Hi folks,
A friend of mine is having a spot of bother.  We've been playing NWN1 & NWN2 online for years via Virgin & Sky broadband (cable & lately WIFI) & the odd LAN session.

A couple of months ago, he changed his ISP to Orange.  Suddenly he can't connect to any online servers - just gets time out messages every time.  Tried hosting, tried joining, tried LAN, tried direct connect to IP - timeout every time.

Tried opening the relevant ports mentioned in every tutorial we can find here - still no joy.

Only help from Orange support was to open the portsvia the method we'd already tried.

Unfortunately, he got rid of his old Sky-issued Netgear DG834 router when he got the new DGN2000 from Orange, so we're having trouble working out if its the router that's broken.

Have McAfee installed, but have tried with the firewall disabled & no change.  Windows firewall disabled.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Sadly, WOW still works for him, if it was the other way round, maybe I could wean him off that children's game :P
DDO works fine too, although neither of us likes the Lara Croft approach to Dungeoneering!  We need to get this fixed before he goes & buys Guildwars & wants me to play that on our Tuesday night sessions instead - save me!

Can your friend bypass the router and go straight from modem to computer?

If he does that, does it work?

Sorry, modem to computer?

Do you mean a direct cable connection from router to computer? If so, unfortunately no - its too far away.

In case that's not what you mean - his current setup is:

Phone line comes into house

Is split into phone / broadband cables

Latter cable plugs into router

Router broadcasts wifi signal

Hope that makes sense.

Actually, NWN DM meant connecting directly to the MODEM, which will determine if the router is the issue if he able to host or play. If not able to host or play, then it may be either the MODEM or the ISP.

Hi Selene,

Sorry, still not with you - maybe its something that's set up differently here in the UK?

This is the only bit of hardwear that exists between his computer & the cable coming in through the wall http://www.netgear.co.uk/dgn2000.php - I'm guessing that the modem & the router are the same thing here?

I'm guessing you're suggesting that he connects directly to the DGN2000 via cable - is that right?

Success!!!

So, after going to starbucks and been able to connect from there, I know it must be a router problem, so I called Orange (my ISP in the UK) tech support, and I had to go into my router setting (Router is a Netgear DGN1000) (to get into router settings, open your internet browser - internet explorer/chrome/whatever, and in the address bar type 192.168.0.1 [or 192.168.1.1 for many other router types])

Once in there I had to click on ADSL settings under the setup tab, and change multiplexing method from VC-based to LLC based. And hey-presto, I can now connect again!

So for anyone who has this problem with orange and NWN2, and after all my research there are a lot of us, or anyone with this router, there's your fix!

Now if only I could bring my text's back I'd be all set.... But still, after what I had to go through it still feels like a win

Sorry for the necro but I just have to thank you good sir, your post right there is the best thing that has happened to me this week, and made me so happy I hyperventilated and almost passed out.

Cor - I'd pretty much given up on this - but glad to know someone found a solution. Passed it onto the friend who was having trouble originally & he confirms he's been able to connect now - thanks LintNZ!
