But on the other hand, no one is forcing people to put points into their unique trees either. It would be a waste not to, but I seriously doubt it would break the character.Sylvius the Mad wrote...

It might be interesting if they have some unique abilities. Fenris for example is supposed to be infused with lyrium? It would be cool if he had a few more mageish abilities, rather than just be a generic 2 handed warrior. In other words it would be nice if their personal trees varied up how you typically play their class.
But Isabela's swashbuckler tree, for example, might come at the expense of her archery tree, and that could make her far less versatile a Rogue than one than can use a bow.

But the presence of those trees prevents the character from having a different tree that is typical of their class (unless the companions have more trees than Hawke, or Hawke himself has a unique tree).Zahe wrote...

Really, since everyone else gets a unique tree, why doesn't Hawke? Or does he?

I don't think so, but if he gets that doesn't stop him of having all the weapons and specializations tree :<

If each companion has only unique specialization trees, by definition, Hawke's trees are unique, as he's the only one who has them.Sylvius the Mad wrote...

We still don't know if companions will be allowed two specialization or will have only their unique one.

Wait... what's a 'modal'? Which spell from Origins qualifies as a modal?

Hawke's set of trees will be unique within the party, but will he have a unique tree to which his companions don't have access?Xewaka wrote...

Since we don't know if companions will have access to more than one specialization, I can't answer that unambiguously.Sylvius the Mad wrote...

If companions do have access to specialization trees beyond their unique specialization, then no, Hawke has no unique trees.
If companions do not have access to specialization trees beyond their unique specialization, then yes, Hawke receives not one but tree unique trees his/her companions will have no access to.
We could go by the precedent stablished by DA:O and say no, but in DA:O, the companions specialization trees weren't unique, either.

Don't get me wrong, I really hate how limited and shoehorned companions are going to be in terms of builds for DA2. That's why I like the personal talent grids though, at least it's SOMETHING new and different, and might add some variety in how you play them.

Maybe we can choose only one spec for companions, rather than two, so they got 2 specs, one unique and one chose by us.

D'oooh! Of course! I dunno what I was thinking of.
*They were called sustainables in-game.
**Actualy, that makes more sense to me than modal, considering how they function.

Sorry, Isabela will never know how to use a bow. She is limited to dual wield builds only. Each companion has a set weapon style that you can never ever change. Sort of like their outfit. Customization in DA 2 is somewhat lacking.
Companions won't even have a weapon tree that is not their locked in weapon style.

Yeah, I've always refered to them as sustainables myself.
On a broader note: I tend to hate class systems in general. I much prefer systems like UO or Morrowind use. "classes" just take away from player creativity and input, I've never seen a good reason for them. A well crafted open leveling system will have jsut as many synergies mechanically speaking. So my distaste for it isn't just limited to DAO.

Isabela has a glass eye and a wooden thumb. She's a seriously hardcore pirate. Unfortunately her prosthetics mean she can't use a bow at all thus the limitation.Sylvius the Mad wrote...

Also,i wonder if upgrades will affect a spells animation. Looking at merrills screenshot surrounded by templars it looks like shes let off a radial arcane or ice spell. If its an ice spell, i wonder if its an upgrade of say 'cone of cold' where the upgrade makes it more akin to 'hand of winter' spell. So the upgrade changes it from a cone to a personal aoe burst.

hmmm seeing as the creation web has no stinging swarm i daresay stonefist (and its upgrade if it has one) is the only spell that will do nature damage? Im also betting that enemies who resist nature damage will still suffer knockback/force damage from getting knocked around by the stonefist spell.

There are 5 damage types.
Fire
Ice
Lightning
Earth
Spirit

The elemental damage types

be subject to change at any time). Fire is about straight damage
numbers. Cold is speed reduction. Electricity can stun. Earth is about
impact strength. Spirit is about unresistability.

The bottom left spell on the Primal Tree is Chain Lightning.
The bottom middle spell on the Primal Tree is Tempest.
The bottom spell of the spirit tree (white hand with purple aterisk) is Dispel Magic.
