So far, I've been playing on hard without any trouble to speak of.

But I have had to restart the battle against the undeadn 4-5 times, last one on normal mode. My party lasts until all the defenders in front of the chantry fall, then my party quickly gets wiped out as more and more undead just keep coming.

Playing a mage, with Morrigan, Allistair and dog. We must be about level 7. We got the dwarf and his thugs, the bartender and the elf archer to fight too.

Any tips for winning this battle would be appreciated, short of "try it in easy mode" (which is somehting I will try if nothing else works)..

The way that finally worked for me was training some of the horde back to the top... I played it on hard and the defenders got overwhelmed at the bottom very fast... you can train some up to the top and rinse and repeat if you need or just pick them off. It seems they don't beat down the chantry doors or anything.

Had Morrigan, placed down at the Chantry doin mind blast and cone of frost with the doggie and Alistar. Myself up at the bluff doin the same but trapped the mobs in the fire, think you get fire from the Barrels of oil you find in the store. Worked like a charm.

I had to reload many times about 15, I think I got there too early, and the only way I managed to survive was to try and keep as many defenders alive as posible. If you have no healer, it would be more difficult as happened to me.

Take it easy in the first part and let the knights handle most of the work (this is even better if you got the Dwarf to help too). In the second part, there are some zombies in the battle already that are elite-level. Kill them first. After that focus fire and use whatever CC/AoE spells you've got. If you are confident in your tank's ability to stay alive, use Taunt/Threaten. And try to kill zombies engaged with the militia-keeping them alive makes it easier to survive this battle.

Fire weapons and a little fireballs, I took Alister and Sten with me for this one.

I must admit I failed to pick up the dwarfs but I did get the church to give the knights the holy protection they wanted, and the blacksmith to repair weapons...

Without someone healing that battle is going to be very very hard. Go into tactical mode and help the guards when you see them under attack. They can pull attention away from you but they go down very very fast if you don't help them. If you have spells that can lock people down, use them. Mind blast on Morrigan helps a lot. Right at the start of the battle there are two yellow undead, tab to find them and make sure they die first. Good luck managing it on hard, I was able to do it with my mage healing and Wynne with me. You may want to consider going to an earlier save and doing the tower first to have her help.

In phase 1, I had everyone use ranged weapons and let the knights be the meat shield. Focus fire and take them down quick. The more knights that survive, the easier the 2nd part gets.

For the second, I put two tanks on the hill just up from the fence at the Chantry. My archer and mage were free to fire into the battle while the melee warriors held the pass. I kept an eye out for getting overwhelmed, though. If too many were trying to storm the hill, I'd select all and book it back up to the knights.

Still took two tries. Also be aware that the knights are still fighting zombies of their own; so don't count on all of them being there when you get there.

my problem is now that I've killed all the undead, I still cannot get into the castle. I know about the secret passage but nobody is showing up to give me access. Any ideas?

One thing I did that helped was to stagger the upper and lower fighting. That is, when we were called down to fight at the village we ran down, engaged the enemy, but then immediately ran back up, drawing the enemy with us. When we got to the top the knights help them kill us quickly, and then we ran back down again. Rinse and repeat. The only catch is the final enemy of the final wave down at the village has to be killed down near the village, or you end up with all the enemy killed, no more enemy coming, and the battle not finishing, i.e., you stay in combat forever (that happened to me).

Thanks for the tips so far. I will focus more next pass on healing the militia (I've been keeping a spare spell point, so I can pick healing for this purpose) and running up and down the hill between the knights and chantry.

Same here. I decided to continue on the one time I got Tomas to survive. Couldn't save anyone else though.

Got it on this try (on normal...). Casting heal on the militia did the trick. No need to run up and down the hill. Thanks again for the tips.

Remember that you can also cast healing spells on NPC's. This can really help in that battle, which for some reason is really overwhelming otherwise.

EDIT: Ah, E.C Patterson beat me to it haha. Well done.

The Spirit Healer's AOE Heal affects Friendly NPCs as well.
