Oh I can't wait for console games to go up to 70 dollars just so I can laugh at the irony as some of these "it's only 10 bucks!" folks choke on their own words.

Why would they choke on their words?

I'm referring to those on console saying it's only 10 bucks and that it's only fair that PC gamers pay the same price as them for their games. Despite the fact you know PC gaming is more expensive than console. But that apparently doesn't matter. <_<

I remember when brand new PC games were about $30-35.  I remember when movies were $5.  I remember when gas cost $1.09/gallon.

What a rip off that I now have to pay $50 for a PC game, $11 to see a movie, and $3.39/gallon for gas!!!!!!

The outrage!!!!

I demand we return to the prices from 1985.  Or better yet, 1950.  I want to buy a new car for $2000, too.

Seriously - this thread makes me lol.

Avatar costs 32 dollars on blu-ray. Lasts 2 hours

Dragon Age 2 costs 60 dollars, probably lasts 40+ hours not counting replays

I really don't see the problem here

It is less than half as long as Origins?

Origins length was 40+ hours. If you included all the DLC + Awakenings it jumps to 60-80 hours long. And I assume DA2 is probably going to be that long by the time ultimate edition is released.

Also, this section is directed to the whiners in this thread, there are retailers that are selling it for 50 dollars, go find it instead of whining about the price. I bought the game for 60 bucks and I was shocked to see it for 50 on another retailer, but I don't feel any regret for doing so, because I knew I wanted it. I also paid an additional 7 dollars tax :S so it was like 67 dollars in the end. Honestly, you can boycott it now and complain how prices are going up, but thats how economies work. Things aren't going to stay cheap especially with the trends happening right now.

If you really wanted DA2, you would of bought it instead of complaining about it. No one wants to hear people complain about pricing, especially when you can find cheap deals already if you actually done your research.

Currently?  No, I prefer the 360.  Before I got the 360?  Yea, I was.

This.

That's ridculous. The only way I'd pay that much is if I was making half that amount at work per hour.

I'm actually surprised that it took this long for PC games to start catching up, specifically for the very reason you said.  That the pc is typically more expensive, which I personally would assume, that PC gamers for the most part, have more disposable income.

My mistake, I wasn't aware PC games used to be $30.

Yea, they were.  About 20 years ago.  Image IPB

20 years ago? Wow, that's pretty steep for games that require a single button.

Consumer inflation in the US has been stable over the past 10 years-

That's arrant nonsense.  The CPI looks flat because real estate prices collapsed, but everything else is up.

Why?  Because the money supply has grown.

there has been no great inflation of the money supply.  It has actually been negative in the US quite recently.

Are you insane?  What do you think "quantitative easing" is?  What do you happens when the federal reserve lowers interest rates to zero?

What games?  25 years ago I was paying $60-80 for new games.  Sure, there were smaller titles for less, but the big time games (such as DA2 is) cost far more than they do now.

And even $30 in 1990 dollars is more than we're paying now.

Wow.... I did not even see that.  Ya, not quite sure how someone can argue that there is no inflation...  Just go to the grocery store and go shopping, prices have definitely gone up.  There are a lot of agriculture and rare earth materials and goods you can look at that just screams inflation.

The idea that stuff like this doesn't effect games is a bit silly.  Does this mean I like the prices where they are?  Heck no, I would like the prices at $5, but that doesn't mean that I think that the prices are unreasonable either(I wouldnt be buying games if that was the case).

I'm pretty sure I paid about $35-$40 for Myst back in, what, 94?  Probably $39.99.

You guys really have to stop complaining about 60 dollars. Most of the world pays more, even when our currency is worth more or on par.

Wow, I had no idea how inexpensive video games are in other parts of the world. Standard large release video game here (in New Zealand) is $120 for console, about $110 for PC. Usually.

Damn.

woah a kiwi. Woot! Anyway, we do pay ridiculousy large amounts of money for games here. Order overseas, it's much cheaper lol. 120 here is about 90 US

Prices in 94 for games were a lot more elastic, hell prices until the PlayStation/N64 were less then consistent.

Is developing a game for the PC cheaper than developing it for a console?

It doesn't matter how much you spend on your PC. If a game costs just as much to develop for PC as it does for a console, it makes perfect sense that they would sell them for the same amount.

Given all of the hardware differences that cause bugs that have to be patched at a later date, I would say developing for the PC is probably more expensive.

I would, but our PC hasn't run anything new since NWN2 (yeah, haha, we desperately need to replace it). We buy mainly console games, and because of zoning and blahblah, you get the picture.

We buy most of our games on release anyway, can't wait for it to ship from overseas!

As for the actual topic itself; how long have games been sitting around the $50 mark in the US? If it's been for a couple of years, there isn't that much to complain about, in all honesty. Even ignoring the cost of to make the game itself, the companies that sell it also have to make a profit so they can afford to pay employees and buy in more games.

Not sure if you mean xbox 360 or ps3, but ps3 doesn't have that problem. I picked up DAO in USA (for much cheaper) and it plays fine. Only problem is DLC, but just set up a USA account and you're good to go lol. Not too sure about Xbox360 though...

On topic, a point already put forth by users. Demand creates (higher) market price.

The price required to produce a game has gone up, coupled with inflation, yet comp games have remained relatively stable for years. An uptick of $10 is both expected and not that big of a deal.

Supply and demand dictates the price should be what the market will bear. If it is too much, prices will drop as no one buys gmes.

I feel a certain sense of indignation at seeing a $60 pc game.

I can't help but think, oh really? What makes you so damn special?
