Could bioware lose sales because of all this dlc?

True but this year (2011) there are so many different good choices in terms of gaming that waiting might not be an issue.

This is mind-boggling. I don't understand how anyone can defend the decision to only have Sebastian be free for people who commit to a game 2 months before a single review comes out.
If I buy the game on release day, or a week after release, because the reviews are positive, BioWareEA are still getting my full $60. But because I chose to be wise and not buy into their hype that I definitely will enjoy the game, I miss an entire companion and questline.
The music industry is a business too. But I've never bought an album and then been charged money later for bonus tracks.
I agree it is absurd, it is a classic recent EA tactic.

Yep, 2011 looks like a fantastic gaming year, so far. But you can't wait for all games, you've to pick at least one or two to keep you occupied.

With so many positive replies, you'd think people actually like buying DLC right after spending $60 on the game! If you have the spare cash and don't mind, good for ya.
I have to register my discontent with this in the vain hope things might change in the future. EA's strategy of splitting up the game from day one is just terrible for the game, the players and their image. Like other posters, they lost my sale a long time ago and if I buy the game, it's going to be one year later when they repackage it. And it's cheaper.
Skyrim, on the other hand, I will be buying new because Bethesda have a good record of spending time on games and not trying to grab every penny from my wallet (Horse armour forgiven).
If you guys don't become more discerning consumers, EA will just continue with this policy.
Speaking of discerning consumers--I got all this content free because I took advantage of the offer to have my pre-order upgraded to signature edition for no extra cost. Don't whine or try to imply that I an undiscerning consumer because you missed out.
Sorry, I meant no offense to those who preordered the game. But what you've done is exactly what EA want the customer to do - they split it up then offer it whole IF you preorder before reviews. If you trust Bioware and EA, this is the most logical thing to do and there is no problem. But, for a variety of reasons, many don't trust them and we'd rather wait. EA is quite intentionally trying to bypass the review process, kill the second hand market and encourage early adoption all in one stroke with this. It makes sense to marketing managers, but not to the wary consumer. Gamers like me wish they'd just stop all the tricks and concentrate on making a better game.

PREORDER GAME
WAIT FOR REVIEWS
DO I LIKE?
YES > BUY GAME
NO > CANCEL PREORDER
It's not hard. Don't cry if you didn't put an ounce of effort into it.

I personally am playing Rift in March and will get Witcher 2 in May. I would have purchased the SE for DA2 but that was not on Steam so I wait for the Ulltimate Edition, but that is a completely different subject.

It's not really a trick if you can see so clearly through it, is it?
If you're unsure of the game then the best thing you can do is wait for reviews, of course. Just understand that Prince Vael is intended for the signature edition first, and is available as DLC for everyone else who doesn't want the soundtrack etc. but still want some in-game quests and whatnot. Nobody is trying to cheat you.
Would you be happier if they just refused to offer Prince Vael to anyone who does not purchase the SE?

Look at it this way:
- You could pay full price on day 1, plus $7 for Sebastien;
- You could wait a whole week or so, buy it used for $10 less, and use the $10 you saved to buy Sebastien.
When you look at it this way, it's actually a completely moronic business decision to not include Sebastien with all new copies (like with Shale) because a number of people will be giving EA $7 instead of their share of the full $60.
Shale was an incentive to combat used copies. Sebastien was an incentive to combat "waiting for reviews".
God of War 3 was hyped as "the best action game ever" pre-release. It turned out being the worst in the franchise.
"Don't believe the hype."

Besides we all knwo that we are funding various wars in Africa just by buying the physical copies of these games!
Actually it's the digital copies that fund the war cause you know RARE METALS are used to make computers servers and consoles so they need to have servers to distribute the DLC. PLASTIC does not fun wars in Africa. Just so you know.

I for one will go on record as saying I am going to wait a week (at most) for the inevitable used copies to show up, and that yes, BioWareEA will be getting no money from my purchase of the core game.
Actually, with newly released games you'll save 3$.
Have fun spending an extra 4$.

Well.... you're still buying the game. Profit will still go to them. So.... good for you?

How can it combat reviews when one can quite simply cancel their pre-order?

Are you new? If you buy it used they don't get the money the seller of said product will get the money.

He's going to buy the Sebastian DLC thus they still get dollars from him. Hence one of the reasons why they do this.

Even at Gamestop, used games are always $5 cheaper minimum. If you have their Rewards card, it's 10% cheaper, and you can print out coupons for $5 off used games. And there are online retailers that sell used copies for less than that.
And as I said, you cannot truly "cancel" a pre-order. You can not get a cash refund, just store credit.

You can cancel on Amazon
as they won't charge you until they ship the item

Might be true with some retailers, however, with other you don't even have to put down any deposit at all, Amazon comes to mind.

I get my money back just fine. I preordered at three spots by accident (Best Buy, Futureshop and Gamestop).
