I don't even know where to begin with how amazing this dlc was.
Completely worth my money.
The music was spectacular, the combat music makes you feel like there is this epic sense of urgency and heroic struggle against your evil enemies, something that I had not experienced since I was fighting my way to stop Sovereign in ME1 on the Citadel.
The music for the conclusion of the DLC accentuates the emotions that it brings out in you PERFECTLY. It's crazy, I felt like I was watching a summer blockbuster sometimes just by listening to the music soundtracks. Don't get me wrong, the music they use for ME1 and ME2 is nice, the "vigil" song is my fav, but the music they used in Overlord actually evoked emotions out of me that I never expected. To avoid spoilers, all I'll say is especially when you confront the VI at the end....
The overall cinematic quality was really just amazing. I remember Mr. Casey Hudson doing an interview where he said that they were trying to incorporate a more cinematic feel. Well, he was spot on! Everything from the level design, to the level "reacting...." to you, and the inclusion of an actual high def cut scene to demonstrate the epic destruction scene that we got to trigger and witness first hand was INCREDIBLE.
And that was only about half way through the DLC!!!
Then came the more than welcome surprise of the overworld of Aite.
WOW. It was like a breath of fresh air, filling my lungs with something that I (and I know many others) were expecting in ME2 from the start. Being able to actually freely go and decide where I wanted to go, what I wanted to do was sorely missed in ME2 and being able to explore the overworld of Aite was a very nice addition that I sincerely hope they expand upon in the future.
Hell, even the small details were great, hovering over the water, producing that different sound with the HH, the animals, everything just had an amazing amount of detail. The only bad thing about this aspect was that their skybox had cloud textures where the skybox curves at the horizon so it kinda messed up the sky vista, but Im sure they saw that and will avoid that in the future.
The variety of the locations was very fun. I can't honestly tell you, (cuz I dont remember) how long I stood there staring at the lava float up rocks only to engulf them again on the road to Prometheus Station. It was a really really nice touch, including the ability to go off the beaten path a little, whether through caves or with air vents to get unique vistas or find some minerals.
The interactive element of Atlas station and the combat there was just spot on. It was interesting, fun and just the right amount of intense, even though more intensity is never a bad thing in my book. (all this of course disregarding the glaring flaws of the HH, which I hope the devs have taken into consideration by now)
The on foot combat scenarios and design was just as good in my opinion, it was all just executed very well.
last but certainly not least, the drama and emotion that the "VI" situation on a whole evoked was really intense. I never expected it.
And the Paragon interrupt was AWEEEESOMMMMEEEE. FINALLY!!!! Almost every paragon interrupt in the game so far makes my Shep act like an over feeling wuss. This time, it was what it was meant to be:
Being a die hard badazz, while being on the side of right at the same time. THIS was very impressive to me, as it suggests the devs have really been listening to our complaints of Paragon interrupts in general.
Overlord is easily if not my favorite, one of my favorite things to do in this game.
The only thing they need to do now is give our squad real armor, so they can then go and make real hazardous planets that aren't all garden worlds, and let us exit the HH so they can get rid of that God-awful scan/recover thing in the HH. (which even looks retarded, and feels retarded with the whole "push you out of the way" thing)
Even though this DLC was amazing in so many ways I can't even remember, I really hope that for ME3 they give us a bunch of different planets with different conditions, much bigger overworld maps to explore and "frolick" in, and maybe limit the actual fighting/interaction/ plot area to a small thing like the size of one of the stations in overlord.
I just hope they realize we're not expecting an "overlord" every time we planet fall in ME3.
And bring back the open space skyboxes of ME1 with stars and 3d planets and stuff Bioware. Don't get me wrong, the one in overlord was quite nice, but it wasn't as good as may of the ones in ME1 where we were in open space and got 3d objects in the sky and not just 2d pictures of planets or whatever.
So yeah, sorry for the long post, but just wanted to say how great this dlc was, and the small last steps I believe Bioware needs to take to really nail planet exploration in ME3.
THANK YOU BIOWARE!!!! (yeah I know I paid for it, but still, THANKS!!)
