There is no force mage!

At the risk of repeating myself:

Mark Darrah in an interview with Curse said the following:

Curse: What is the difference between an ability, and a specialization?

Mark Darrah: An ability is a specific thing, for example a Shield Bash would be an ability. A specialization is actually an entire tree. So, if you took Bloodmage, Bloodmage represents the entire tree of potential abilities. When you start the game you have access to six trees of abilities, and then later on you get a specialization point at 7, and one at 14, that lets you unlock higher level specialties. For a mage it's spirit healer, blood magic, and force mage.

If memory serves, Shortly after there was a thread that asked: What's a force mage?
David Gaider's respons was: When we force you to be a mage.
Chris Priestly then locked the thread a few pages later because people were focusing on David's joke.
Some folks assumed that Chris was referring to the Force Mage being a joke as opposed to David's reply being a joke.

As Mark originally provided this info in a serious interview, I believe that Force Mage is still one of the three specializations.

Hawke is level 4 and have 4 spells.

Then, no extra spell in first level?

That would be great.  Finally we get a game where being first level makes you ineffective again.

Sigh.. Like I said she may have upgraded her spells.. It doesnt show what rank the spell is unless you click on  one...

Hmm just a quick thought, does anyone else beleive those are the only abilities and specs for a mage? What i mean is in DA:O we were able to unlock two more through the wardens keep DLC and unlocking our tainted blood, so might we be able to stumble across hidden more additional spells/specs through quests/choices?

well, I'm wondering if mages will have a "non-spell" talent tree for passive talents like boosting their overall magic damage, or reducing cool-down time.......

All mages are powerful, if you know what you're doing.

Posted ImagePosted ImageThe devs have stated that this can't happen, at least if you upgrade anything.  Of course, there's always the console.

Oh yes, maybe on PC with console hahahaha but I like to have all spells to to test combinations. It's bad to create a character and then you do not like how it looks. At least you can try whatever you like and then play really seriously.

I'm guessing that Keeper is a unique tree to Merrill, similar to whatever that Swashbuckler tree is for Isabella (assuming that is unique to her). That would make sense in the grand scheme of things; why would a human apostate from Lothering have the powers of a Dalish keeper?

Dev's did confirm that every party member has 1 unique tree. (Izzy - Swashbuckling was the example, but Merril - Keeper sounds good).

or perhaps shes a dalish pariah? Dalish version of a blood mage. Given the forest background and the text above femHawke it would seem to indicate merrill was the one who conjured a demon using blood magic.

Or i could be wrong. Lol

looking at the blood mage web, its looks like blood wound and blood control will be back. Im hoping one of the new ones is a demon summon. Itd be awesome if u could summon a demon and a corpse from the spirit tree at the same time.

I'll need to see how the game works to be sure, but initially I don't see the appeal of this at all.

It looks from the icons that force mage has powers like an ME adept. If so, excellent. The controller abilities in DA:O definitely needed some love. Not because they were ineffective, but because they were all pretty much the same and boring.

However, if we are really talking physics-based powers, it will be interesting to see how it plays in a combat system that is far less "positional" than a shooter.

Upgrades are hidden at this view, when you zoom into the school the upgrades are revealed. I think there was a screenshot of Isabela's tree at that level from one of the podcasts.

Squares are the root of each school or specialization, Diamonds are actives, Hexagons are modals and circles are passives.

While you're answering questions... if a skill has multiple paths to reach it (say, for example, the end of most lines), do you need to acquire all the skills leading up to it or can you follow just the one path?

It might be interesting if they have some unique abilities.  Fenris for example is supposed to be infused with lyrium? It would be cool if he had a few more mageish abilities, rather than just be a generic 2 handed warrior.  In other words it would be nice if their personal trees varied up how you typically play their class.

As long as those unique trees don't limit their effectiveness at being used in ways that are typical of their class, that's fine.

But Isabela's swashbuckler tree, for example, might come at the expense of her archery tree, and that could make her far less versatile a Rogue than one than can use a bow.

I can argue that every tree comes at the expense of a weapon tree :<
