I recently bought the BG 4 in 1 pack ... having played it back in '99, i was eager to play it on my current pc ... however, i ran into 2 problems after installing it ... the first was a graphics glitch which created black squares around some of the animations; i was able to fix this by upgrading my graphics card (g-force 250) ... the second problem, though, i have not been able to fix - i get music and ambient sounds, but no character, battle, or indoor sounds ... i tried to disable the environmental sound but it doesn't give me the option ... tried installing the game in its own folder instead of program files ... still nothin ... any suggestions would be welcome ... keep it simple as i'm not too pc savvy ... i know the basics but REALLY wanna play this game again ... thx guys

I had to do a full install for BG1 to work correctly for me. I think is is a bug with the veray old version of check disk Bg1 uses.

Yes, with the 4-in-1 box set you need the official patches. Problem is, they aren't on the official site no more, but Sorceror's Place has them. http://www.sorcerers.../index_misc.php

You will want the TOTSC patch, if you have TOTSC installed. For a full install, you should choose custom install and check all of the boxes. I'm not sure the patch will solve your sound issues, but it will prevent other problems from arising: the 'Global Variable bug' causing weird behaviour with multiple spawnings and unsolvable quests, you definitely should install it.

And yes, it might be your soundcard giving problems, or not. But at least you should update your soundcard driver, if you haven't done so yet. Maybe your soundcard has issues that are resolved in the newer version of it's driver. Can't hurt to try and it's the first thing to look into in.

ok, so call me a bonehead ... i decided to take a step back, take a deep breath, a double rum n coke, and take a good look at my audio manager ... and lo and behold, it was as simple as re-adjusting the sound parameters ... apparently it wasn't set to read all audio files ... click click fixed ... er

I did not know certain audio managers could be set up in such a way not all files could be rendered, but I'm glad you did find the solution. Enjoy the game, I hope you'll like it. If you get stuck, take a look at this or other fora, there are lots of topics about things 'newbie's' to the game run into, BG doen't take you by the hand as newer games do, but there's a lot of people around on the fora willing to help.
