Didn't realise there was any pre-order bonus, see Steam pop up today and tell me, hey, you can pre-order DA2!
Now I see that if I order the game from anywhere, I will then have to pay more to get access to content people buying the game a few days before me get for free. Not even content like items, which I could happily not care about, but companions and missions - active game content, no less!
Boy, I sure don't feel shafted.

I'm not sure it is in their power, as the agreement reached with Steam may only be for the current "standard" edition (is that the right term? you know what I mean, I trust) and any currently available DLC. To offer the SE on Steam would likely require an agreement regarding the SE - which they could not make in time to offer it in the first place.
Speaking as someone who works in this industry, I can tell you fairly plainly that the chances of this being the case are pretty much zero.
But really, the question is more about whether or not EA is doing everything they can to get this content delivered to as many users as possible. One of the biggest releases scheduled for 2011, and they can get it done on bit players (relatively speaking) like Impulse but not on Steam? Hard to swallow, but not as bitter of a pill as the fact that they don't feel the need to simply take the extra step to make it available delay non-withstanding, which I assure you, Steam would accommodate.
I'll defer to your stated knowledge of the industry. However, wouldn't Steam have a stronger bargaining position than those smaller outfits you mention? Wouldn't that perhaps make the negotiations tougher?
And let's assume Bioware wanted to extend the SE, and Steam went along. Did you see the other thread (now closed) where people mentioned they only now had learned of the SE or the time limit? Or those who only now had the money to make the purchase? Would they get an extension too?
The situation is not good for people who prefer Steam, that's understandable. My only issue is the people who seem to think this was a targeted attack on them (which you don't seem to be, thus far, anyway

EmperorNish, I'm curious... Assuming EA actually did do this(which is speculative, but I agree not something hard to believe), why do you have a problem with it(well outside of not being able to buy it on steam)? I mean, I could understand if you REALLY like steam(I do as well) but why would you not buy it because of this? You think it is wrong for being competitive with steam?
I've got no problem with other stores, except for their more prevalent region locking and the odd game that happens to be double the price (but that happens too Steam). Real competition would be a lowered preorder price like what Impulse did, not denying one store the game. Even though the game was steamworks, Direct2Drive gave a discount and extra dlc for pre-ordering Civilization 5 through them, that is actual competition.
Oh and Darkspore isn't coming to Steam either, ha.

If they couldn't get the deal done before I doubt they can do it now.
Ah thats cool, I can do the negotiations for them:
EA: Hey Valve, we want to add something to the DA2 sales.
Valve: Cool, wassup?
EA: We want you to track anyone that have bought the game since it got up and until this sunday. If they bought it during that period they will get the SE key.
Valve: Aight dude, gimme 5 mins to set a timer to stop.
EA: Youre the best!
Valve: You too!

That's exactly the kind of attitude I think is damaging to PC gaming as a whole though.

Or, y'know, the several months that the deal was available and advertised.

Where was the deal advertised? I didn't spot it anywhere. Granted, I wasn't actively looking - but the game isn't out for two months. I didn't feel a pressing need to get my pre-order in, especially in an age where it's faster for me to download the game from a digital retailer on launch day than wait for a box to arrive.

Steam saved the dying PC market, I remember going into stores and not finding any PC games on shelves. I had to search long and hard to find PC games. Is XBox 360 or the PS3 killing gaming? Are Activision or EA killing gaming?

Damaging it for you maybe, but obviously enhancing it for a lot of other people. No reason to look down on other people who have different preferences to how they want video-games distributed.

Digital delivery does not mean Steam as a whole. The PC is about being an open platform, about anyone being able to sell a game, make a game, mod a game, etc.. That is the core of it... everything going through Valve is the antithesis of that.

I'm not even going to speak on whether or not it was an intentional slight against Steam as a platform/distributor. It isn't really my primary concern, and nobody on either side of that is going to come out and say it were that the case.
From Steam's end, though, they don't really have any incentive to reject content that would draw additional customers to their client. It's just not logical when the result winds up being the situation that we're in now, where users are more likely to actually avoid purchasing the game altogether through Steam because of a perceived lack of support from the publisher.
In the end EA is one of the largest publishers of video game software in the world. Dragon Age 2 is one of the biggest releases scheduled for 2011. The situation as it stands, at least as far as the PC market is concerned, is quite frankly unacceptable.

There is nothing "open platform" about PC gaming anymore, with or without Steam.

Tony, and others, the deal with Steam was not available in time for the Signature Edition offer. I know this will not prevent you from thinking this was a big conspiracy, but the deal was not finalized in time for the Signature Edition. However, we are pleased to now have a deal in place with Steam for Steam users such as yourself. You did have the option of pre-ordering through a physical retailer or otehr digital retailers. If you chose not to, that was your decision. As such, comments accusing us of "ripping off" people are not welcome here and will be considered spam with all implied penalties associated with posting spam on these forums.
As for The Black Emporium, Fadeshear and the Lion of Orlais, the Black Emporium is available for all new copies of DAII, so that does include Steam. Fadeshear and Lion of Orlais are also available on Steam as long as you pre-order. They are only available as pre-order items and will not be available once the game launches, but they are available on Steam until teh game ships.
Completely understandable. So extend the Signature Edition Deal to allow your Steam customers time to act on it.

As far as DA2 goes, I'll be waiting for the Ultra Megamax Edition. The DLC for DA:O was mediocre and generally a waste of money. Witch Hunt in particular was just a lazy piece of design. Or, I might just not buy it at all. I loathe EA because they've been poisonous to gaming for a very long time. I got a little sad when I heard Bioware got bought out. I also think DA2 isn't going to be that great of a game, definitely not for $60. I'm HIGHLY skeptical of sequels that come out a year to a year and a half later with downgraded visuals, a higher price point, and less favorable customer options. After hearing Hawke's pompous, posh voice acting, my interest in the game deflated quite a bit. Forcing customers into a 2 months ahead pre-order is a dangerous precedent to set and I (mockingly) applaud DA2/Bioware fanboys for empowering EA further and allowing these things to happen because it's only going to get worse in the future.
I implore Steam users miffed at missing out on the DA2:SE to put your money somewhere else and pre-order The Witcher 2. You won't be supporting a cancerous lesion on the gaming industry, EA, but you will be supporting some fantastic people in CDProjekt. They offer more content than DA2 at a better pre-order price point. If you pre-order from Gog.com, you get it DRM free and a free game as an added bonus. All for $15 less than the laughable price point of DA2. Hell, go buy ANY other game but this one.

This.
I'll be honest, I was waiting for the deal to come up on Steam and feel that it was given a proverbial slap in the face. Steam is what I use and I bought previous games from Bioware on it, heck I even bought games like Bioshock TWICE (on holiday specials) so that I can have all my games on Steam. My interest is the SE and the SE alone, I'm not overly impressed by what was put up on Steam and to be honest, anything less is a major disappointment.
You guys need to fix this and please don't try to take us for fools. That's all I'm going to say about that.

To add to my previous post, I did purchase the Digital Deluxe whathaveyou Edition of Dragon Age: Origins on Steam. Steam is my only legitimate option for digitally downloading games. So yeah, I do feel shafted and rightfully so.
