They only really do this to try and show how good the sequel is. The're trying to give the reader more incentive to buy the product.

And herein lies the problem with the gaming "journalism" industry.  They shouldn't be giving me more incentive to purchase anything, it should be cold hard facts combined with an objective opinion.

Actually they broke down what each section of the mage grid was over here:

http://social.biowar.../5705061/1&lf=8

So the top 2 (left and middle) would be Elemental (different types), Entropy on the top right
Middle was Spirit, Arcane, and Creation (from left to right)
Specializations on the bottom

Yes, previews shouldn't be subjective! Screw the fact that previews are nothing more than pre-release reviews, which reflect someone's opinions and thus are subjective because of their very nature. How ridiculous!

OK, now I'm officially in love with the new mage talent tree (or web, whatever). it looks good and diverse enough and doesn't have many useless spells at the same time. the graphic looks better too. and a question since the devs seem to be lurking around: do you get specialization points like Origins (level7-14)? also do you need to unlock specializations?

BTW, is it just me, or the reviewer's lady Hawke looks a LOT like Morrigan?

This will sound really sad and pathetic but female Hawke is pretty. :D

It would only be sad and/or pathetic if it hadn't been said a few times before you.  She's pretty but I still prefer custom-makes.

Objective opinion?  What the hell is that?

I wonder who LadyHawke is talking with. Merill? "Anders"? Random mage she's run into?

She is really pretty, and almost makes me want to use a default face instead of making my own (but only almost).

Most likely Merill. The background looks as it would fit the  her recruitment area. During the mission you have to do before she joins the team Meriill uses a spell that is some kind of or similar to bloodmagic according to another review.

I think the Dalish are the kind who would say "spirit" just like Zathrian did... I am sure this is Merrill, Hawke's speaking to...

Characters from the "expansion pack" is mentioned... Heck, he may even be a cameo. I don't really care though, I am more interested in waiting for March to come.

That made me think of Howe rather than Anders.

Another interesting screenshot.

I think previous posters are right about the upper-left web being fire/ice, the upper-middle one being earth/lightning, the upper-right one being entropy, and the centre-right one being creation. I also think the specializations are fairly easy to peg, as earlier posters have noticed: force mage in the lower-left, spirit healer in the lower-middle, and blood mage in the lower-right.

That said, I disagree about the centre-left and centre webs. Look at the full-sized version of the picture. The centre-left web has two icons that resemble skulls and one that resembles a skeleton, suggesting that it's spirit. The centre web has icons including a glowing brain, a shield with a symbol on it (arcane shield?), sparkly crossed swords, something that looks like crushing prison, etc. I think the centre web is arcane this time around, with some shuffling of items that used to be in spirit being moved to arcane.

That sounds like a good assessment. Overall, the new system looks awesome, I think.

I just have one gripe about it; there seems to be very few points in total to spend, which concerns me because it might mean we'll wind wind up having every talent/spell by the endgame, which would make the choice of which talents/spells to pick redundant in the long run. Of course, the level cap might be lower to counter this, or you may not receive talent/spell points every time you level up, who knows?

judging by this pic, i think that are more upgrades in the skill trees that we just can't see right now in the "mage trees" picture

Awesome screenshots! Especially the increased view distance, and many of the surroundings having much more detail than I had anticipated. And to think that those shots were taken from the console version. I think I'll very likely adore the combat in this game! The game just seems greater by the day! :)

I'm curious about the map. It depicts day Kirkwall, night Kirkwall, travel.........

If you select night before day Kirkwall, will you miss certain items or events? Will you lose a day in Kirkwall and any important opportunities?

the devs said that you can change between day and night freely in certain areas. day version and night versions have different things (like different merchants and quests) but there is no active clock so you won't miss anything if you go to the day version and come back to the night version. think of them as two separate areas like say, Redcliff and Denerim in DA:O.

no, that's not quite it. the buildings and such are similar with different lighting like (why highever?) redcliff in day and in night, but you can travel freely between two versions for any number of times (at least as far as we know) which you couldn't do for the night version of redcliff. it was just there as part of a quest and was then gone forever.

Really excited about the new screenshots, especially the one with the spells! And lady Hawke looks ever so lovely.

-looks at calendar and sigh- Are we there yet?
