What is roleplay but helping to shape a world and a story? You're always going to be playing in someone else's sandbox, but with this system it's less our own. I realize that's not important to some people or they don't mind the trade-off, but just disparaging and dismissing it when you're on a board that's dedicated to roleplaying games is a wee ironic.
I have never used this phrase before, because apparently I was saving it for you; lolwut?
While I certainly agree with your first statement, roleplaying is about helping to shape a world and a story, I fail to see how the ability to change your party's armor limits your opportunity to do either. How is Bethany wearing Mage Amor #1 vs Mage Armor #3 going to effect either of those elements? So you can give her a slightly goofier or vaguely different set of armor for that meager stat bonus?
Instead, the developers have crafted the armor to reflect the personalities of the characters they are for, and designed them to evolve throughout the story as the characters themselves evolve. In this way the armor becomes an extension of the character, rather than just another piece of gear you have to micromanage for the best bonus.
This also allows the designers to create some very impressive custom armor for each character instead of sprinkling the world with the bland variations of the same armor with slight color palate swaps like they did in DA:O.
Rather than look for reasons to hate this decision, perhaps people should be looking at the reasons why this might make the game better. We cannot always assume the developers made a decision simply to ****** you off, sometimes they make choices because they honestly think people will be happier with the end result. But I could be wrong there ... I'd need an actual developer to confirm or deny that before it becomes a nasty rumor.
