First off, I hope I give enough information. Secondly, forgive me in advance if information I *do* give is unimportant or irrelevant. I would rather give more information than too little, just in case. :)

Ok, here is the stats first:

Windows 7
Steam installed games - default directory for files is my docs (not through steam directories)

[*]PC regular & PS3  versions, played uploaded files etc.  took lots of pics.  [*]Computer dies. I do not have access to this computer.  It does make a lovely foot stool though. [*]New computer, reinstalled regular DA:O ( I use STEAM btw) [*]Bought ultimate version for the remaining DLC I didn't have + expansion because it was cheaper.  This seemed to cause problems?  should I unregister the first one?? [*]
[*]Now, it says I have 80 files of the 50 allowed.    I looked, I really do not have that many. I deleted most of what is on my computer and in my social network characters.  [*]
Problem is, I theorize, that because I am over the files limit, it is blocking the temporary upload of my character files.

Is there a way to get rid of phantom files?  All files IN my game at present are *not* uploaded. Only the ones that are currently ON the site now do I want to keep.  These ones here: http://social.biowar...6/albums/539214  there are only FIVE pictures :)  If there were more I would delete them but they do not appear to me regardless where I look, on site or ingame.[*]
[*]There are a few characters in my profile I lost to my computer dying I would like to keep, but if i have to delete them to make this work, I would.  [*]
[*]Thanks in advance. :)

I count approximately 35 character files on your PC persona. If you haven't been keeping a close eye on them, that there should be more than 50 in total is not implausible. With 80 files, however, you may well be in a pickle.

Per 3.2 in the thread in my signature you should not need to delete your screenshots (you can try but it shouldn't help). To upload new characters and screenshots, though, you will need to clean out the excess files that have gathered on your persona, and this can only be done by deleting characters. Unfortunately, there is the risk that you may not have characters enough to get below the limit, leaving you with no uploaded characters and no way to upload more.

The deletion process is described in a sticky. I propose you apply it to any and all characters you don't immediately care about, then judge whether to delete the rest as well. Specifically, you should keep deleting unwanted or unimportant characters until they no longer appear on your persona, making sure to check your persona afterwards and waiting some hours (up to a day) to see if they reappear. When they do not reappear, for characters that still have entries on your diagnostics page you will need to attempt to upload them again, but in this you will probably fail. You will then have to forfeit or proceed with the remaining characters.

Owning multiple versions of the game should not be relevant.

Thanks so much. I will kill off all my old ones but this profile picture and hope then. I can no longer play them anyway, so they are just sentimental :) I would rather have functional profile and no current characters (if it works).

Ok, I killed off all but this level 1 person, who hypothetically should have none, or very few, files. It still says 56 or something files though.

I did notice on the Profile diagnostic page that there is FIVE characters, even though when I go to all three game profiles there is only one total.

Does this mean I am out of luck? Is there no way to wipe my profile clean and just start again ( save for my one album? )

I will go through the deletion sticky again in the morning though, in case there is a way to bump those missing characters off.  They just are not in ANY profile to delete, or I would! Nor are they on this computer at all!  :(

Thank you for your time in answering, I appreciated it immensely!

You won't know just yet. After deleting characters the webserver needs time to update the persona again, this can take half an hour or day but usually about a couple of hours. If after about a day's time no other characters appear/reappear it's a good indication that they won't, then you won't be able to remove any more files from that character (until you can upload again). Your persona updated about half an hour ago. It is imperative that you view your persona after deleting characters, or the update won't be triggered.

You could also manually save your current portrait, then use it for a future character if/when you get your persona cleaned up. If you ultimately don't make it to below 50, though, you'd still be out of luck, so I'd wait until you're sure you'd have to.

There is no way to simply purge personas.

Thanks so much for your help. I am whittling the files down slowly but surely. I keep having to create characters and waiting for them to upload character xml and then deleting them (thanks for having such great instructions in your sig files) and while they still havent left my profile yet ( 4 "phantom" characters" who simply won't erase, which is kind of weird as they aren't actually IN my profile to erase) every time I create and delete them some files seem to vanish, so I will keep doing that whenever I have time :)

Thanks so much! One big DELETE button at the end of each file on profile diagnostics would have made it so much easier lol

Will let you know if i ever get them purged through character creation and deletion :)

Hmm... "The deletion process is described in a sticky." I may be slow or something, but what does this mean? Where is this sticky?

It does help too. I have been working through it :) Unfortunately, I got down to one character with still 45/50 files :( But I DID make it under 50 :D Thanks again!

My biggest problem is trying to remember what origin those two phantom characters are from. :D It's been so long that I can't remember. But then I'll just go through every origin until I get it right. :)

I am having the same problem. I don't understand why can't they just purge the system. I will try this method.

Oh I wish I could also! I know my old dead harddrive has the files stuck there (41 of them!) and I can't access it to delete them so I am left with room for only two characters :(  It is very frustrating.  If there was only a "delete online storage" button....

The above method DID help me get rid of a LOT of files though ( from over 80 down to 45) so it does work :) I was just an alt-a-holic and loved taking screens.  Serves me right I suppose :) Good luck guys!

Hey I am having a similar problem although I do not have phantom characters. The only characters that are on my profile diagnostic page are the ones that I am still playing. (its says I have 84/50 files and it says I have 80 screenshot in online storage)

Yeah, I have screenshots taking the room as well. Deleting the characters wouldn't open up enough files to have me upload anything. I hope BioWare would fix this and give us an easy way to wipe the storage clean.

well, it is either screens or character files no longer viewable on our profile. I have ZERO screenshots in my game, and I think less than 12 online. I have two characters ( that is 8 files there) and yet almost 50 files. There *has* to be files on my old computer, IN the game (not uploaded) that are taking up the space *or alternately* character files that are not showing up on profile diagnostics. :( I have done all I can do at this point, because the old hard drive is fried.

Edit: it says I have 41 screenshots "in on-line storage".  I have 11 or so uploaded to the website from my old computer.  I have zero in my game on my new computer.

Local files (files on the hard drive) have no effect on online storage. Other users have previously experienced phantom screenshots, for which there is no fix, but they are no longer supposed to be taking up space.

Where are you getting that number from?

I count that I have 38 character files and rest are screenshots, so even if I deleted all my characters, I'd still be stuck above the Max amount of files allowed.

I realize that it says that screenshots should not count as files but there they are. I have "deleted" all of them from my persona as well as my computer and the files persist.

Oh, bloody hell.

Well, my only guess would be that phantom screenshots still count against the limit while working screenshots do not. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to remove phantom screenshots. Can either of you confirm that we are indeed dealing with phantom screenshots?

It says I have screenshots and they don't show up anywhere on the site or on my computer and have not for quite some time. That really is all the evidence I have but I am not sure how I would no otherwise.

I have contacted Jeff Rousell and alerted him to this thread but he has not gotten back to me as of yet. He has however stated that complete file wipes are not possible because they are handled by a third party.

That is what phantom screenshots are.

I guess we are the phantom screenshot group then. I wonder who the third party might be? Can you un-register games and then re-register with a new profile? I really don't want to have to do that though. I wonder if they could convince the third party to give us a "purge online storage" button. Probably not, but a girl can dream. I miss uploading my characters.

My only proof is that I don't have any screenshots. I even turned off the auto ones and have been taking all screenshots now with Fraps.

Hey Snoteye, thanks for all your advice in this thread. It was much appreciated. :)
