Upgrades are hidden at this view, when you zoom into the school the upgrades are revealed. I think there was a screenshot of Isabela's tree at that level from one of the podcasts.
Squares are the root of each school or specialization, Diamonds are actives, Hexagons are modals and circles are passives.
Wait... what's a 'modal'? Which spell from Origins qualifies as a modal?
Root word being mode, thing slike Blood magic, Beserk (or whatever it was called), and miasma, would be "modals" I believe.
D'oooh! Of course! I dunno what I was thinking of.
*They were called sustainables in-game.
**Actualy, that makes more sense to me than modal, considering how they function.
Sorry, yes. Modal is the same as sustained.
There are abilities like
Blood Magic and
Dueling which are
sustainables, but they also need to be activated to use other spells/talents. I guess this is why it's exclusive for specializations; and it makes sense, you enter a dueling posture and then use an ability specific to a duelist. I suppose these are actually the
modals and the rest ,
Rally,
Threaten, whatnot are
just sustainables?
Anyway, what I really want to know is if DA2 features similar abilities. Personally I think it would be a step back to remove them, especially for an ability like
Berserk. Unless of course you cut the middle man, which on the other hand is not so bad (not bad at all, in fact), and now you have abilities like
Final Blow that work without a parent sustainable, instead encompassing it. For example, the description of
Final Blow would be something like 'Gather all the rage inside and release it in one powerful blow that uses up all your stamina...' or whatever.
On a side note, did you make
Reaving Storm from Awakening a Berserker talent? It would make sense, plus it would be interesting to see that ability with a sword and shield.
