I prefer 'default' to canon or iconic. We also know that for DA II, the default is that the Dark Ritual happened while Alistair and Anora ruled Ferelden, but that doesn't mean it's the canon story.
Uh no. We get a choice of defaults

Dragon Age: Origins - Default Warden : Human Male Warrior. From the Games importance on this Origin over others and the Trailers that showed off Default Warden as a Human Male Warrior.
Also, there were default choices for Origins which Awakening let on. Here are some of them...
- Aliaster is King.
- Warden is either Dead or Vanished.
- Morrigan ran off and bore a child.
From what we've seen thusfar...
Dragon Age 2 - Default Hawke: Human Male Mage
I fully expect the Default Hero for Dragon Age 3 to be...
Dragon Age 3 - Default Hero: Human Male Rogue

There's no "default" Hawke. There's marketing Hawke though.

Look at Shepard. In every trailer he's in he's a Human Male Soldier. No surprise that most Shepards ended up being Soldiers, huh?

Mage is probably the most involving. As non mage you still have your sister to protect, but it is not the same. If you are apostate mage yourself you cannot side with templars, while if you were just the brother of an apostate you probably could. In theory.
Wouldn't that mean that playing non-mage would give you a greater range of choice in the game, hypothetically speakng, since you would not be forced to oppose the Templars?

Yes. Being Apostate probably wouldn't give you alot of choices. I'll play warrior in my first anyway, since I always do that. Having less choices is not necessarily a bad thing though.

There's a default Hawke appearance, but I don't think any of the classes are default.

I'm more worried about how mage clothes will look. Considering hawke isnt a circle mage, him dressing around in robes would seem a bit odd

Canon Hawke ( ... if there is such a thing ) is quite obviously a blood mage. You need to look no further than the destiny trailer to discern that. If that isn't enough take a quick glance at his family tree.
Where is his family tree?
And yeah so I figured too, which is why I asked to really be sure.
And to the poster above me, you can't be a melee mage <.<; You just get a melee animation when the enemy is in your face, the dmg you do is still the same as if your staff just shot at them.

Where is his family tree?
Leandra Amell his mother who's family has produced mages before. She may be a mage herself, but this probably isn't so
Hawke's father who was a mage. sry I can't find his name. I don't think its been released yet.
Bethany who is a mage.
Carver who is not a mage, but seeing as he comes from a family where magic runs strong, can and probably will produce mage children if he were to settle down with some one.
The Warden if you played a mage- They are cousins
Morrigan if you romanced her and performed the DR.... Well kinda. She would be considered a cousin through marriage, though she would never marry, but I would consider her family if I were Hawke. Even though its extended family.
The Warden and Morrigan's son. And if I had to guess he will be a mage.
And last but not least Flemeth who is of course a mage. Again not a blood relation but you know what I mean.
