So I just bought the "Value Games" edition of the game.
I installed it and everything went OK. When I try to start the game after the launcher nothing happens. Instead i get the "Mass Effect has stopped working, searching for an solution, no solution found"

Any help?

Edit:
I Downloaded the latest patch and installed it. Now I get as far as the picture after the game launcher and then the screen goes black and CTD's...

Thanks, Mwaki

Theres not much we can do to help you if we know nothing about your system. Read the "How to Report a Problem" thread, and then update with the required information.

Open DXdiag by pressing R + Windows logo on your keyboard and then typing dxdiag in the box, then press enter. Your video hardware is under the display tab.

Below DxDiag notes and DxDiag debug levels, you should have a similar excerpt:

---------------
Display Devices
---------------
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce 9600M GT
DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
Device Key: Enum\\\\PCI\\\\VEN_10DE&DEV_0649&SUBSYS_3603103C&REV_A1
Display Memory: 1759 MB
Dedicated Memory: 495 MB
Shared Memory: 1263 MB
Current Mode: 1280 x 800 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor Name: Generic PnP Monitor
Monitor Model: LP154WX4-TLCB
Monitor Id: LPL3101
Native Mode: 1280 x 800(p) (59.976Hz)
Output Type: Internal
Driver Name: nvd3dum.dll,nvwgf2um.dll,nvwgf2um.dll
Driver File Version: 8.17.0012.6099 (English)

The driver version is missing in your report.

What I must point out is that you have a generic Intel graphics accelerator, and the crash (or a GPF message) is EXPECTED as noted in the readme file, let me cite it once again:

Mass Effect does not run on a system using a GMA X3000 video card, a general
protection fault error appear after double clicking the start icon.

The only thing you can do is to update your card drivers and hope for the best. No guarantees, though.

From left to right select 'Chipsets', 'Laptop chipsets', 'Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family'. Then, select your operating system (Windows Vista). Then just find the graphics driver in the list.

Alternatively, direct link.

Your graphics driver version is 1502; current version is 2226.

you know...not to put you off or anything, but have you considered that a new graphics card that is capable of running Mass Effect is cheaper than buying a whole XBox 360? I managed to get Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 running off an (onboard) ATI 4250. It wasn't entirely pretty, but it worked.

Haha maybe it'd be cheapar if i had a stationary but on a laptop? I dont think so. When I've checked prices on external graphics cards for laptops it lands on a pretty hefty sum.

And anyway the Xbox purchase is long overdue and a better long term investment than an graphics card.

When the word "Mobile" is used to describe any type IGP, it is supposed to mean that the Chipset it's a part of is inside of a laptop, and only the more expensive Sager desktop replacement portable still offers that option (or at least, it did a couple of years ago).  All other laptops have all their electronics, other than RAM and storage drives, soldered permanently where attached, and then what might be thought of as the "inside" is glued / welded closed, so that attampting to access what previously was the inside will just destroy the chassis and mainboard.

There is no CPU or GPU upgrade for the current variety of mobile computer devices.
