Ya see that doesnt actually look like an announcement to me.
That looks like a fan thread like a kajillion of other fan threads basically asking for such and such to be a companion in DA2 - Nathaniel, Anders, etc etc.
Nowhere does anyone actually say in that thead that Merrill is a companion, or an LI; she isnt on the main, and I cant see any Bioware announcements to that effect anywhere else on this bioware sites.
They talk about her as a character in the game that has a relatively large part - a major chracter. But she could just be an NPC for all it appears - to me at least.
And as much you might respect Maria Caliban - and as much as he/she might wish it - he/she isnt a Bioware Employee and a fanthread created by that person doesnt actually count as an announcement.
And David Gaider mentions something about this all being speculation in that thread.
So thats what I am taking that as. Pure speculation.

Until I see something official and definitive I am still going to err on the side of caution on this one. That way I save myself dissapointment if all the hype about "omg super cute merrill" ends up meaning nothing, because of her potentially being a plot device or quest giver.
