate
4) Started the Updater again to reconfirm (after installing Mysteries), but it says everything has been done.
5) Launched Official, Mask, Storm, Mysteries OK; all 4 can be played.

But I noticed only my core engine is patched to 1.23.1765, what I am actually concerned with is whether there are any individual, specific patches for the expansion/adventure pack materials I need to install as well, ie. is there any other step in patching I need to do now (concerning expansions/adventure pack).

Thanks in advance.

PS. I am only concerned with official materials, patches, and I intend to play everything vanilla; no third-party custom content even fixes.
