There is no force mage!
At the risk of repeating myself:
Mark Darrah in an interview with Curse said the following:
Curse: What is the difference between an ability, and a specialization?
Mark Darrah: An ability is a specific thing, for example a Shield Bash would be an ability. A specialization is actually an entire tree. So, if you took Bloodmage, Bloodmage represents the entire tree of potential abilities. When you start the game you have access to six trees of abilities, and then later on you get a specialization point at 7, and one at 14, that lets you unlock higher level specialties. For a mage it's spirit healer, blood magic, and force mage.
If memory serves, Shortly after there was a thread that asked: What's a force mage?
David Gaider's respons was: When we force you to be a mage.
Chris Priestly then locked the thread a few pages later because people were focusing on David's joke.
Some folks assumed that Chris was referring to the Force Mage being a joke as opposed to David's reply being a joke.
As Mark originally provided this info in a serious interview, I believe that Force Mage is still one of the three specializations.

That would be great. Finally we get a game where being first level makes you ineffective again.Thicos wrote...
in that screen who shows mage spells.
Hawke is level 4 and have 4 spells.
Then, no extra spell in first level?
Sigh.. Like I said she may have upgraded her spells.. It doesnt show what rank the spell is unless you click on one...

I totally didn't think of that.

All mages are powerful, if you know what you're doing.

The devs have stated that this can't happen, at least if you upgrade anything. Of course, there's always the console.

I'm guessing that Keeper is a unique tree to Merrill, similar to whatever that Swashbuckler tree is for Isabella (assuming that is unique to her). That would make sense in the grand scheme of things; why would a human apostate from Lothering have the powers of a Dalish keeper?Thicos wrote...
We need Keeper specialization ^^

Dev's did confirm that every party member has 1 unique tree. (Izzy - Swashbuckling was the example, but Merril - Keeper sounds good).

Or i could be wrong. Lol
looking at the blood mage web, its looks like blood wound and blood control will be back. Im hoping one of the new ones is a demon summon. Itd be awesome if u could summon a demon and a corpse from the spirit tree at the same time.

I'll need to see how the game works to be sure, but initially I don't see the appeal of this at all.ghostmessiah202 wrote...

However, if we are really talking physics-based powers, it will be interesting to see how it plays in a combat system that is far less "positional" than a shooter.

Squares are the root of each school or specialization, Diamonds are actives, Hexagons are modals and circles are passives.

It might be interesting if they have some unique abilities. Fenris for example is supposed to be infused with lyrium? It would be cool if he had a few more mageish abilities, rather than just be a generic 2 handed warrior. In other words it would be nice if their personal trees varied up how you typically play their class.

As long as those unique trees don't limit their effectiveness at being used in ways that are typical of their class, that's fine.relhart wrote...

But Isabela's swashbuckler tree, for example, might come at the expense of her archery tree, and that could make her far less versatile a Rogue than one than can use a bow.

I can argue that every tree comes at the expense of a weapon tree :<
