Ugh, the polls and comments are depressing. I guess it is true, slap a bunch of flash and graphics on a shooter, add a few RPG elements, and screw the story. People won't care.

ME1 was better.

I liked ME1 better than ME2. For all the improved gameplay, all the streamlining made it feel like BioWare took out a part of the game's soul - namely the good story and a protagonist that really mattered to the plot.

ME2 for its sheer replayability. I find that starting a new Shepard in ME1 is very frustrating early on. Especially if you are a soldier. Assault rifles early on are worthless. Fighting Krogan with wet rags would be better than the junk that you get early on. Plus the inventory system makes me want to puke.

Ive played ME2 six times, and Im right now working on my 3rd ME1 playthrough with my 2nd Shepard (for my 2nd playthrough I just imported my previous ME1 save so I wouldnt have to surffer and go through the process of getting half decent weapons.

I think ME1 is better than ME2 because it keeps the "space opera", it's..i don't know, deeper.
Still, it has A LOT of bugs, gameplay sucks compared to ME2 but still,it has that something, maybe the soundtrack...don't know.
ME2 changed the scheme that ME1 created.
I dont know...maybe because i am an amateur astronomer i like it more
but dont misunderstand me, ME2 is awesome, I love Mass Effect, all of them.

I would love to read your opinions.
Regards.

Oh shut up with all these "which is better" threads me1 and me2 are both fantastic games in their own way.

I'm tired of seeing these threads...

Both were really good games for different reasons, IMO. The only reason I dare to say that ME1 edges ahead of ME2 slightly is because it was the first game and the sense of wonder you got from playing for the first time was pretty awesome.

No, Mass Effect 2 is better than the first in every way.

Only ****gots suffering from extreme butt lacerations think otherwise.

ME2 > ME1 in every possible aspect except for direct story telling. I'm not including the character stories in that pool, because those were all exceptional. The plot however, was a tad cliche and a little transitional, but thats okay, because ME3 is going to rock our worlds.

The only reason ME2 was so successful was because it was the sequel to a great game. If ME2 had been a separate story with separate charaters in a separate universe and just the game mechanics everyone would have just called it a mediocre RPG/TPS hybrid.

All ME1 needed was tweaking. Yes the inventory system sucked, but that doesn't mean you have to throw the whole thing out. Yes the combat system was glitchy and left for much improvement, but that doesn't mean that you have to base everything around the newly revamped combat system in the second one. We liked ME1 because it was an RPG and then they make RPG/TPS hybrid, taking away a lot the RPG feel to it? WTF? Remember Baldur's gate? Great game but a little rough around the edges. Then we got Baldur's Gate 2, which was the first game but with better graphics, more to do, more RPG features, bigger world, and a lot what made the first one annoying fixed. What happened with ME? It's hilarious that when you read the threads about what people want for the third game, most of the time, they're asking for features that were in the first one. Doesn't that strike anyone else as strange?

I was watching a friend of mine play through ME1 and I found myself shaking my head saying to myself, "This is such a better game than ME2".

I fully agree with the quote above.

A lot of this debate has to center on the question,  "What type of game do you like?" Fans of Third Person Shooters and RPG fans are two different groups with different preferences. RPGers love all of the little details, story-lines, and customizations. They are also more patient so they can put up with lame stuff like the Mako or Mining if they see the goal ahead.  TPS love the action, and are more concerned with maximizing fun and minimizing B.S.
As someone who is more of a TPS fan I loved Mass Effect 2.  The RPG elements weren't intimidating or overbearing, it was a game that was fun and I enjoyed the character development I had.  I also enjoyed ME1, but If I'd played it first, the Mako, and the horrible menu systems would have been enough to turn me off to ME2.  I could see why RPG fans would like ME1 better, but I'll take ME2 everyday.

Me1 is by far the clear winner. Ive played through it countless times, haven't managed to go through me2 even twice. Me2 feels so staged and packaged. Go to the ship, do a ship members personal quest, rinse and repeat until the end. I didn't even feel like it had a story. Not to mention a lame inventory system, a dumbed down and lame attribute system and just a general dumbing down. Me2 wins in presentation only which I feel wins over way more people then it should. Any true longtime rpg fan will tell you Me1 is by far the greater rpg.

I'll see that and raise. I'm replaying ME1 right now, and I'm amazed at how much worse it is than ME2. Not just the combat and inventory systems, which I expected to stuck. Lots of little things are the surprise, like badly arranged and clunky dialogue trees.

Dude, I feel you man.  ME1 is rough a hell in some areas.  ME2 did some to correct and polish on ME1, but my problem is that they flat out changed some much stuff in it.  ME1 is rough looking/playing game that is awesome at it core and concepts.  ME2 is a mediocre game with a lot of polish on the superficial parts but nothing much with things that really matter in an RPG. In my opnion at least.

Saying that there was an inventory system in ME2 is a bit of a stretch isn't it?

Nope. I remember reading a while back that they had spent a lot of time developing me2 so that it could be beaten as a shooter, without any biotics or abilities. It shows. As a result all the classes feel the same, talent points are pointless and it is really just a jazzed up shooter with a few half-assed rpg elements tacked on to attempt to appease the fans from the original.
Deux ex was a great game, better then halo even.

ME2's writing was done better, as was the pacing and gameplay. It really depends on whether you prefer RPG elements over shooter elements, as the latter was more dominant in ME2 than it was for ME1. It will be interesting to see if Bioware continues down this FPS road to further mesh that gameplay with RPG elements. In some ways, since games are always bluring lines between genres, ME2 is ahead of its time for how well it blended FPS with RPG. In the meantime, though, people who loved the RPG ME1 was, they're dissatisfied with ME2.

You are comparing ME1 and ME2 and complain that the classes felt unoriginal and the same in the second? :wizard:

I don't know what you think of the second's inventory. Saying that it was absent is irresponsible.

what?
They all feel the same, within me2.
In the original my adept couldn't wield a rocket launcher.
