If I can't figure something out, I just use the internet.

And 'the internet' gets it from the strategy guide.

Hah, no.

Hah, yes.

How do I know this? Because 90% of what's in the DA:O strategy guide is in the wiki and that information gets c+p'ed into things like IGN.com's walkthrough.

Malanek999 wrote...

No. That is really unfair on the players who put a huge amount of effort into it.

It's unfair to say that people who write walkthroughs used the official strategy guide? Whatever.

Oh, I see. So you equate "the internet" with DA Wiki and IGN? That explains it.

I was thinking of gaming forums full of nerds who go to great pains to empirically test every single spell, ability, mechanic, and formula in the game and use the data they've collected for making recommendations on which skills to take, how to use them to best effect, etc.

They tend to be far more complete and accurate than the junk written in official strategy guides and sites like IGN, which is in turn usually just lifted from the spell descriptions and whatnot present in the game itself.

I don't know. I kind of want it, but I don't. I have a very... mixed relationship with game guides

If you want to move faster than you ever thought possible (and you're also a mage), bring Morrigan and Wynne along and make sure Haste is active for your Warden as well as the other two gals. OMG, I've never laughed so friggin' hard! Posted Image My next run to complete before DA2 comes out will be as a mage and I'm going to bring Wynne, Morrigan, and Zevran along for most of it. This'll give a whole new meaning to the term "speedrun," aye? Posted Image

OT but I almost always run with 2 mages just for this very reason. Also when I have double hasten I make little "vroom vroom" noises as I pilot my PC around.  If you really want to see fast check out double hasten on Dog while in combat!

And for the people saying that you can look up all the walkthroughs and info you need on the internet, sure, but there's something to be said for holding a hardbound book in your hands and looking at the pretty pictures.

Well how often does that happen? It's not like "puzzles" in games are challenging. Even the bridge puzzle in DAO took about 30 seconds if you a) paid attention and can remember details from the previous few minutes, or B) are willing to break out a notepad and pencil.

I will take that as an attack on me because I said I struggled with that puzzle. For you to put the word puzzle in quotation means you are a)Arrogant and b)view yourself as someone of greater mind and intellect. We get it, you play DAO on Nightmare and laugh at those who don't. You find no challenge in modern RPG's. We get it. You're a gaming god. But maybe there is a deeper reasoning behind your "You are nubs" mentatlity? Are you compensating for something?

It wasn't a personal attack on you. If I were responding to you, I would have quoted you or referred to you by name. Please don't try to create drama where there is none.

The best strategy guides will, as always, be written by players. They're not afraid to say "This is useless, don't put any points into it."

Hello, mage Shapeshifter spec.

Different strokes I suppose. Shapeshifter is my favourite specialization from DAO. Used it for all of my solo Nightmare runs.

I just pre-ordered mine from Amazon -- much cheaper.

If it was a Brady or Prima guide, I would've skipped it but it's a Piggyback guide so I will not doubt the quality.

I've bought two Prima guides, one for ME2 and one for SF4. I wasn't impressed. Well, they plain sucked. A waste of money. I have a weird affinity for manuals and guides that come with games, like they did back in the day, but not this stuff.

back in my day we wrote faqs because we were better than the paid professionals because they play more games than the ones that write faqs, and because of that the ones who write faqs specialize in specific games

gamefaqs.com by the players for the players, may interplay rest in pieces

I never got a guide before but my wife got me the CE Guide for Fallout New Vegas for Christmas. I have to admit, it's a cool book to look through to see how a quest could have gone, or just to see what I missed.

Not sure I will start buying them now or anything, but they are cooler than expected.

I want to try to stay away from the more vehement arguments in here; however, I will say that as amazing as the guide is physically, I've never been one to purchase guides if only for the fact that the spoiler factor is exceptionally High. Yes, I understand that Guides are only to be utilized when one is stuck or is getting the poop kicked out of them by some Elite Hurlock Omega or some-such, but the chance of flipping to the wrong page and getting something like, "Choice to Kill Merril..." is just too prominent, even if it's by accident.

So...no. I won't be picking it up. One thing about BioWare RPGs that set them apart from many others is that 9 times out of 10 you *want* to be taken by surprise by a character or plot element. It's almost always worth the, "Nooooo!" moment. Yeah, no Guides for me. However, nothing wrong with those who want to buy it either for use or simply for the estetic appeal.

I enjoyed my Pokemon and Super Mario RPG guides before they fell apart. Nowadays I can't justify to myself spending $20 on a strategy guide, however.

Well those came free with a subscription of Nintendo POwer

the Pokemon SG was fantastic, could plan your team and their attacks ahead rather than jumping blindly into the pit of evolution

That I'm getting it for the same reason I got the DA:O guide: for the wiki.

Hopefully people are preordering from Amazon or other sources... it's a lot cheaper. :)

The OP should put the Amazon link up in that first post.

I pre-ordered the collectors guide from play.com. I have the last guides of DAO and DAOA but there not the limited collectors edition which I regret now as the limited collectors guide gave some intresting insight into Dragon age Lore.
