You could basically subvert any stereotype you wanted to.

You can rarely make them cowards, which is my general go to trope of amusing heroics.

Ah, yes. Well, beyond than, I'd say there are decent possibilities for roleplaying a subverted stereotype!

I liked my old-ass (complexion all the way up) warrior wielding two-handed weapons, while being extremely intimidating and no-nonsense in dialogue. Hell, he even had white hair!

Telling Alistair to shut up constantly, just added so much value to it. Because it was coming from this wise old sage-looking character.

Well, I will play a game as either really, but given the option I'd prefer to play as a female.  I love my female characters but that doesn't stop me from playing games that only feature a male character.  Unfortunately, we must take what we can get when we can get it sometimes, but for a company like Bioware that has had such a long standing history of allowing players the option, I would be extremely upset if they suddenly did make a game that forced me into either role.

Giving people the option can really only help an RPG.  For an action/adventure game, it may not help as much (I can't imagine playing BG&E without Jade for instance) as long as the main character is not being formed by player choices.  When a game follows a preset path without player choices, the game is more like an interactive movie, whereas most RPGs that allow choices are more founded on the growth of the main character, and thus allowing varying genders enhances it.  So, they each have their place.

And anyways, have these same ladies you speak of never played the Zelda series just because you can't play as the Princess?  Image IPB

Oh, and as for what draws me to a title...usually quality and a good story.  I'm not interested in wasting my time on trash.  Of course, there isn't a clear characteristic about a game that makes it irresistable to me.

I have not purchased games for this reason (witches, Arcania Gothic 4) when I play an RPG I want to feel attached to my character - make it personal and customized, otherwise it's not much of an RPG in my opinion

You've obviously never played The Longest Journey

April is a great example that woman character can be a hero without using any "male" instruments, which usually developers try and do it poorly (mail bikini ect.). She can beat storyline and situations it gives her with her heart, not muscle, being smart, intelligent girl she is.
Tis sad that in DA:O you could't play "smart girl", while Morrigan was smart for you. She was a female character made of lust, fear, intimidation, a Medea and Circe of that story, pullin strings and savin warden and everything. Yeah, femWarden could swing her sword just as any male could. But she could't dance around alchemic cauldron making dragon-child for herself to save the one she loved. I did't find it a fair exchange of abilities.

in DA I played:

a) My canon warden, nice-guy, LG paladin warrior type, mostly serious but cracked the occasional joke, fell for and pursued Leli singlemindedly.

B) Currently playing a bed-hopping bad-girl mage, sarcastic but steel-willed when necessary. Bit of an ethical slut.

c) Gonna play a strong, silent utterly single-minded, very pragmatic Dalish rogue.

d) And finally a ass-kicking, intimidatory, take-no-prisoners female City elf.

I think DAO does allow you to develop your character and gender plays its part in that too. People are constantly surprised that there's a female Grey Warden for example, and the responses you choose to that come from the character you're playing. Choosing gender and its consequences on the game world are extremely important in my book.

Being a male character may affect my decisions in the game but I'd play irregardless. There have been so many games that are male lead only.

I just appreciate the ability to choose.

Looks like I missed an interesting debate. In response to hangman, I vastly prefer games that give me the option of playing a female character. As time marches on I have less patience for forced male protagonists in games. There are several older games I adore where that was the case, such as "Planescape: Torment", but I generally avoid newer games with those limitations. The exception is when someone buys me such a game as a gift. They tend to end up at the bottom of the my pile, though. I was given "the Witcher" years ago and it still remains in shrinkwrap, in large part because I have little interest in playing Geralt. I just feel... comfortable playing a woman. I find it easier to get into my character and connect with the story. When I play a male, it feels more like a game. That makes it harder to immerse myself in the experience, and makes me more critical of the whole experience.

Free time is not so abundant that I feel a need to fill it with as many games as possible. That makes it easier still to be selective.

I play games for pure escapism, and playing something what I cannot be in real life is exactly what draws me in, be that a fireball-happy murderous mage, an INT 4 barbarian brute, an insanely charismatic thief who'd gladly help a villager and then picks their pockets clean right away and so on. Roleplaying a female? I am a female, I don't need to roleplay that. In short - gender is irrelevant when stuff like magic and bloody huge hammers are involved.

I have no problem playing male character's in games like Assassin's Creed or Bioshock, because it doesn't feel like I'm playing the characters, but watching their stories unfold, like I'm just helping them out (I like watching games being played by someone else too, so I guess that fits).

But I do have problem playing male in RPGs. Especially Gerald. It was truly a pain to play him and I didn't even finish the game. I think it was because he was voiced and the dialogue choices were mostly really douchey (especially if he was talking to one of the "offical romances", god that was disturbing, the way the girls always were "and I want you in my bed hint hint flirt flirt"). I don't want to play a "macho gets all women in his bed" type of character.

Anyway, it doesn't matter, because I, thank the heavens, have Bioware to make me play awesome girl characters! So I think my answers is: yes, in RPG I want to play women and will not play guys EVER now that I have a choice. XD.

Funny, I thought the same about Geralt, too. I never had sex with all of the women that offer this freely. I mean...hello? They are all a bit easy, aren't they? So I just stuck with Triss, 'cause that felt more Canon for me.
Either way, i think it's pretty annoying when you are playing RPGs and the (preset) male character has to visit varous brothels and all the women in the game war only a minimum, just to cover the most important parts, but not even that really. As if women cannot survive in a fantasy World without selling theirselves.

I prefer to play women. Maybe because I am a woman? Or because I find women more attractive? Or maybe I like playing characters who are socially at a disadvantage (elf mages were my favourite)? I don't know. Usually, my characters have a completely different appearance and personality to me, but I still prefer to have a female. Still, I'll play a male as well for the full experience, and preferably an attractive man.

By all means, post it Catabuca, I have some theories as well....

:D

By 'too lengthy to post' I think I meant 'too tangled up in my own confused ideas about my own gender and sexuality and the way it relates to society in general to post' :P

For me too lengthy to post meant too lengthy to completely elaborate on.  However, if I were to summarize it, I would say it had to do with me feeling more empathy towards women due to the many male figures in my life being hard to connect emotionally with, while I have had some emotionally passionate female relationships.  So, females are painted in a good light for me and easier for me to connect with emotionally.  Hence why a female PC makes for a more enriching experience.

I don't believe it has anything to do with homosexuality for me, since I am heterosexual, but It might involve some slight gender confusion due to me feeling rather effeminate for a guy, even though I don't necessarily act feminine.

Well, I think that post proves that personal information is much easier to give to strangers who have no idea who you are.
