Engineers and Infiltrators are my two favorite classes. So much great active powers with excellent CC on the engineer.

I stick to AI hacking 1, in the rare occasions where they start to wander someplace inconvenient I can just shoot em because they don't have any shields.

My first playthrough I ran an engie. I didn't know it was cool to hate AI hacking, so it became my primary skill on missions with synth enemies. Improved AI hacking on the right enemy is just unfair to the poor dumb geth. Improved AI hacking + Improved Combat Drone meant never taking fire. Adding Legion and Tali to your team makes synthetic fights easier than your mom.

I do love Engineers, just not on the DCS mission, har har har.
I redact this statement. I love Engineers, period. All I did was pick a different weapon to see if the platforms didn't suck so much (Viper instead of Mattock) and it was a BREEZE. I love the Viper on the Engineer. I don't even mind the scope-to-cast that much. Must be my play-style, I suppose.

Thanks for the tips, Bozorgmehr. I have experienced the same frustrations as sinosleep with AI Hacking, and had concluded it was an awful skill. I'll try it out some more on my next playthrough. I don't know if I'll be able to marry it to my playstyle effectively, but it could be fun to shake things up a bit.
I never really tried AI Hacking before playing Engineer, but it's become one of my favorite powers.
You don't have to use AI Hacking yourself, Tali and Legion are excellent to insta-hack enemies. Bring another squadmate with the proper defense stripping powers (anti-armor for LOKI & FENRIS; Overload for Geth) and you're set. The instant enemies appear, search for the best positioned target, hit both squad buttons and target is hacked.
Enemies always attack nearest (visible) target (except drones, they only distract one enemy). Hacking a LOKI who's walking in the middle of a group of enemies, will draw all aggro, i.e. all enemies within that group will attack hacked LOKI (that's why you need to invest points in AI Hacking, to make its effect last long and to add strong enough shield to allow target to remain hacked for the full duration).
Here's another example: Enemies are in a well fortified position and they've sent a LOKI to get to Shep's position. If you hack that LOKI it will be closer to enemy position than Shepard > You won't take any fire, the LOKI will soak up all damage and you can re-hack it whenever its shield goes down. Shepard can simply follow in LOKI's footsteps without any danger and (s)he can take out enemies at will. I call this the LOKI MEAT SHIELD TACTIC

the engineer is the true caster class in ME2. i havent played it at all, but im fairly certain itd be alot more fun if i had more mappable buttons on my controller, with having all those debuffs and what not.

Engineer comes at a close second for me (behind Infiltrator). Sometimes I like to use what I call - a Pyro-Tech Demolisher, where I have: explosive drone, heavy inferno grenade, incineration blast, a flamethrower or grenade launcher, and a squadmate with squad incendiary (usually Grunt), coupled with the Schmiter. Loads of fun no doubt, but kinda tricky on insanity. AI missions are all about Area Overload, Area AI Hack, Area Drain, Tali or Legion, and Zaeed's Squad Disrupter. Honestly, there's so much you can do/experiment/invest in with the Engineer, I won't even bother to go on. The CC's off the charts.

I use my engineer for shield/armour stripping and drones. My bonus power is Geth Shields. I liked hacking in ME1 but since it only works on naked synthetics in ME2 I don't bother with it.

Drones are dead useful. On Insanity, I can't get through the Grunt recruit or the Samara recruit without drones. So Tali and me always have Chiktikka and Theis to battle for us.

Then you're missing a whole lot of fun - AI Hacking is awesome, especially on Insanity!
